Dan Straily permitted just one single and three walks over seven innings in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Cubs.

Other than the three free passes, an Alfonso Soriano single in the fourth inning was all the Cubs could muster off of Straily. Yoenis Cespedes gunned out Starlin Castro at the plate on Soriano's single. The young right-hander, who was starting because Jarrod Parker was pushed back, struck out six on the day. Straily has a 4.52 ERA for the season but boasts a 1.15 WHIP. He'll take on the Pirates on the road next week.

Brewers declined 2B Rickie Weeks' $14.5 million option for 2015.

It's no surprise, of course, after Weeks lost his second base job to Scooter Gennett this season. He hit well in a part-time role, batting .274/.357/.452 with eight homers over 286 plate appearances. He's injury-prone and the big upside isn't there anymore, but Weeks is probably intriguing enough to land a starting job somewhere this winter.

Sports Hochi reports that the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks plan to offer Daisuke Matsuzaka a four-year contract worth about $3.58 million per season.

He'd be crazy to turn that kind of money down, as Matsuzaka would have to take a minor league deal from a major league club. The right-hander has said previously that he'd be open to returning to Japan if they give him a chance to start. It would be shocking if Matsuzaka turns the offer down.

Padres decline RHP Josh Johnson's $4 million option for 2015.

Johnson, of course, missed the 2014 campaign following Tommy John surgery and could get a late start to next season. However, he and the Padres are both interested in working out a smaller, likely incentive-laden deal. The right-hander has ample upside when healthy, which isn't terribly often.
Oct 30 - 7:57 PM

Orioles declined OF Nick Markakis' $17.5 million option for 2015.

It was an expected move. The Orioles are working to re-sign Markakis to a long-term deal, though Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported earlier this month that there has been "no substantial progress" made in extension talks. Markakis hit .276/.342/.386 with 14 homers and 50 RBI for the O's this season.
Oct 30 - 6:14 PM

Orioles exercised LHP Wei-Yin Chen's $4.75 million option for 2015.

It's a no-brainer. Chen has put up a 3.86 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 86 starts over the last three seasons for the Orioles, proving to be a bargain after coming over from Japan. He'll be a big part of the Baltimore rotation again next season.
Oct 30 - 6:09 PM

Dan Haren has exercised his $10 million player option for 2015.

The option already vested after Haren crossed the 180-inning threshold in late-September, but he still had to make a decision about whether to exercise it or test free agency. The veteran right-hander ultimately decided to stick around for another year. Haren had arthroscopic surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder earlier this month, but he should be fully-healed by spring training.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs could announce Joe Maddon as their new manager by Friday.

Multiple reports indicated Wednesday that the two sides reached an agreement, but Maddon's agent downplayed the situation. Still, Rosenthal hears that all systems remain a "go" for a deal. It's likely a matter of timing, as the Cubs didn't want to upstage the World Series or increase the risk of a tampering accusation from the Rays, given that Maddon just opted out of his contract last Friday.
Oct 30 - 5:36 PM

Red Sox re-signed RHP Koji Uehara to a two-year, $18 million contract.

The Red Sox weren't expected to make Uehara a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer, but they didn't want him to hit the open market either. It's a fair compromise under the circumstances. Uehara faded down the stretch this season, but still ended up with 26 saves to go along with a 2.52 ERA and 80/8 K/BB ratio over 64 1/3 innings. He'll turn 40 next April and will enter the season as the Red Sox' closer.
Oct 30 - 5:02 PM

Brewers exercised RHP Yovani Gallardo's $13 million club option for 2015.

An expected move. While his strikeout rate continues to decline, Gallardo posted a career-low 3.51 ERA across 32 starts this season. He has made at least 30 starts in six straight seasons.
Oct 30 - 4:44 PM

Mariners exercised RHP Hisashi Iwakuma's $7 million club option for 2015.

Previous reports indicated the option vested based on performance bonuses, but it's an easy call either way. Iwakuma posted a quality 3.52 ERA and 154/21 K/BB ratio over 179 innings this past season. He remains part of a potent one-two punch in Seattle with King Felix.
Oct 30 - 4:10 PM

Angels exercised RHP Huston Street's $7 million club option for 2015.

An expected move. Street notched 41 saves to go along with a 1.37 ERA and 57/14 K/BB ratio over 59 1/3 innings this season between the Padres and Angels. He's a bargain for 2015.
