Brandon Beachy (elbow) will throw at least one more side session before being cleared to resume a minor league rehab assignment.

Beachy threw an extended bullpen session Wednesday and figures to throw another one on the team's trip to Philadelphia. He's going to need multiple starts in the minors, but should make an impact with the Braves at some point during the second half.

Ubaldo Jimenez is on the Orioles' roster for their ALDS matchup against the Tigers.

Jimenez had an ugly 4.81 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 125 1/3 total innings this season, but he pitched pretty well in September and the O's feel he can be a useful option in long relief. Brad Brach also made the roster. Brian Matusz and T.J. McFarland did not.

Jake Peavy will start for the Giants in Game 1 of their NLDS matchup against the Nationals.

Madison Bumgarner started Wednesday's Wild Card Game, hurling a nine-inning shutout at the Pirates, so he won't be available until NLDS Game 3. Peavy posted an outstanding 2.17 ERA in 78 2/3 innings for the Giants after the July 26 trade that got him out of Boston. He'll need to be at his best against Nats ace Stephen Strasburg.
Oct 2 - 9:27 AM

Madison Bumgarner struck out 10 in a complete-game, 8-0 shutout of the Pirates in the National League Wild Card Game Wednesday.

Bumgarner didn't need to be dominant, but he was anyway. The left-hander gave up just four hits, all singles, and walked one, using 109 pitches to get through the game. October baseball is becoming old hat for Bumgarner at this point, as the 25-year-old already has seven postseason starts in his career. Bumgarner is on track to make the start for the Giants in NLDS Game 3 against the Nationals.
Oct 1 - 11:26 PM

Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of the Giants' win over the Pirates in Wednesday's Wild Card Game.

Of all the unlikely heroes in a one-game playoff, Crawford may have been among the unlikeliest. But there he was, pulling an Edinson Volquez curveball into the right field stands for a grand slam that gave the Giants the lead and ultimately the victory. Crawford finished 1-for-5 in the game, but he can go hitless until 2015 and still have earned his spot in the lineup this postseason.
Oct 1 - 11:23 PM

Chris Owings will have surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery. The Diamondbacks are expecting Owings to be ready for spring training. Owings hit .261/.300/.406 while playing just 91 games due to injury in his rookie year.
Oct 1 - 7:05 PM

Hyun-Jin Ryu threw a 45-pitch simulated game Wednesday in Los Angeles, experiencing "no problems before, during or after with his shoulder."

With no issues reported, Ryu should be on schedule to make a start against the Cardinals in the NLDS. Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke are slated for the first two games, so the earliest the Dodgers would need Ryu is Game 3 on Monday. Ryu hasn't started since September 13 due to left shoulder inflammation.
Oct 1 - 7:02 PM

Josh Hamilton (shoulder, chest, rib cage) will start in left field and bat seventh in Thursday's Game 1 of the ALDS.

Hamilton missed the last few weeks of the season, not playing a game after September 4, due to the ailments, but he recently declared himself good to go for the ALDS. Hamilton and the Angels will square off with Jason Vargas and the Royals Thursday night.
Oct 1 - 6:24 PM

Matt Shoemaker will start Friday's Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Royals.

There was some question as to whether Shoemaker's oblique would cooperate, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia made the announcement that Shoemaker would get the ball Friday. He'll be opposed by Yordano Ventura for the Royals. The Angels are rolling with a three-man rotation during the series, so Shoemaker may also be an option for a potential Game 5, should the series that last long.
Oct 1 - 6:18 PM

Yordano Ventura will start for the Royals in Game 2 of their ALDS matchup against the Angels.

Ventura gave up a big three-run homer to Brandon Moss in Tuesday night's American League Wild Card Game, but that hasn't swayed the Royals' confidence in the flamethrowing 23-year-old right-hander. Ventura finished the 2014 regular season with a superb 3.20 ERA and 159 strikeouts in 183 innings. Jason Vargas is starting Game 1.
Oct 1 - 5:24 PM

Travis d'Arnaud underwent surgery Wednesday to remove bone spurs from his right elbow.

The procedure went according to plan and should have little effect on d'Arnaud's offseason regimen. The 25-year-old catcher batted .265/.313/.474 with seven home runs and 22 RBI in 53 games after the All-Star break and has the look of a potential breakout candidate for the 2015 fantasy season.
Oct 1 - 4:45 PM

Kevin Gausman will pitch out of the bullpen during the Orioles' ALDS matchup with the Tigers.

It's not really a surprise. Gausman posted a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 88/38 K/BB ratio across 113 1/3 innings this season and is a big part of the Orioles' future, but the 23-year-old right-hander will take a backseat to the more-experienced foursome of Chris Tillman, Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yin Chen, and Bud Norris.
