Madison Bumgarner notched his 11th victory Friday by tossing seven innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 win over the Rays.

Bumgarner matched a season-high with 11 strikeouts in the victory. The southpaw scattered seven hits while issuing three walks. He has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in nine straight starts and has gone at least seven innings in all of them. He'll bring a 2.69 ERA into a start against the Brewers next week at home.

Adam Wainwright revealed Wednesday that he's been going through a "dead arm" phase.

Wainwright lost again Wednesday versus the Pirates and finished with a 5.17 ERA in six August outings. He entered the month with a 1.92 mark. The good news is that the tall right-hander thinks he's just about over the hump, saying he's "ready for September." The Cardinals could certainly use the first-half version of their ace in the final month.

Ike Davis launched his second home run in as many days in Wednesday's victory over the Cardinals.

After belting a go-ahead, pinch-hit, three-run homer Tuesday, Davis got the start Wednesday and deposited an Adam Wainwright mistake well over the right-center field wall for a two-run shot in the second inning. The two runs wound up being all Jeff Locke and the Pirates' bullpen needed. Davis figures to see regular time against righties at first base if Pedro Alvarez (foot) is out a while.

Yankees signed OF Chris Young to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Young was cut loose by the Mets earlier this month after batting just .205/.283/.346 with eight homers and 28 RBI over 254 at-bats. He's bottomed out offensively and is no longer great defensively, but at the league minimum Young is worth a shot. He figures to join the big league roster next month.
Aug 27 - 3:40 PM

David Wright (neck) remained out of the Mets' lineup Wednesday.

Wright is nursing some neck spasms and has also admitted that his left shoulder is still an issue. He's remains day-to-day for now. Eric Campbell is handling third base again Wednesday.
Aug 27 - 3:13 PM

David Ortiz is back in the Red Sox' lineup Wednesday.

Ortiz missed the previous two contests after fouling a ball off his right foot on Sunday, but he's obviously feeling better. Big Papi is hitting .265/.362/.524 with 30 homers and 93 RBI for the Red Sox this season.
Aug 27 - 3:07 PM

Adam LaRoche is back in the Nationals' lineup Wednesday.

LaRoche sat out Tuesday due to back soreness, but he's apparently feeling much better and is ready to give it a go. The Nationals' first baseman is sporting a .266/.372/.454 batting line with 19 homers and 69 RBI this season.
Aug 27 - 3:02 PM

Cubs recalled OF Jorge Soler from Triple-A Iowa.

Soler is in right field and batting fifth in his major league debut Wednesday in Cincinnati. The Cuban defector missed time with a hamstring injury this season but has batted .340/.432/.700 with 15 homers and 57 RBI over 62 games when healthy. The 22-year-old figures to be the everyday right fielder down the stretch with the Cubbies and is worth a shot in all fantasy leagues.
Aug 27 - 2:26 PM

Anthony Rizzo (back) is not in the Cubs' lineup Wednesday.

Rizzo exited Tuesday's game due to lower back tightness. It's not considered a big deal, but the Cubs want to be safe. Rizzo should be back in there in a day or two. Chris Valaika is playing first base Wednesday.
Aug 27 - 2:20 PM

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny on Wednesday wouldn't rule out the possibility of Yadier Molina (thumb) being activated from the disabled list Friday.

It goes along with previous report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold, who said a return over the weekend was possible. Molina will catch five innings Wednesday in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield. It's not clear whether he might need additional rehab games, but the Cards would seem likely to have him catch a full game before being activated. Molina has been sidelined since July 10 with a torn ligament in his right thumb.
Aug 27 - 11:40 AM

Andrew McCutchen is back in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.

McCutchen exited Tuesday's contest after aggravating his rib fracture when he slammed into the outfield wall, but his removal was precautionary and he's back out there the next day. The reigning National League MVP has just seven hits in 28 at-bats since returning from the disabled list, but three of them have left the yard.
Aug 27 - 11:13 AM

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday that "it will be more like June" before Patrick Corbin (elbow) rejoins the rotation.

Corbin had Tommy John surgery in March, so projecting a June return is certainly conservative but also probably wise. "I think with Patrick it will be more like June for him," Gibson said. "He'd probably punch me if heard me saying that but you're really going to take your time and make sure he's ready to go. You're not going to expect him to come back and throw 220 innings. You kind of manage his rehab through innings and put him in a position to finish strong. … We're going to make sure we err on the side of very cautious." In addition to Corbin, the D'Backs also have David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds, Daniel Hudson and Bronson Arroyo working their way back from Tommy John surgery, though Hudson and Reynolds could be back late this season.
