Miguel Montero will visit the doctor Wednesday after feeling slight pain in his back during batting practice prior to Tuesday's game.

Now we know why he's sitting out a second straight contest. It doesn't sound like a major concern, but more will obviously be known about his status after his doctor's visit. Wil Nieves is starting at catcher again Wednesday.

Yasiel Puig (hamstring) has yet to resume running the bases.

Puig did some running in the outfield two days in a row over the weekend, but he's evidently not yet been cleared to run the bases yet and won't begin a rehab assignment until that happens. It had been looking like Puig had a good shot to return on May 10 when first eligible, but that's looking less likely now.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) "is said to be feeling better" and hopes to return to the lineup "in a couple days."

Ramirez avoided a serious left shoulder injury when he slammed into a side wall on Monday and has made nice progress since then. The Red Sox will obviously be careful with him, but it sounds like there's a chance he could return to action before the end of the week. Ramirez is batting .283/.340/.609 with 10 home runs this season.

Michael Morse is not in the Marlins' lineup Wednesday.

He's now been benched for three straight games and four out of the last five contests. Morse isn't injured, but he's hitting just .193/.253/.284 and Justin Bour has seven hits in 14 at-bats since his promotion. Bour is at first base again on Wednesday.

Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart confirmed that the club has interest in Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

"He's a player that we're going to talk a little bit more in-depth about," Stewart said Tuesday. "I have to see what our scouts are saying and talk to our internal guys, and if it makes sense then we'll make the next step." Saltalamacchia, who was officially released by the Marlins on Tuesday, makes a lot of sense as an upgrade over Tuffy Gosewisch. The D'Backs can get him cheaply now that his old $21 million contract is off the books. They're not the only squad that's interested, however, as Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith says "a few teams" are in the mix. The Royals, Indians and Mariners have also been connected to Salty.

Royals activated RHP Greg Holland from the 15-day disabled list.

Holland has been on the shelf since April 18 with a pectoral strain but threw a simulated game over the weekend and is ready to go. He'll slide back into his closer's role, pushing Wade Davis to the eighth inning.

Matt Carpenter hit a three-run homer and collected four RBI in all as the Cardinals came back to defeat the Cubs 7-4 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals trailed 4-1 when Carpenter stepped to the dish with two runners on in the fifth inning, but he pulled an inside pitch into the right field bleachers for his fifth homer of the year. Carpenter later added an RBI sacrifice fly. The superlatives have all been used to describe Carpenter's 2015 season to date, as he's now hitting .346/.412/.644 with 20 RBI and 23 runs scored to go with his five dingers.

Carlos Perez made his major league debut on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a walk-off solo home run to help the Angels outlast the Mariners.

Perez became the first player to hit a walk-off home run in his major league debut since Miguel Cabrera accomplished the feat for the Marlins on June 20, 2003. Perez had been tearing it up at Triple-A Salt Lake prior to his promotion on Monday, batting .361/.418/.556. With the Angels really hurting for production out of the catching position, it wouldn't be shocking to see them ride him while he's hot.
May 6 - 12:55 AM

Justin Turner finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Dodgers' 8-2 win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

Turner had a couple singles to go along with a three-run homer in the win. The dinger was his fourth of the year, and all four have come in his last six games. Finding playing time has been difficult on a loaded Dodgers club, but Turner has batted .333/.375/.689 in 45 at-bats thus far.
May 6 - 12:45 AM

Ryan Vogelsong delivered seven scoreless innings to earn a win versus the Padres on Tuesday.

Vogelsong had not performed well in two relief appearances and three starts coming into Tuesday's outing, but he managed to shut down the Padres, claiming ownership of baseball's best offense. The right-hander held them to three hits (all singles) and two walks while striking out four. The sterling performance lowers his ERA to 6.84 and his WHIP to 1.67 with a 21/13 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 innings. Vogelsong will look for a repeat performance in a home start against the Marlins next.
May 6 - 12:42 AM

Jesse Chavez kept the Twins largely under wraps Tuesday, allowing only an unearned run over 7 1/3 innings in the Athletics' 2-1 victory.

Chavez gave the Twins nothing all night, surrendering only four singles and one walk in the outing. He struck out seven on the evening. Things got a little dicey -- an error led to a run and Tyler Clippard had to work out of a jam in the eighth inning to retain the lead -- but the A's held on to give Chavez his first win. He'll try to keep his strong start to the season going Sunday at the Mariners.
May 6 - 12:14 AM

Jeff Samardzija was shaky early but recovered to go seven innings, limiting the Tigers to two runs in the White Sox' 5-2 victory Tuesday.

Samardzija appeared to be heading down a familiar road after allowing runs in the first and second innings, but he settled in to hold the Tigers off the board over the ensuing five innings. Samardzija gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out seven in the win. It hasn't come easy for the right-hander this year, but he's now 2-2 with a more respectable 4.38 ERA. An interleague date with the Reds on Sunday is on tap.
