CC Sabathia struggled once again Friday, giving up seven runs over five innings in a loss to the Rays.

Six of the runs scored in the second inning. Sabathia struck out six and walked three in the loss. The big southpaw has allowed 16 runs in 14 innings over his last three starts, bringing his ERA up to 4.65 for the year. If he can't get right, it's hard to imagine the Yankees going anywhere.

Padres manager Andy Green said Friday that Brandon Maurer will get the "first crack" at the ninth inning after dealing Fernando Rodney away on Thursday.

He isn't locked in as the official closer yet, but will have a chance to stake his claim to the role with a few successful conversions. Many had assumed that Ryan Buchter, who had functioned as the primary setup man for Rodney, would get the first shot at the ninth inning, but it looks as though Green is more comfortable keeping the southpaw in the eighth inning. Maurer is worthy of an add in all formats until he proves otherwise.

Carlos Santana blasted a solo home run in the top half of the 19th inning on Friday, powering the Indians to a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays, their franchise-record 14th consecutive victory.

Santana's game-changing blast came off of Jays' infielder Darwin Barney, who was the second infielder to take the mound for the Blue Jays in the contest. Santana also doubled and walked in the marathon afternoon, finishing the day 2-for-8 and he scored both of the team's runs.

Buster Posey is not in the Giants starting lineup for Friday's matchup against Shelby Miller and the Diamondbacks.

It seems to be just a routine day of rest for the hard-hitting backstop, which is disappointing for fantasy owners who had hoped for fireworks against Shelby Miller. Trevor Brown will start behind the dish and bat eighth for the Giants.
Jul 1 - 6:29 PM

Yu Darvish (shoulder) will make a minor league rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Monday.

Darvish is expected to throw 45 pitches in that outing against Northwest ARkansas. He'll need a couple of starts before he's ready to rejoin the Rangers rotation, which is expected to come after the All-Star break.
Jul 1 - 6:14 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Friday that Zack Greinke is doubtful to make his next start on Tuesday.

Hale did say there was a possibility he could rejoin the rotation next weekend, missing just one start. Greinke was forced to leave Tuesday's outing due to tightness in his left oblique. The Diamondbacks will obviously take every possible precaution not to risk further aggravation. Zack Godley seems the most likely candidate to start in his place on Tuesday.
Jul 1 - 6:10 PM

Dexter Fowler (hamstring) may not be ready to return from the disabled list on Monday when first eligible.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated that Fowler might not play at all during the series against the Reds that goes through July 6. Fowler has been out for nearly two weeks of action with a strained right hamstring. Albert Almora, Matt Szczur and Jason Heyward have handled center field in his absence.

Baseball America's Ben Badler reports that the Athletics are expected to sign Cuban outfielder Lazaro Armenteros for around $3 million when the international signing period begins Saturday.

There have been mixed reviews on how "Lazarito" has looked during showcases for teams, but everyone agrees that there's plenty of raw ability there. He's only 17 years old and will take a long time to develop, but the A's are evidently willing to buy the expensive lottery ticket.
Jul 1 - 5:34 PM

Yunel Escobar (knee) went through a full workout Friday and the hope is that he'll return to the lineup this weekend.

Escobar is out of the lineup for the seventh straight game, but the Angels are optimistic that he'll be ready to go on Saturday or Sunday. If he's not, the disabled list will finally be considered at that point.
Jul 1 - 5:16 PM

David Peralta (back) took 30 swings off a tee on Friday.

It's the first time he's swung the bat since going on the disabled list two and a half weeks ago with a lower back sprain. Peralta will hit off a tee again Saturday and also take some soft-toss. It's possible he'll be ready to take batting practice by Monday.
Jul 1 - 5:08 PM

Stephen Piscotty (foot) remained out of the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

The good news is he's available off the bench and should be back in there Saturday. Brandon Moss is in right field Friday.
Jul 1 - 4:24 PM

Aledmys Diaz (eye) is back in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

Diaz missed a few days of action after a pitch he foul-tipped bounced off the dirt and caught him above the eye. He's batting second and playing shortstop against Matt Garza and the Brewers.
