Alberto Callaspo left Wednesday's game with a left forearm contusion.

Callaspo suffered the injury on a collision at home plate in the fourth inning. It's probably safe to call him day-to-day for now.

Andy Martino of the New York Daily News hears from "people involved in the process" that the Phillies are "strong contenders" for Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas.

The Phillies appear to have strong interest in Tomas, as general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. flew to the Dominican Republic to personally scout Tomas. While the Padres and Dodgers have been mentioned as possibilities, Martino hears that they are "far less likely" as potential landing spots. The Tigers have also been added to the list of potential suitors, which includes the Twins, Giants, and Rangers, among others. The Mets and Yankees are not expected to be players for the 23-year-old outfielder, who could end up with a $100 million contract.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. indicated Tuesday that he expects A.J. Burnett to return next season.

Burnett has a $12.75 million player option for 2015 and has five days after the World Series to decide whether to accept or decline. The 37-year-old has hinted at retirement and hasn't made an official decision on his future, but Amaro believes that he'll be back. "I’m really kind of neutral on it," said Amaro. "I knew what it took to get him back and pitching this year. I would assume that he’d want to pitch again. I don’t have that information, but my inclination is that he’s going to want to pitch. He’s a competitive guy." Burnett posted a 4.59 ERA and 190/96 K/BB ratio over 213 2/3 innings this season.

Madison Bumgarner was a beast again Tuesday, holding the Royals to one run over seven excellent frames in a 7-1 World Series Game 1 victory.

He struck out five, walked one and allowed just three hits, with Salvador Perez’s solo homer in the seventh inning representing the only blemish on his record. The Royals were only able to muster one rally versus Bumgarner, and that was in the third inning after Brandon Crawford booted a ball to start the frame. MadBum wound up pitching out of that inning with a couple strikeouts and a groundout. Perez’s homer is the only run Bumgarner has allowed in the World Series in 22 career innings. He’ll get the ball again in Game 5, assuming the series lasts that long.

James Shields lasted just three-plus innings Tuesday against the Giants, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk in the World Series Game 1 loss.

The Giants jumped on Shields early with two singles and an RBI double after the first four hitters of the game. Shields caught a break when Buster Posey was easily thrown out at home on a silly send from third base coach Tim Flannery, but the next batter, Hunter Pence, smashed a two-run shot over the center field wall. Pence also scored in the fourth after a leadoff double on a Michael Morse single that chased Shields. The Royals’ ace now has a 7.11 ERA over four starts this postseason. Despite Shields' struggles, Royals manager Ned Yost said after the game that the righty would get the ball in a potential Game 5.

Hunter Pence launched a two-run homer and reached base four times in Tuesday's World Series Game 1 win over the Royals.

The Giants first dented the scoreboard on Pablo Sandoval's first-inning double, but Pence provided the big blow with a laser to center field that cleared the wall for a two-run shot. He later added a double and also drew a pair of walks. Every player in the Giants' lineup had a hit save for Travis Ishikawa, who was lifted after just one at-bat.

LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins have three finalists for their manager job in Paul Molitor, Doug Mientkiewicz and Torey Lovullo.

That means Gene Glynn, Sandy Alomar Jr., Joe McEwing and DeMarlo Hale have been eliminated. The feeling all along has been that Molitor is the favorite for the job, and there's been no indication that that's changed. Lovullo, who is the Red Sox' bench coach, is the lone finalist from outside the organization.

Phillies re-signed RHP Jerome Williams to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

The deal includes performance-based bonuses that could carry the total value up to $4 million. Williams was a nice surprise down the stretch this year for Philadelphia, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 38/17 K/BB ratio in 57 1/3 innings (nine starts), but expecting him to replicate that success over a full season is probably foolish. The 32-year-old right-hander owns a 4.40 career ERA and a 1.36 career WHIP.

Jason Vargas will start in Game 4 of the World Series against the Giants on Saturday.

Jeremy Guthrie will get the nod for Game 3. Vargas has allowed three runs with an 8/4 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings over two starts this postseason. He'll face Ryan Vogelsong.
Oct 21 - 3:59 PM

Jeremy Guthrie will start Game 3 of the World Series against the Giants on Friday.

He'll square off against Tim Hudson in San Francisco. Guthrie allowed one run over five innings in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Orioles last Tuesday. Jason Vargas will follow him in Game 4. Guthrie is now lined up for a potential Game 7.
Oct 21 - 3:52 PM

Michael Morse is in the starting lineup as the designated hitter for Game 1 of the World Series against the Royals.

Morse was limited to pitch-hitting duties during the NLCS, but the Giants can use him as their DH under American League rules. The full lineup: Gregor Blanco CF, Joe Panik 2B, Buster Posey C, Pablo Sandoval 3B, Hunter Pence RF, Brandon Belt 1B, Morse DH, Travis Ishikawa LF, Brandon Crawford SS. Madison Bumgarner will match up against James Shields.
Oct 21 - 3:28 PM

Lorenzo Cain will bat third in Game 1 of the World Series against the Giants on Tuesday night.

Royals manager Ned Yost is sticking with what got him here. The full lineup: Alcides Escobar SS, Nori Aoki RF, Cain CF, Eric Hosmer 1B, Butler DH, Alex Gordon LF, Salvador Perez C, Omar Infante 2B, Mike Moustakas 3B. James Shields will oppose Madison Bumgarner.
