David Price pitched seven shutout innings, striking out 10 as the Rays topped the Astros 8-0 on Tuesday.

Leave it to the Astros to make a pitcher feel at home. Price pitched so well that the Rays didn't even let him get to his 90-pitch limit, deciding they'd seen enough of their ace for one night. Price needed just 70 pitches to get through seven innings, fanning 10 while allowing just three singles. The lefty struggled before hitting the disabled list, but he returned strong in his rehab starts and showed no signs of slowing down Tuesday. His next start will come Sunday against the White Sox.

Ervin Santana posted his second double-digit strikeout game of the season, allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings en route to a win against the Marlins on Wednesday.

Santana struck out 10, including the one out he recorded in the eighth. His last double-digit strikeout game occurred in his second start on April 14. The Marlins had runners on base but couldn't convert, as Santana allowed six hits (all singles) and three walks. The right-hander improves his ERA to 3.87 and has a 1.27 WHIP and 107/37 K/BB ratio to go along with it. Santana will wrap up a homestand on Monday against the Padres next.

Francisco Liriano pitched well against the Dodgers on Wednesday, holding them to one run over seven innings en route to his second win of the season.

Liriano didn't have the strikeout stuff working the way he did in his last start against the Rockies, but he limited the Dodgers to four hits and a pair of walks while fanning four. The lefty finished the seventh inning for the first time since April 21. Now with a 4.18 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 93/47 K/BB ratio, Liriano will look to keep it going against the Giants on the road next week.

Jorge De La Rosa struck out 11 batters while allowing two runs -- one earned -- over 7 1/3 innings in the Rockies' 6-4 win over the Nationals on Wednesday.

De La Rosa allowed eight hits without walking a batter, and the left-hander hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his four starts this month. The strong outing raised his record to 11-6 with a 4.19 ERA through 21 starts. He'll try to continue his strong stretch of starts when he faces the Cubs at Wrigley next week.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Wednesday that first base will be a "day-to-day thing" going forward.

It's a nice way of saying Ryan Howard has lost his grip on the starting first base job. Howard and Darin Ruf will platoon based on matchups and who is swinging the hotter bat, and it appears Sandberg is resolute in his willingness to see what Ruf can do over the next two months. CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports the Phillies have considered the possibility of releasing Howard if he can't be moved in a trade. The Phillies owe Howard, who is hitting .224/.305/.377, $60 million guaranteed over the next three years.

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as the Tigers pounded the Diamondbacks 11-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Arizona's Chase Field.

Cabrera singled and scored in the top of the fourth inning and then slugged a three-run shot to give the Tigers some insurance in the top of the eighth. The Detroit slugger has gone 2-for-4 in three straight games and is now batting .315/.372/.539 with 15 home runs and 80 RBI in 97 total games this season.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said the MRI results for Ryan Zimmerman showed a "pretty substantial" hamstring strain.

Well, that's not good. Zimmerman was placed on the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game, and it doesn't appear he's anywhere close to returning to the club at this point. Anthony Rendon will get the majority of the starts at third base with Zimmerman sidelined.

Bartolo Colon carried a perfect game into the seventh inning Wednesday in the Mets' 3-2 win over the Mariners.

Robinson Cano ended the bid for perfection with a two-out single to shallow left field in the bottom of the seventh. Colon then gave up two runs in the eighth but wound up with his ninth victory of 2014. The 41-year-old right-hander has a 4.03 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 100/19 K/BB ratio in 134 innings this season. The Mets are known to be shopping him with the July 31 trade deadline drawing near.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday "it's too early to call" whether the rest program prescribed for Masahiro Tanaka's right elbow will work.

The other option is obviously surgery, so the Yankees are going to give the program all the time they can before making a decision. Cashman did add that Tanaka is feeling better since he was shut down on July 10 due to a partial tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. He's still weeks away from any potential return to the mound.

Manny Machado (back) is not in the Orioles' lineup on Wednesday.

Machado received an anti-inflammatory injection for his back after Tuesday's game, so it's no surprise that he's getting the day off Wednesday. He's still considered day-to-day for now, but if misses too many more games it might make sense for the Orioles to shut him down for a few weeks. Ryan Flaherty started at third base in his absence.

According to CSNBayArea.com beat reporter Andrew Baggarly, the Giants are "growing more concerned" about Brandon Belt's concussion.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Tuesday that Belt was "making progress" and might soon be able to resume some baseball activities, but the first baseman was sent back to the team hotel on Wednesday evening in Philadelphia after exhibiting lingering concussion-related symptoms. There is no timetable for his return at this point.

James Shields held the White Sox to one run in seven innings Wednesday in a 2-1 Royals victory.

Shields was left with a no-decision because the Kansas City offense didn't break through for the lead until the top of the ninth inning. But the right-hander pitched really well, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out seven White Sox batters. He'll carry a 3.58 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into his next start at home against the Twins.
