Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics will call up Sonny Gray from Triple-A Sacramento.

Gray is expected to be used in relief for the time being, but he could eventually get a shot to start. The former first-round pick has bounced back from a rough 2012 season to post a 2.81 ERA and 107/34 K/BB ratio over 102 1/3 Triple-A innings this season.

Luis Valbuena left Tuesday's game against the Yankees with a right leg injury.

Valbuena fell while running to first base in the bottom of the second inning. He looked to be in a good amount of pain as he limped to the home dugout at Minute Maid Park. Valbuena was starting at third base in this one, with top prospect Alex Bregman serving as the Astros' DH. Marwin Gonzalez moved to the hot corner and Jason Castro took over at first base.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said he expects Logan Morrison (wrist) to return Wednesday.

LoMo had been aiming to return Tuesday, but the decision was made to give his ailing forearm and wrist a little bit more rest. Steve Pearce is starting at first base for the Rays on Tuesday night against the Dodgers.

Homer Bailey (elbow) is set to make his 2016 debut on Sunday afternoon in San Diego.

It will be his first start at the major league level since undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in May 2015. Bailey has posted a concerning 5.14 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in eight minor league rehab appearances, but he went 98 pitches Monday at Triple-A Louisville (while lasting just 4 1/3 innings) and the Reds will let him try to find himself against big league competition.
Jul 26 - 8:11 PM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that he will stick with Ryan Madson at closer.

Madson blew his sixth save of the season in Monday's loss to the Rangers and has watched his ERA rise every month -- from 1.42 at the end of April, to 2.42 at the end of May, to 3.00 at the end of June, to the 3.77 mark where it sits now. Ryan Dull probably deserves a shot, but it's not going to happen yet. "At this point, we still have confidence in him," Melvin said of Madson. "He’s throwing as hard as he has all year here the last couple times out, he’s performed really well the last couple of times before (Monday)."

Carlos Martinez earned his 10th victory of the season as the Cardinals beat the Mets 3-2 in the first half of a doubleheader Tuesday at Citi Field.

Martinez wasn't at his sharpest, yielding four walks, five hits, and two earned runs over just five innings, but he was able to out-duel Mets ace Noah Syndergaard in the late-afternoon makeup for Monday night's rainout. The two runs Martinez allowed both came on a two-run shot by Mets catcher Rene Rivera in the bottom of the fourth. Martinez, 24, now stands 10-6 with a 2.87 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 99/41 K/BB ratio in 119 1/3 innings (19 starts) this season. Next up is a road start against the Marlins.
Jul 26 - 7:44 PM

Clayton Kershaw (back) has not been cleared for throwing.

Kershaw had a checkup with Dr. Robert Watkins last week but was apparently told to remain idle as he attempts to rehab a disc herniation in his lower back. There is no timetable for the ace left-hander's return to the Dodgers' rotation and it is possible he will wind up needing season-ending surgery.
Jul 26 - 7:26 PM

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Yasiel Puig (hamstring) is available off the bench Tuesday.

But that might only be in the event of an emergency. Puig tweaked his right hamstring last Thursday and has made just one pinch-hitting appearance since. "To me it's not to the point where I want him in [the starting lineup]," Roberts told reporters on Tuesday after watching Puig run the bases.
Jul 26 - 7:13 PM

Zack Greinke (oblique) is expected to make an appearance in an Arizona League game on Friday.

Greinke made it through a 40-pitch simulated appearance on Tuesday and should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment if he wakes up Wednesday feeling fine. He could return to the Diamondbacks after just one minor league outing. The ace right-hander has been sidelined since June 29 because of a left oblique strain.
Jul 26 - 6:22 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said he's hopeful Jake Lamb (hand) can return Friday.

Lamb has been dealing with a bruised left hand. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday night against the Brewers and is hitless over his last five games. The hope is the 25-year-old third baseman can get back to cranking homers with a bit of rest and rehab.
Jul 26 - 6:18 PM

Joey Gallo is starting at first base and batting sixth on Tuesday night against the Athletics.

Mitch Moreland is at designated hitter and Jurickson Profar is starting at shortstop. Gallo will probably get the majority of his playing time at first base, with Moreland seeing a dip in action. The 22-year-old slugger was sporting a .949 OPS with 19 home runs and 47 RBI in 70 games this season at Triple-A Round Rock.
Jul 26 - 5:59 PM

Julio Teheran (lat) is expected to start Saturday at home against the Phillies.

Teheran will get a bit of extra rest after leaving his last outing Friday against the Rockies because of a mild lat strain. He played long toss at 120 feet on Tuesday and threw his slider on flat ground. The 25-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.71 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 115/28 K/BB ratio in 129 2/3 innings this season for Atlanta.
