Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) is not ready for a rehab assignment yet.

Gutierrez has done some hitting, but his leg issues are still a concern. He remains out indefinitely.

An MRI shows Brendan Ryan has a Grade 2 right calf strain.

That's pretty serious, and the severity was underlined by the Yankees' expedience in acquiring shortstop Gregorio Petit from the Astros. Ryan will start the year on the disabled list, and it's unclear at this point how long the strain will keep him sidelined.

Rockies purchased the contract of RHP Rafael Betancourt from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The former Rockies closer has enjoyed a career resurgence this spring following Tommy John surgery, posting a 1.04 ERA and 10/1 K/BB ratio in 8 2/3 innings of work. With Rex Brothers in the minors, Betancourt could even work his way into a setup role for closer LaTroy Hawkins. It's worth remembering for those in fantasy leagues that count holds.

Rockies optioned LHP Rex Brothers to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Brothers was never right this spring, getting a late start to game action for what Rockies manager Walt Weiss said were "mechanical things" and posting an 8.22 ERA with six walks in 7 2/3 Cactus League innings. His stay may be temporary -- he's one of the Rockies' best relievers when he's right -- but it's an unexpected move at present.

Yankees acquired SS Gregorio Petit from the Astros for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Petit wasn't going to break camp with the Astros, but he'll have a shot to be a backup infielder with the Brendan Ryan-less Yankees. The trade is indicative of how serious Ryan's calf strain might be. Petit, 30, batted .278/.300/.423 in 37 games with the Astros last season.

Avisail Garcia went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Wednesday's Cactus League win over the Mariners.

Garcia opened the scoring for the White Sox, singling in a run in the first inning. He plated another with an RBI single in the second, but the big hit was a two-run homer in the fourth. The 23-year-old is hitting .328 with eight RBI this spring, and after injury marred his 2014 season a healthy Garcia should deliver on his big promise this year.

Christian Vazquez will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday.

It's a tough break for the 24-year-old, as he was set to be the starting catcher for the Red Sox this season. He'll likely be sidelined all of 2015, although position players generally come back faster from the surgery than pitchers. The Sox will make due with Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon in Vazquez' absence. Blake Swihart should be on the way soon.
Apr 1 - 7:23 PM

Carlos Martinez blanked the Mets for six innings, allowing just three hits, in the Cardinals' 5-4 win Wednesday.

Martinez also legged out an infield single after Wilmer Flores chose to hang back on his bouncer to shortstop. Martinez, named the Cardinals' fifth starter Monday, is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 22 innings this spring. Because of his upside, he shouldn't be left unowned in any mixed leagues.
Apr 1 - 5:27 PM

Chris Sale (foot) struck out 13 batters over six-plus innings Wednesday in a minor league game.

Sale gave up one run on two hits in the impressive outing against a group of Reds minor leaguers. The ace left-hander is making steady progress from an avulsion fracture in his right foot and is penciled in for an April 12 regular-season debut. If that holds, his first opponent will be the light-hitting Twins.
Apr 1 - 5:14 PM

Bruce Rondon was scratched from a scheduled appearance Wednesday due to shoulder soreness.

It's obviously a bad time for the 24-year-old flame-thrower to be developing an arm injury. Rondon may now be in danger of missing the start of the regular season. "If he can’t pitch, obviously it’s a lot tougher to be on the team," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Wednesday. "From that sense, it’s a big concern."
Apr 1 - 4:19 PM

Adam Warren has officially been named the Yankees' fifth starter.

Warren won the job this spring by posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 11/1 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 Grapefruit League innings. The 27-year-old right-hander owns a 3.47 ERA and 8.0 K/9 in 158 career major league frames and should have early value in AL-only fantasy formats.
Apr 1 - 4:16 PM

Corey Dickerson is out of the Rockies' Cactus League lineup again on Wednesday.

Dickerson was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to back tightness -- something that has been bothering him since the weekend -- but he told reporters Wednesday morning that he expects to be fine for Opening Day. The 25-year-old outfielder posted an excellent .312/.364/.567 batting line with 24 home runs and eight stolen bases in 131 games last season for Colorado.
