Nationals acquired OF Scott Hairston and a PTBNL from the Cubs for RHP Ivan Pineyro and a PTBNL.

Hairston gives the Nats a high-quality fourth outfielder and bench bat. The 33-year-old was batting just .172 with a .232 on-base percentage in 52 games this season for Chicago, but he slugged 20 homers alongside a decent .803 OPS in 2012 with the Mets. Hairston is making $2.5 million this summer and owed $2.5 million in 2014.

Brett Lawrie (finger) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Dunedin on Friday.

Lawrie is expected to be there for at least a week and will play both third and second base before the club makes a decision on where to put him once activated. He's been out since late June with a fractured right index finger.
Aug 1 - 5:57 PM

Matt Cain (elbow) is expected to undergo season-ending surgery.

Reports had indicated earlier that he would hold off for now in a long shot hope to pitch later this season, but it sounds like he'll go under the knife soon. Cain has dealt with bone chips in his right elbow for 10 years and it's finally causing enough pain to where he can't pitch. The rehab will last three months, so he'll be fine for spring training next season.
Aug 1 - 5:43 PM

Ricky Nolasco (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Low-A Cedar Rapids next week.

It's not clear which day he'll make his first rehab start, but Nolasco will need two outings before rejoining the Twins' rotation. Nolasco has been out since early July with flexor pronator stiffness but has progressed well recently.
Aug 1 - 5:35 PM

Joe Mauer (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment next week at Low-A Cedar Rapids.

It's not clear which day the assignment will begin. Mauer took batting practice on the field without incident Wednesday and is nearly ready for game action. He could be ready for activation by the end of next week if all goes well.
Aug 1 - 5:33 PM

Marlins placed RHP Henderson Alvarez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 30, with right shoulder inflammation.

Alvarez threw seven scoreless innings in his last outing, but he evidently must have been feeling soreness then or during his between-starts bullpen session. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Jacob Turner had been set to be bounced from the rotation follow the Jarred Cosart addition, but he'll now start Sunday in Alvarez's place.
Aug 1 - 5:26 PM

Matt Harvey (elbow) resumed throwing off a mound on Friday.

Harvey was originally hoping to throw off the bump in June, but the Mets decided to slow the right-hander's rehab from Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old will not pitch this season but is expected to be full-go for spring training next year.
Aug 1 - 5:09 PM

Brian Dozier is back in the Twins' lineup Friday.

Dozier missed Thursday's contest due to a swollen left thumb, but it was never a real concern. He's batting .234/.330/.421 with 19 homers, 48 RBI and 17 stolen bases for the Twins this season.
Aug 1 - 4:58 PM

Scooter Gennett was scratched from Friday's lineup with a left index finger injury.

It's appears to just be a day-to-day situation for the time being. Elian Herrera is taking Gennett's spot versus Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals.
Aug 1 - 4:56 PM

Red Sox placed OF Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 31, with lower back tightness.

It's the same back issue he's dealt with for much of the season. With Yoenis Cespedes now around to handle right field, the Red Sox would be best off just shutting Victorino down for the season. He's undergoing an MRI Friday before a timetable to return is established.
Aug 1 - 3:56 PM

Cardinals optioned RHP Carlos Martinez to Triple-A Memphis.

He's being sent there to stretch out as a starter, which is the best thing for his development rather than being used sporadically in relief. Martinez, who holds a 4.74 ERA with 64 strikeouts over 68 1/3 innings this season, will be back in September.
Aug 1 - 3:46 PM

Red Sox designated 1B/OF Mike Carp for assignment.

Carp had requested a trade last weekend. He'll get another opportunity elsewhere soon, whether it's by trade or someone else scooping him up off waivers. The 28-year-old is hitting just .198/.320/.279 with no homers this season but has been productive in the past and could be a nice bench bat for a contender.
