FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox and Yankees are among about a dozen teams who have checked in with the Phillies about the availability of Michael Young.

The Red Sox would play Young at third base while the Yankees could shuffle him between the hot corner and first base. Interestingly, Rosenthal notes that the Red Sox sent VP of player personnel Allard Baird to watch the Phillies in back-to-back series just prior to the All-Star break. Still, it's unclear if the Phillies will sell, as they sit at 48-48 on the year and are reportedly in the market for outfield and bullpen help. Young, who will be a free agent after the season, as a full no-trade clause.

According to Marc Carig of Newsday, the Mets' extension talks with Neil Walker "have hit a snag."

Carig says "it’s still possible negotiations could heat up once more," but there is nothing imminent at this time. Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported on Sunday that the two sides were discussing a new deal that would run through 2019 and be worth "north of $40 million," but there are apparently some disagreements in the details. Walker will earn $17.2 million in 2017 after accepting the Mets' one-year qualifying offer in November. He is currently scheduled to become a free agent next winter.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told Fantasy Sports Radio on Monday that Shawn Kelley, Blake Treinen, and Koda Glover are competing to be the team's closer.

Rizzo also said that he's had no recent trade talks for relief help, so the job will probably go to one of these three. Kelley figures to be the front-runner here in February after registering a strong 2.64 ERA, 0.897 WHIP, and 80/11 K/BB ratio in 58 innings last season for Washington. It's a story we'll be tracking all spring.

Jeurys Familia returned to Mets camp Monday.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reported Saturday that Familia's weekend absence from the Mets' spring training facilities had something to do with MLB's ongoing investigation into the closer's October domestic violence charge. So maybe we'll be hearing about a suspension soon from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. Addison Reed projects to open the 2017 season as New York's ninth-inning man, unless Familia somehow avoids punishment.

Yankees signed LHP Jon Niese to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Niese will get a look as both a starter and reliever in spring camp. The club had been in the market for a left-handed setup man, but found the cost of Jerry Blevins and Boone Logan to be too prohibitive.
Feb 19 - 6:27 PM

Orioles acquired LHP Vidal Nuno from the Dodgers for RHP Ryan Moseley.

The 29-year-old southpaw has now been traded four times in the past three years. Nuno compiled a 3.53 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 7.8 K/9 over 58 2/3 innings primarily out of the bullpen for the Mariners in 2016. He'll add valuable depth to the Orioles with his ability to both start and pitch effectively out of the bullpen.
Feb 19 - 6:09 PM

Eric Gagne told MLB.com's Ken Gurnick that he's considering making a comeback.

Gagne is now 41 and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 or even been in a spring training camp since 2010. However, he's been throwing bullpen sessions as he prepares to pitch for Canada in the World Baseball Classic and says he's getting his fastball into the 90s and also featuring his trademark changeup. "I feel great. It's almost scary," Gagne said. The righty has had throwing sessions with the Padres and Diamondbacks. Obviously, it's a huge long shot that Gagne pitches again in the majors, let alone does it effectively. However, it will be something fun to track this spring.

Zack Wheeler (elbow) threw a 21-pitch bullpen session on Sunday.

Wheeler had some tenderness in his pitching elbow during a 'pen session last week, but he got through Sunday's session with no issues. It's obviously encouraging, but the righty isn't out of the woods yet after all of his arm problems the last two seasons. If he can stay healthy, Wheeler stands a good chance at capturing the final spot in the Mets' rotation.
Feb 19 - 12:38 PM

Padres signed RHP Jered Weaver to a one-year, $3 million contract.

The deal was first reported on Saturday and is now official. Weaver's velocity and results have tumbled in the wrong direction the last few years, as he posted a 5.06 ERA in 2016 while his fastball routinely sat in the low- to mid-80s. However, the Padres' projected rotation right now is laughably bad to the point that the veteran right-hander might be the favorite to start for them on Opening Day. Weaver's days as a fantasy contributor are surely over.
Feb 19 - 12:08 PM

Diamondbacks signed LHP Jorge De La Rosa to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says that De La Rosa will make $2.25 million if in the majors and will compete for a spot in the D'Backs Opening Day bullpen. Just 12 of the left-hander's 235 appearances since 2007 have come as a reliever, but it's probably De La Rosa's best role at this point. The southpaw put up a 5.51 ERA across 134 innings for the Rockies last season and will turn 36 in April.
Feb 19 - 12:05 PM

Josh Donaldson (calf) was walking around on crutches Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.

Donaldson suffered a strained right calf while running on Friday. He should be fine for Opening Day as long as he can avoid a setback, but the Blue Jays will obviously take a cautious approach with their star third baseman. Donaldson has played at least 155 games each of the last four seasons.
Feb 19 - 11:54 AM

David Wright (neck) played catch indoors on Sunday.

He didn't play catch outside with the rest of his Mets teammates, but it was the first time Wright has done any throwing since last June's cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. The club will continue to bring the veteran third baseman along slowly this spring, as Wright's participation in Grapefruit League games figures to be fairly limited. He's obviously a major health question mark going into 2017.
