Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that a Pirates source downplayed the possibility of the team making a play for Bud Norris.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported earlier that the Diamondbacks, Orioles and Pirates were in the running for the right-hander, but he appears to be a back-burner option for Pittsburgh. It's fair to wonder whether Norris is really an upgrade to the Pirates' rotation as they would have to remove either Gerrit Cole or Charlie Morton. They could also get Wandy Rodriguez back at some point.

Kevin Kiermaier (thumb) is on track to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

It was reported previously that Kiermaier would return on Friday, but he must have talked his way into an earlier return. The outfielder will go through a workout with the Rays on Monday and then be activated the following day assuming all goes well. He's been out since mid-April with a torn ligament in his right thumb and went 7-for-17 (.412) with a triple and a double in five rehab games.

Javier Baez (elbow) could return to the Cubs' lineup Tuesday.

Baez is sitting out Monday after leaving Sunday's game following a hit by pitch on the left elbow, but he didn't need any X-rays and said he's fine. Ben Zobrist is at second base Monday.
Jun 18 - 5:01 PM

Clayton Kershaw (back) said after getting through a three-inning simulated game Monday that he expects to pitch in a game in five days.

Kershaw wouldn't say if that game would be a start in New York against the Mets, but he didn't seem to rule it out, either. The veteran left-hander has made just one start for the Dodgers since May 1, but he has rejoined their rotation without a rehab start before in the past. We'll know more about his status in the coming days.

Tom Murphy is starting at catcher and batting eighth for the Rockies on Monday.

Murphy has started six of seven games since being recalled, including five at catcher. Chris Iannetta and Tony Wolters haven't provided much at the plate on an offense that's struggled, and it appears the Rockies are willing to give Murphy -- who has the best offensive ceiling of the trio -- a long look. Murphy is hitting .300/.333/.400 over his first five games with the big club after slugging 16 homers over 48 games at Triple-A. He needs to be owned in fantasy leagues.

All tests on Carlos Carrasco's injured right elbow came back negative.

Carrasco had to leave Saturday's start against the Twins after he was drilled by a comebacker, but he has avoided a serious injury. He was placed on the disabled list Sunday and will be re-evaluated Wednesday following a few days of treatment. There would seem to be a pretty good chance he could return before the end of the month, but the stiffness and soreness in his elbow will have to go away.
Jun 18 - 4:39 PM

Whit Merrifield (knee) is in the Royals' lineup Monday.

Merrifield exited Sunday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee, but he escaped with merely a bruise. He is in the designated hitter spot Monday, as Adalberto Mondesi is at second base.
Jun 18 - 4:32 PM

Kris Bryant will hit leadoff Monday against the Dodgers.

It will be his third start out of the leadoff spot this season, all three of them coming in the past two weeks. Ben Zobrist hit leadoff on Sunday, but he's in the No. 3 spot Monday.

Major League Baseball has extended the administrative leave for Roberto Osuna for another week through June 25.

It's a paper move with Osuna's legal situation looming. The Blue Jays' closer was arrested May 8 for allegedly assaulting a woman and won't have his next court date until July 9. His lawyer, Domenic Basile, said Monday that his client intends to plead not guilty. It could be a while under there's a resolution here.

The Astros have promoted general manager Jeff Luhnow while extending his contract through 2023.

Luhnow originally joined the Astros as general manager in December of 2011, but his new title will be president of baseball operations and general manager. He's deserving of the promotion and new deal coming off a World Series championship. The club is currently 1.5 games ahead of the Mariners in the AL West with a 48-25 record.

Phillies optioned RHP Hector Neris to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Neris gave up four runs (including two homers) during his most recent appearance on Sunday and has allowed nine runs on 15 hits (including five homers) over his last eight innings of work dating back to late May. The Phillies will try to get their former closer back on track against some lesser competition. Seranthony Dominguez would appear to be the favorite for saves in Philadelphia's bullpen, though the situation is not defined.
Jun 18 - 3:17 PM

Brett Gardner said that while he's "encouraged" by how his right knee feels, he's going to sit out the second game against the Nationals on Monday.

Gardner missed Sunday's game due to right knee soreness and can be considered day-to-day. The Yankees have reportedly called up Clint Frazier to provide some depth as the 26th man, though the club has yet to make an official announcement.
