Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said that Brett Lawrie (ankle) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Friday.

The assumption had been that Lawrie wouldn't return until after the All-Star break, but it appears that he could beat that timetable. "It could be, we’ve talked about it, talked about the Orioles series," Anthopoulos said Thursday. "We’re going to watch him play tonight (with Buffalo) and see how he does and we’ll go from there." Lawrie has been playing second base during his rehab assignment and could be used at the position with the big club, though Anthopoulos said that would be up to manager John Gibbons.

Orioles designated DH/INF Pedro Alvarez for assignment.

Steve Wilkerson will take his spot on the 40-man roster. Alvarez has struggled with a rough .180/.283/.414 batting line and eight homers through 45 games this season.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon expects Javier Baez (elbow) to be available to start in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader vs. the Dodgers.

Baez already indicated that he would likely need just one day off after taking a pitch off his elbow Sunday. Maddon planned to check with Baez and the team trainer before officially putting him in the lineup for the nightcap, but the early signs are promising.

Clayton Kershaw (back) will make a minor league rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Kershaw hinted at possibly rejoining the Dodgers' rotation this weekend after completing a simulated game on Monday, but the Dodgers don't want to rush his return. Instead, he'll throw four innings in Triple-A on Saturday, setting up his activation for a probable return next Thursday against the Cubs. Kershaw has made just one start dating back to May 1, but the Dodgers have done a great job holding down the fort.

Zach Davies (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the expectation is that Davies will require three rehab starts. He's already had two DL stints this year due to shoulder issues, so the Brewers want to play it safe. If all goes well, he could be back in early-to-mid July. Davies owns a 5.23 ERA over eight starts with the Brewers this season.

Yu Darvish (triceps) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Wednesday.

Darvish was originally scheduled to throw on Tuesday, but it was pushed back because of the doubleheader. Either way, he's making progress. Pending how he feels coming out of the simulated game, it's possible the next step could be a minor league rehab assignment.
Jun 19 - 11:07 AM

Marcus Stroman (shoulder) is expected to make his return from the disabled list this weekend against the Angels.

Stroman had his rehab start rained out Monday with Double-A New Hampshire, but he was still able to throw a simulated game, clearing the way for his return. It's unclear how far the Blue Jays plan to push him in his first start back. Given his struggles prior to his DL stint, it's understandable if fantasy owners decide to wait and see.

Miguel Rojas drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 in a 5-4 victory over the Giants on Monday.

Rojas had the biggest hit of the game, finishing a two-run comeback against the Giants with a knock against Hunter Strickland to score Cameron Maybin and give the Marlins the lead, and ultimately, the victory. The three runs batted in give him 27 on the season, and he's now slashing .235/.301/.350 over 71 games.

Jacob deGrom allowed two runs -- one earned -- over eight innings in a rout of the Rockies on Monday.

deGrom scattered five hits, and he walked just one while striking out seven. Another sterling effort from the National League ERA leader, who sees that number drop to 1.51 with this strong outing. Amazingly, despite his remarkable numbers, this is just the fifth win on the season, as he's struggled with bullpen issues and run support. He didn't have an issue with either tonight. deGrom will make his next start on Saturday against the Dodgers.
Jun 18 - 11:54 PM

Brandon Nimmo went 4-for-6 with two homers and four RBI in a 12-2 victory over the Rockies on Monday.

Nimmo now has back-to-back three-hit games, and three homers in that stretch. He led off the game with an inside-the-park homer, and he hit one over the fence in the seventh to give him two on the day and 12 on the year. Nimmo has his OPS at 1.008 and doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. He's one of the true bright spots for the Mets in 2018.
Jun 18 - 11:53 PM

Alex Bregman hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth Monday against the Rays.

That's 12 wins in a row for the Astros. Bregman had been 0-for-4 before delivering his 22nd double of the year off Sergio Romo in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Marwin Gonzalez and Max Stassi. The 24-year-old third baseman up to 40 RBI to go along with 43 runs scored in 71 games. He's probably not going to end the season among the league leaders in any traditional category, but his all-around production makes him a top fantasy infielder.
Jun 18 - 11:46 PM

Nick Pivetta struck out 13 batters over 7 1/3 innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Cardinals.

Philadelphia wound up winning the game in the bottom of the 10th, on walk-off two-run double by Aaron Altherr. Pivetta was sharp, yielding only four hits -- two of them solo homers -- while setting a new career-high in strikeouts. He's sporting a 4.08 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 94/22 K/BB ratio in 79 1/3 innings (15 starts) this season. Up next is a road start against the division-rival Nationals.
