Padres signed LHP Jason Lane to a minor league contract.

Lane, 36, transitioned from an outfielder to a reliever last season and has been assigned to Triple-A Tucson. He hasn't appeared in the major leagues since 2007 and will serve as organizational depth.

Red Sox acquired RHP Jake Peavy from the White Sox and RHP Brayan Villarreal from the Tigers in a three-team deal; White Sox acquired OF Avisail Garcia from the Tigers and RHP Francellis Montas, RHP Jeffrey Wendelken and shortstop Cleuluis Rondon from the Red Sox; Tigers acquired SS Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox.

One can argue about how much good Peavy will really do the Red Sox, but the price is right. Iglesias was never going to keep hitting like this, and while he should make it as a long-term shortstop, he's not likely to be an above average regular. Peavy, who is making $14.5 million this year and next, was 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA and a 76/17 K/BB ratio in 80 IP for the White Sox. He missed time earlier in the year with a broken rib. His biggest problem has been the home run ball -- he's allowed 14 -- but switching from U.S. Cellular to Fenway will help there, so his fantasy value should get a slight boost.

Dustin Pedroia went 2-for-4 with a home run as the Red Sox beat the Mariners 8-2 on Tuesday.

Pedroia hit a two-run shot in the second inning and added an RBI single in the fourth. The home run was the second baseman's first since July 9 and just his seventh on the year. Despite the low home run total, he's driven in 61 runs and is batting .296/.374/.411 with 25 doubles and 14 stolen bases in 107 games.
Jul 31 - 12:30 AM

Juan Lagares went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the Mets' 4-2 win over the Marlins in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Lagares has been absolutely on fire in July, going 24-for-65 (.369) with eight multi-hit games. Lagares plated two with a triple in the fourth inning, giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead. His torrid month has raised his overall line to .275/.307/.412, and he's a viable mixed league option in deeper leagues while he's hitting like this.
Jul 31 - 12:09 AM

Freddie Freeman went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in the Braves' 11-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

The first baseman launched a solo shot in the first inning before unloading a three-run bomb in the seventh. He also walked and scored three times total in the game. He's driven in 69 runs on the year and is batting .301/.379/.477 with 13 home runs through 93 games.
Jul 30 - 11:44 PM

Athletics acquired INF Alberto Callaspo from the Angels in exchange for 2B Grant Green.

Callaspo will play second base in Oakland, a position he hasn't manned regularly since 2009. He's put up an underwhelming .253/.323/.348 with five homers and 35 RBI this season, though his career line of .273/.334/.380 is a bit better.
Jul 30 - 11:35 PM

Yadier Molina will receive an MRI on his right knee and Jenifer Langosch believes a "DL move seems certain."

Molina left the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Pirates with a right knee sprain. St. Louis will use a combination of Tony Cruz and Rob Johnson behind the plate if Molina is sidelined, obviously a costly downgrade.
Jul 30 - 11:35 PM

Mike Moustakas went 2-for-3 with a walk, two home runs and four RBI in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.

Moustakas, like teammate Eric Hosmer, endured a miserable first two months of the season but rebounded to hit .274 in June. He'd been producing in July until going 1-for-12 over his last four games. The third baseman is batting just .224 and is on pace for 14 homers.
Jul 30 - 11:18 PM

Michael Young went 2-for-4 with a home run in the Phillies' 7-3 win over the Giants on Tuesday.

Young has been at the center of trade rumors in recent days, and in what may have been his final game in a Phillies uniform he launched his eighth homer of the season. He also drove in two runs and scored twice. The 36-year-old has been rumored to be coveted by the Red Sox among others. If he is dealt before Wednesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, he'll carry a .279 batting average with him to his new club.
Jul 30 - 11:17 PM

Andrew McCutchen singled and belted a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.

McCutchen got an assist from Matt Holliday on his longball, as Holliday jumped for the ball at the wall and watched it go off his glove and over the fence. The outfielder has five hits in the first three games of the series, contests that have all been won by the Pirates. Pittsburgh suddenly has a 1 1/2 game lead in the NL Central.
Jul 30 - 11:14 PM

Yan Gomes went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the Indians' 7-4 win over the White Sox on Tuesday.

Gomes worked a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning before delivering a two-run double to pad the Indians' lead in the eighth. The double was his ninth in 148 at-bats, and he's driven in 26 runs. Despite not being an everyday player, the 26-year-old catcher is batting .291/.325/.520 this season.
Jul 30 - 10:51 PM

CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that Jose Iglesias will be traded to the Tigers in a three-team deal that will send Jake Peavy to the Red Sox.

Avisail Garcia is likely headed to the White Sox in the deal, and there are other players expected to be involved. Iglesias represents insurance for Jhonny Peralta, who is expected to face a suspension for his involvement with Biogenesis. His offense has predictably faded after a hot start, but he'll give the Tigers' infield defense a much-needed boost.
