Cardinals acquired INF Juan Herrera from the Indians for LHP Marc Rzepczynski.

Herrera, a 20-year-old from the Dominican, has batted .275/.366/.369 with one home run and two stolen bases in 39 games this season for Low-A Mahoning Valley. He's raw but not a bad return for a struggling reliever.

X-rays on Mike Trout's left shoulder came back negative.

Trout exited Wednesday's game against the A's after being hit in the shoulder blade by a pitch, but he's expected to be fine. The hope is that he'll be ready to go on Friday versus the Astros.

Jesus Montero has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for dimethylbutylamine.

Montero has spent all of 2016 at Triple-A in the Blue Jays' organization, batting .317/.349/.438 with 11 homers. The former top prospect will turn 27 in November and his future in the majors is now looking as cloudy as ever.

The Indians have shot down a report from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports that Michael Brantley (shoulder) could miss "significant time" next season.

Heyman's report said that Brantley's rehab from a second right shoulder surgery could drag past Opening Day next year, but the Indians don't think that will be the case. "Our expectation is that he'll be ready for spring training," said president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti. "We were told after the second surgery that the timeline (for recovery) would be four to five months. As far as I know, nothing has changed." There's no reason to doubt the Indians' belief that Brantley will be ready to go for Opening Day, but the reality is there's a lot up in the air with him given how this year went.
Sep 29 - 4:58 PM

Devon Travis (shoulder) is back in the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Thursday night.

Travis missed a handful of games after injuring his left shoulder in Monday's benches-clearing fracas with the Yankees. He is starting at second base and batting ninth Thursday versus Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.

Kris Bryant is out of the Cubs' starting lineup on Thursday night against the Pirates.

Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler are also sitting as Cubs manager Joe Maddon continues to find rest for his regulars with the NLDS set to begin next week. Tommy La Stella is at third base and batting leadoff. Javier Baez is at first base and Albert Almora is in center field.
Sep 29 - 3:40 PM

Jason Hammel has been scratched from his scheduled Friday start against the Reds due to right elbow tightness.

Hammel has looked off all month, and this might officially rule him out of the mix for the Cubs' postseason roster. A new starter for Friday has not been announced. The National League Central champs could make it a bullpen game at Great American Ball Park.
Sep 29 - 3:33 PM

Mookie Betts is out of the Red Sox starting lineup on Thursday night against the Yankees.

Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez, and Sandy Leon are also receiving a day of rest after the Red Sox clinched the American League East title on Wednesday night with the Blue Jays' loss to the Orioles. David Ortiz is starting at DH in what will be his final game at Yankee Stadium.
Sep 29 - 3:26 PM

Yasmany Tomas was scratched from the Diamondbacks' lineup Thursday with a stiff neck.

Brandon Drury is in left field and Socrates Brito is now in right field for the afternoon tilt at Nationals Park. Tomas could very well remain limited over the regular season's final weekend.
Sep 29 - 12:28 PM

Jason Kipnis is getting the day off Thursday.

Indians manager Terry Francona is continuing to find rest for his regulars with the American League Central all wrapped up. Carlos Santana will also sit Thursday. Michael Martinez is at second base and batting ninth versus Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris.
Sep 29 - 11:04 AM

Daniel Murphy (glute) is out of the Nationals' lineup again on Thursday versus the Diamondbacks.

Murphy hasn't started a game for the Nats since September 17 because of a strained glute and that probably won't change over the final weekend of the regular season, but he is expected to be a full-go for the best-of-five NLDS next week against the Dodgers. Wilmer Difo is playing second base and batting second on Thursday afternoon against Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray.
Sep 29 - 11:00 AM

Bryce Harper (thumb) remains sidelined Thursday.

Harper injured his left thumb on an awkward slide into third base on Sunday against the Pirates and hasn't played since. His official status is still day-to-day. Michael Taylor will start in right field and bat seventh Thursday versus Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray.
