The Pirates are promoting prospect right-hander Jameson Taillon to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Taillon, the No. 2 overall pick in 2010, earned the promotion after posting a 3.67 ERA and 106/36 K/BB ratio over 110 1/3 innings in 19 starts and one relief appearance this season with Double-A Altoona. There's an outside chance the Pirates could bring him up in September, but he'll likely follow a similar to Gerrit Cole and come up next June.

Shane Victorino (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Victorino was originally scheduled to begin his rehab assignment earlier, but inclement weather got in the way. The plan calls for him to play Saturday before getting the day off. He'll then play back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday, setting up a return on Thursday. The veteran outfielder was forced to begin the year on the DL with a hamstring strain.

Royals placed OF Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain.

It's not a big surprise, as Cain left Wednesday's game against the Astros with a Grade 1 groin strain. He's hoping to return in two weeks, but won't rush things. Jarrod Dyson should see and uptick in playing time during his absence and is worth picking up for fantasy owners who need speed.
Apr 17 - 5:35 PM

Manny Machado (knee) ran the bases again Thursday.

Machado ran the bases for the first time Wednesday, so it's a good sign that he was right back out there. The plan calls for him to slide for the first time Friday and play in an extended spring training game on Saturday. He's beginning to make encouraging progress.
Apr 17 - 5:17 PM

Mike Napoli (finger) is back in the starting lineup Thursday against the White Sox.

Napoli suffered a dislocated left ring finger Tuesday after jamming his hand against the second base bag on a head-first slide, but he managed to avoid a more serious injury. He'll bat cleanup Thursday against Chris Sale.
Apr 17 - 4:44 PM

Jose Abreu will get the day off Thursday against the Red Sox.

Abreu is currently in a 1-for-20 stretch, so it's not a bad time to give him a breather. Paul Konerko will make the start at first base.
Apr 17 - 4:41 PM

Doug Fister (lat) threw two innings Thursday in an extended spring training game.

Fister threw a total of 28 pitches. He's expected to three innings next time out before going on a minor league rehab assignment. Barring any setbacks, the hope is that he'll join Washington's rotation in about 20 days.
Apr 17 - 4:25 PM

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that the Mets attended a throwing session for Joel Hanrahan (elbow) on Thursday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported last week that the Yankees, Royals, Athletics, Red Sox, and Dodgers were among the other teams expected to be in attendance. Hanrahan is working his way back from Tommy John and flexor tendon surgeries and should be ready to contribute in the majors soon. The Mets might make sense for him, as he could get some save chances with Bobby Parnell (Tommy John surgery) out for the year and Jose Valverde appearing quite vulnerable.
Apr 17 - 4:17 PM

Brett Anderson underwent successful surgery Thursday on his fractured left index finger.

Anderson had four pins inserted into the broken finger to stabilize it and allow for proper healing. The left-hander has already been placed on the disabled list and is expected to be out for the next 4-6 weeks.
Apr 17 - 3:28 PM

Bryce Harper (quad) is back in the Nationals' starting lineup Thursday night against the Cardinals.

Harper sat out Wednesday with tightness in his left quad. It obviously wasn't a serious issue. He'll hit second and playing left field against Adam Wainwright.
Apr 17 - 3:13 PM

Angel Pagan is out of the Giants' starting lineup on Thursday because of minor knee soreness.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reports that Pagan is "playable" but that he wanted to practice caution here in mid-April. Pagan should return to action Friday.
Apr 17 - 3:06 PM

Chase Headley (biceps) is out of the Padres' starting lineup again on Thursday versus the Rockies.

Headley is considered day-to-day with a right biceps strain. Alexi Amarista is playing third base.
