Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 4-for-4 with a career-high five RBI in Friday's 12-5 win over the Brewers.

It was a monster night for Nieuwenhuis, who also drew two walks, scored three runs, and stole a base. His batting average has jumped from .128 to .233 in the span of four games. The 25-year-old strikes out too much to be much of a fantasy option, but he could see increased playing time against right-handers as the season continues.

Astros placed OF George Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist.

Edinson Volquez drilled Springer with a 96 mph fastball on Wednesday night and now he'll miss six weeks. Alex Presley was called up from Triple-A Fresno to take his place in right field. Springer has been a different player since moving into the leadoff spot, batting .325 with 12 RBI since June 1. The 25-year-old had been on pace for 26 homers and 28 stolen bases before his injury. It's a big loss for fantasy owners.
Jul 2 - 1:56 PM

Twins recalled INF Miguel Sano from Double-A Chattanooga.

Sano will take over as the Twins' regular designated hitter in Thursday's series opener against the Royals. The 22-year-old was sporting a .918 OPS with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 66 games this season at the Double-A level and he's a must-own in all standard fantasy leagues for his massive power potential.

Buster Posey (head) is starting at first base for the Giants on Thursday afternoon against the Marlins.

Posey left Wednesday's game after taking a foul ball off the center of his mask, but he passed a concussion test. He is batting cleanup Thursday against Jose Fernandez, who's making his first start in over 13 months.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he will back off Santiago Casilla for a few days due to fatigue.

Casilla blew his fourth save of the season on Wednesday night, yielding three runs without retiring batter. His job still seems safe, but look for Bochy to play the matchups with Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo over the next few games should a save opportunity arise. Casilla, 34, has a 3.03 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 29 2/3 total innings this season. He's been fine for the most part.
Jul 2 - 11:01 AM

Kris Bryant is out of the Cubs' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Mets.

Bryant struck out in three of his five trips to the plate on Wednesday and will now take a day of mental and physical rest. Jonathan Herrera is starting at third base and batting seventh versus Mets righty Jacob deGrom.
Jul 2 - 10:34 AM

Michael Bourn will serve his one-game suspension Thursday.

Bourn was handed the one-game sentence last week for bumping home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi during an argument. Michael Brantley is starting in center field and Mike Aviles is in left field Thursday versus the Rays.
Jul 2 - 10:00 AM

Marlins activated RHP Jose Fernandez from the 60-day disabled list.

Fernandez is ready to rock again, 13 months after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The 22-year-old right-hander showed promising signs on his five-start minor league rehab assignment and needs to be owned in all mixed fantasy leagues for what should be an exciting and productive second half of the 2015 season. Fernandez owns a remarkable 2.25 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 257 strikeouts in 224 1/3 career major league innings. He's starting Thursday at home against the Giants.

Dodgers signed RHP Yadier Alvarez.

It's a contract worth $16 million. Los Angeles has been considered the frontrunner for Alvarez for months and there was probably already a handshake agreement in place, but the deal couldn't be announced until the official beginning of the July 2 signing period. Alvarez is a hard-throwing 19-year-old right-hander out of Cuba. He was one of the top talents in this international amateur class.

Yordano Ventura (hand) allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday at Triple-A Omaha.

Ventura walked three but struck out four and gave up only three hits. It may be enough to convince the Royals that the 24-year-old right-hander is ready to return from the disabled list. He's been on the shelf since June 13 with ulnar neuritis.
Jul 2 - 9:05 AM

Giants activated RHP Matt Cain from the 15-day disabled list.

Cain will make his 2015 regular-season debut Thursday in the Giants' series finale against the Marlins after missing three months with a flexor tendon strain in his right arm. The veteran right-hander pitched pretty well on his minor league rehab tour and is worth owning in most mixed fantasy leagues. Tim Lincecum (forearm) was placed on the disabled list Thursday in a corresponding roster move.
Jul 2 - 8:45 AM

Giants placed RHP Tim Lincecum on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm contusion.

Lincecum suffered a bad bruise Saturday in his start against the Rockies. He may be moved to the bullpen once he's back to 100 percent health. Matt Cain (elbow) is taking over the vacant rotation spot.
