Alex Rodriguez (hip) will not play with High-A Tampa on Friday due to a rainout.

A-Rod went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in two rehab games with Low-A Charleston this week and was scheduled to move up to High-A on Friday. However, his debut in Tampa will be pushed back one day. The veteran third baseman is aiming to rejoin the Yankees shortly after the All-Star break.

Cardinals activated C Yadier Molina from the 15-day disabled list.

Molina went 5-for-6 with three doubles in his two rehab games to show the Cards he was ready. He's catching and batting sixth Friday versus the Cubs in his return to action. Tony Cruz was sent down, so A.J. Pierzynski will serve as the backup.

Anthony Rizzo (back) remained out of the Cubs' lineup Friday.

The Cubs said that they pulled Rizzo from Tuesday's game as a precaution due to lower back tightness, but he's now sitting out a third straight game, so he obviously hasn't progressed as hoped. Chris Valaika is covering first base Friday.
Aug 29 - 4:50 PM

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) has been shut down from throwing due to "general soreness" in his pitching arm.

Tanaka said the pain he's experiencing is more in his forearm than elbow. The Yankees are saying that no doctor appointment is scheduled, so it appears to be a relatively minor setback. Still, the odds of Tanaka returning to contribute this year already weren't great and now he has less of a chance. The righty had been scheduled for a simulated game on Tuesday, but his timetable is now up in the air. Fantasy owners certainly shouldn't be counting on him.
Aug 29 - 4:23 PM

Pedro Alvarez (foot) remained out of the Pirates' lineup Friday.

He's now missed two straight games after suffering a sprain between two toes on his left foot during Tuesday's contest. It's not clear at this point how much longer Alvarez might be sidelined. Ike Davis is handling first base on Friday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jorge De La Rosa has been claimed and blocked on revocable waivers.

It's not clear who made the waiver claim or when it happened, but Heyman says "it was long enough ago that he is now considered blocked." De La Rosa would have been a solid get for a contender, as he holds a solid 4.19 ERA this season despite pitching half his games at Coors Field and boasts a 3.23 mark since the beginning of July. The left-hander will be a free agent this winter and Heyman says the Rockies will make him a qualifying offer if they're not able to lock him up on a long-term deal.
Aug 29 - 12:14 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that both the Orioles and Nelson Cruz "have expressed an interest" in a contract extension.

Heyman cautions that "there's no definitive immediate word of any early negotiations," but it does appear the two sides are interested "in continuing the marriage, if possible." The report also adds that the O's will extend Cruz a qualifying offer this offseason if they're unable to lock him up on a long-term deal. After having to settle for a one-year, $8 million deal in late February, Cruz has gone on to hit a career-high 34 homers so far for Baltimore, a total that leads all of baseball.

Howie Kendrick hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give the Angels a 4-3 win over the A's.

The Angels had squandered a bases loaded situation in the 9th inning. They made up for it the next inning on a Howie Kendrick sacrifice fly that scored Albert Pujols. Kendrick would finish the game 2-for-3 with the one RBI. He's slashing .281/.337/.370 this season.
Aug 29 - 2:10 AM

Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning of the A's 4-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday.

Donaldson hit the bomb off of Angels starter C.J. Wilson. He also doubled in the contest, finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI and two walks. He has 88 RBI to go with the 26 long balls. While Donaldson's average is down from his breakout 2013 campaign (.256 this year vs .301 in 2013), he's been an integral part of the A's offense this season, having already set a career high in home runs. He's also on-pace to set a career high for RBI. On the year, he's slashing .256/.346/.471.
Aug 29 - 2:03 AM

Jordan Schafer went 3-for-5 with four runs batted in and a stolen base in Thursday's 10-inning victory against the Royals.

Schafer singled in a run in the fourth inning, doubled in a run in the sixth, and knocked in two insurance runs with a 10th-inning single. He has performed well since joining the Twins on a waiver claim, batting .328 (21-for-64) with 10 stolen bases since August 5. Schafer is on an eight-game hitting streak as well.
Aug 29 - 12:00 AM

Carlos Carrasco continued to pitch well on Thursday, earning the win after limiting the White Sox to one run over 6 2/3 innings.

Carrasco has pitched like a completely new player since rejoining the rotation on August 10. Over his last four starts, including Thursday's effort, he has a 0.73 ERA with a 24/3 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings. Against the White Sox, he surrendered only four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Carrasco will look to continue his hot streak on Tuesday at home against the Tigers. He's worth grabbing in mixed leagues as long as he keeps pitching like this.
Aug 28 - 11:32 PM

Jason Castro's fifth inning grand slam was the deciding factor in Thursday's victory over the Rangers.

Castro finished 2-for-3 with a walk and the salami. His fifth inning 420-foot shot to right field off of Roman Mendez would prove to be the only offense the Astros would muster on the evening but it was enough behind a strong start from Collin McHugh. Castro had been held hitless in each of his previous six games spanning 22 plate appearances. On the season, he has 13 home runs, 50 RBI, and a .227/.297/.377 slash line.
