Lance Berkman (hip) took batting practice Monday.

It's the first time he's done so since landing on the disabled list with left hip inflammation. Berkman said he felt better while swinging from the left side of the plate but overall things went well. He's not interested in going out on a rehab assignment, so it appears that he could be activated pretty soon. "Just whenever I can do the things pain free is the goal," Berkman said.

Red Sox purchased the contract of RHP Henry Owens from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Owens will make his major league debut on Tuesday night against the rival Yankees. The 23-year-old right-hander had registered a 3.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 103/56 K/BB ratio through 122 1/3 innings this season at Pawtucket and is worth a try in most mixed fantasy leagues. He was the No. 19 prospect on MLB.com's top 100 this winter.

Rangers optioned OF Leonys Martin to Triple-A Round Rock.

Martin has batted just .220/.265/.314 in 309 plate appearances this season for the Rangers, who will hope that a short demotion to the minors gets him going like it did for second baseman Rougned Odor. Delino DeShields Jr. has been serving as Texas' starting center fielder.

Tigers owner Mike Ilitch has fired general manager Dave Dombrowski.

Al Avila is taking over as the club's new GM and executive vice president of baseball operations. "I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities," Ilitch wrote in a statement to the media. "I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership." Detroit is in the midst of a highly dissapointing 2015 season and became sudden sellers at last week's trade deadline, but the firing is still a shock. Dombrowski had an incredible run of regular-season success with the Tigers, winning four straight AL Central titles between 2011-2014.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has ruled out Michael Pineda (forearm) returning in August.

It's not a big surprise. Pineda was shut down last week with a right flexor forearm muscle strain and is still a few days away from throwing. The Yankees will likely have him make a couple of minor league rehab starts, so a return in September is more realistic.
Aug 4 - 3:41 PM

Brett Gardner is not in the Yankees' starting lineup Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Gardner will take a seat against left-hander Henry Owens. Chris Young is starting in left field and will bat second.
Aug 4 - 3:26 PM

Aaron Sanchez was suspended three games by MLB for throwing at Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar on Sunday.

Things were tense all weekend between the clubs and Sunday's incident caused both benches to empty. Sanchez is expected to appeal the suspension. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons has also received a one-game suspension for coming back onto the field following his ejection earlier in the game.
Aug 4 - 3:08 PM

Braves placed 1B Freddie Freeman on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain.

A tough break for Freeman, who just recently returned from a right wrist contusion. He suffered the injury during Monday's game and will now require another extended absence. Chris Johnson and Joey Terdoslavich figure to fill in at first base.
Aug 4 - 2:30 PM

C.J. Wilson is scheduled to meet with with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on August 11 for a second opinion on his elbow.

Wilson has been pitching through bone spurs and is currently leaning toward season-ending surgery, but he won't make a final decision until he meets with ElAttrache. The Angels have approached him about potentially putting off surgery and pitching out of the bullpen down the stretch, but there's still a good chance that his season is over.
Aug 4 - 1:50 PM

Yankees placed OF/INF Dustin Ackley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 3, with a right lumbar strain.

Ackley was acquired from the Mariners last week and was a potential threat for playing time at second base, but that will have to wait for now. The Yankees called up right-hander Caleb Cotham to take his place on the active roster.
Aug 4 - 1:04 PM

Garrett Richards allowed four runs and struck out a season-high 11 batters in 7 1/3 innings as the Angels hung on to beat the Indians on Monday.

Richards fell behind 3-0 after the first inning, but corrected course after that. He gave up four hits and three walks along with the 11 K's. The right-hander moves to 11-8 on the year with a 3.46 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and a 102/44 K/BB ratio over 130 innings. Richards will take the hill at home against the Orioles in his next start.
Aug 4 - 1:11 AM

Tyler Wilson held the Athletics to two runs in 7 2/3 innings, earning a win in a spot start on Monday.

Wilson scattered six hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts. He allowed a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to Ike Davis, and the other on an RBI double from Stephen Vogt in the eighth. The right-hander has been effective in 24 2/3 innings in the majors this year, sporting a 2.19 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 7/5 K/BB ratio.
