Rockies placed RHP Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list with appendicitis.

The disabled list stint is retroactive to July 15 and Betancourt should be ready to return when first eligible. Rex Brothers is going to serve as the Rockies' closer in Betancourt's absence and is a must-own in standard formats for the 10-or-so days that he is in the ninth-inning role. Mitchell Boggs was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move to provide middle relief depth.

Devin Mesoraco (quad) is tentatively scheduled to return to the lineup on Wednesday.

"I'm optimistically thinking that he'll be ready to play tomorrow," Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday morning. "[What I don't want to do with injured players] is to put them in there and find out they can't go, or shouldn't go." Mesoraco's left quad tightened up on him during Sunday's game, but he's improved since then and is expected to be fine for Opening Day.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy confirmed Tuesday that Tim Lincecum will begin the season as the team's No. 5 starter.

Lincecum entered camp as the clear favorite for the role but then stumbled with a 6.27 ERA. Luckily for him, Yusmeiro Petit and Ryan Vogelsong have been arguably just as bad or worse. Lincecum will still get strikeouts for fantasy owners, but that's all they can count on from him at this point.

Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) will return to Grapefruit League action on Wednesday.

Ellsbury was given clearance to play in "real" games after going 2-for-5 at the plate in a minor league contest on Tuesday. It will be his first game since March 15, but there's no concern that Ellsbury won't be ready for Opening Day. "I've listened to them the entire process," Ellsbury said. "If they feel, 'Hey, you're a go for tomorrow,' I'll be out there tomorrow. If they're like, 'Hey, get some swings in and be out there the next day,' I'm fine with that too."
Mar 31 - 6:44 PM

Aroldis Chapman was removed from Tuesday's appearance for precautionary reasons due to a right hamstring injury.

Chapman was pulled from the game after a long discussion with Reds coaches and trainers. The closer wanted to continue and insists that his hamstring is fine, so it sounds like this isn't anything to worry about. Expect Chapman to be available to pitch in a day or two.

Roberto Osuna has made the Blue Jays' Opening Day bullpen.

Osuna will become the youngest pitcher in Jays history when he debuts. The 20-year-old right-hander has allowed just one run and struck out nine batters in 10 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League. He will pitch in middle relief at first but could eventually move into more of a setup role.
Mar 31 - 5:19 PM

Ken Giles was lifted from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game after experiencing pain in his back.

The discomfort was in the mid-to-lower part of the 24-year-old right-hander's back. Giles had a terrific rookie season in 2014 and had been pitching well this spring. He expects to be fine for Opening Day.

John Axford left Rockies camp Tuesday after his two-year-old son was bit by a rattlesnake.

Jameson Axford got bit twice on the right foot and was taken to a Phoenix hospital, where he was given anti-venom. He is now in stable condition, but his toes may have to be amputated. Awful stuff.

Luke Gregerson has been named the Astros' closer.

It was a predictable decision. Gregerson posted a 2.12 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio in 72 1/3 innings last season for the A's and should carry considerable fantasy value this year on a quickly-improving Astros team.
Mar 31 - 4:12 PM

Anthony Rendon will seek a third opinion from Dr. Steven Singleton regarding his knee injury.

It should be noted that Rendon, and not the team, has chosen to look for the third opinion. He saw Dr. James Andrews on Monday and a left MCL sprain was the confirmed diagnosis. Rendon has been dealing with this sprain since March 9 and is not expected to be ready for Opening Day. Yunel Escobar is tentatively slated to take his place at the hot corner, though Escobar has not played third since 2007.
Mar 31 - 3:30 PM

Coco Crisp (elbow) said that he "doesn't know" if he'll be ready for Opening Day.

Crisp played in a minor league camp game on Tuesday, going 0-3 with a walk. The A's have been going slow with Crisp this spring. That he is still uncertain of his status for the opener could be an indication that a DL trip is an increasing possibility. Crisp has been moved to left field from center, in the hopes of preserving the veteran's health.

Brewers manager Ron Roenick said that Ryan Braun's thumb is no longer a concern.

Braun underwent thumb surgery in October and has been on the mend ever since. He appears to be fully recovered. Braun will be ready for Opening Day. As long as he's healthy, he remains one of the best hitters in the game. The thumb issue is one to watch during the season, but for now, he should be good to go.
