The Washington Times expects Ross Detwiler (back) to start Wednesday against the Brewers.

Detwiler was pulled from his last outing due to lower back stiffness, but reported improvement Sunday and there now appears to be little question that he'll make his next start. The Nationals have yet to make anything official. If Detwiler is held out, Ross Ohlendorf would make a spot start in his place.

MLB suspended Dee Gordon for 80 games without pay for testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

Stunning late night news. Gordon tested positive for exogenous testosterone and clostebol. The suspension is effective immediately. Gordon has turned his career around over the past two seasons and won the NL batting crown during his first season with the Marlins last year. The 28-year-old recently signed a five-year, $50 million extension with Miami, but the club will now be without him until after the All-Star break.

Jose Fernandez pitched a respectable game in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers, striking out eight and allowing two runs over six innings.

Along with the eight strikeouts, Fernandez walked three while scattering five hits. The two runs on his line both came home to roost in the first inning courtesy of an RBI double by Yasmani Grandal and an RBI infield single by Yasiel Puig. Fernandez settled in after that frame. The flamethrower has produced a mixed-bag season through five starts, pitching to a 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 40/14 K/BB ratio over 28 2/3 innings. He will play host to the Diamondbacks in his next start.
Apr 29 - 1:05 AM

Rubby De La Rosa was clutch in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Cardinals, striking out 10 over seven shutout innings.

De La Rosa allowed just two hits on the evening. He walked two and exited having thrown a tidy 94 pitches (65 strikes). It was a sparkling outing any way you cut it. Through four starts (seven appearances), the 27-year-old right-hander holds a 4.18 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28/8 K/BB ratio. A road date with the Marlins shows next on his schedule as he tries to build on Thursday's fantastic start.

Mallex Smith played catalyst from the bottom of the Braves' order Thursday, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox.

Smith actually could have had a bigger night, but his line drive to right field with two on in the second inning bounced over the short Fenway wall, rendering it a ground-rule double and keeping Smith confined to two bases and just one RBI. He also swatted an RBI single in the sixth. It was easily Smith's best game as a member of the Braves, as the speedster is hitting just .188/.278/.292 through 16 games, even with Thursday's outburst.
Apr 28 - 11:18 PM

Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, five RBI and three runs scored as the Orioles trounced the White Sox 10-2 on Thursday.

Machado jumped on a slider from reliever Jake Petricka in the sixth inning to turn a relatively close game into a blowout. The homer was his seventh of the season, tying him for second-most in the American League (including with his teammate Chris Davis). The 23-year-old has 16 RBI and 19 runs scored to go with a .333/.389/.678 line through 21 games.
Apr 28 - 10:55 PM

Aaron Nola allowed just two singles over seven scoreless innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Nationals.

Nola had great movement on his pitches and was incredibly efficient, walking one batter and striking out seven while throwing 54 out of 77 pitches for strikes. He didn’t get the win, but the Phillies eventually got the upper hand in the ninth inning to finish off the three-game sweep. The Phillies held the Nationals scoreless over the final 22 innings of the series. With a 3.55 ERA and 37/6 K/BB ratio over 33 innings, Nola continues to impress.
Apr 28 - 9:26 PM

Jake Arrieta was no Johnny Vander Meer on Thursday, but he was victorious after holding the Brewers to one run over five innings.

Arrieta needed 92 pitches to get through five innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out six. He gave up an RBI double to Alex Presley in the fifth inning to end his home scoreless streak at 52 2/3 innings. That’s the second-longest such streak in MLB history. Arrieta is now 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 32/10 K/BB ratio in 36 innings. He’ll get the division rival Pirates next week.
Apr 28 - 8:53 PM

Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings Thursday in his first minor league rehab start with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rodriguez, who is working his way back from a right patella subluxation, struck out two batters and threw 45 out of 75 pitches for strikes. Coming off the shaky outing, the southpaw still figures to make one or two more starts in the minors before joining the Red Sox. Henry Owens will continue to hold down a rotation spot for now.
Apr 28 - 8:24 PM

Kris Bryant will undergo a precautionary MRI on his right ankle.

Bryant suffered a mild sprain of his right ankle while running the bases in the third inning on Thursday. The Cubs appear confident that it's nothing serious, but there should be more clarity on his status soon.
Apr 28 - 6:24 PM

Angels placed RHP Huston Street on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24, with a left oblique strain.

Street felt some discomfort while making warmup throws on Wednesday and will require an extended absence. The Angels will make a corresponding roster move on Friday. Joe Smith is expected to fill in at closer and should be picked up in all fantasy leagues.
Apr 28 - 5:44 PM

White Sox placed RHP David Robertson on the bereavement list.

Robertson will be away from the club for 3-7 days following a death in the family. Nate Jones has been excellent in a setup role this season for the White Sox and should slide seamlessly into a fill-in closer role.
