Robbie Erlin needs Tommy John surgery.

Erlin was placed on the disabled list on April 21 with discomfort in his left elbow and further testing revealed a partial UCL tear. He's going to miss the rest of the 2016 season and the early part of 2017. Erlin, a 25-year-old former top prospect, holds a 4.54 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 109/35 K/BB ratio in 148 2/3 career major league frames.

Mariners placed RHP Tony Zych on the 15-day disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Zych was rocking a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts through 12 innings this season out of the Mariners' bullpen, and he boasts a 2.67 ERA in 30 1/3 career major league frames. It's not clear when the 25-year-old right-hander might be able to pitch again. Steve Johnson got the callup from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday to provide relief depth.
May 3 - 6:17 PM

Joe Kelly (shoulder) is expected to make a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Kelly will make at least two starts in the minors before the Red Sox consider bringing him back. The right-hander owns a brutal 9.35 ERA and 2.77 WHIP in three outings this season for Boston and landed on the disabled list April 19 with a shoulder impingement. He's not worth stashing in a standard fantasy league.
May 3 - 6:05 PM

Ervin Santana (back) is on track to return from the disabled list Saturday versus the White Sox.

Santana made it through a 30-pitch simulated game Tuesday without issue. The right-hander has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 26 because of a lower back strain. He had a 3.15 ERA and 18 strikeouts over his first 20 innings spanning four starts.
May 3 - 5:38 PM

Avisail Garcia (hamstring) is aiming to return to the White Sox starting lineup Wednesday.

Garcia tweaked his hamstring last Friday night and will take another day of rest Tuesday against the Red Sox. Jerry Sands is starting at DH and batting seventh.
May 3 - 5:02 PM

Mike Moustakas is absent from the Royals' lineup Tuesday because of a bruised thumb.

May 3 - 4:56 PM

Ender Inciarte (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Gwinnett.

And he could be back on the Braves' active roster by the weekend if everything goes smoothly. Inciarte has been on the shelf since April 9 with a hamstring strain. Mallex Smith has been serving as Atlanta's primary center fielder and currently holds a rough .218/.295/.327 slash line over his first 18 major league games.
May 3 - 4:44 PM

Jean Segura is out of the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Tuesday due to a hip issue.

It's not considered serious and Segura is hoping to return Wednesday. Phil Gosselin is at second base and Nick Ahmed is at shortstop Tuesday versus the Marlins.
May 3 - 4:29 PM

White Sox designated LHP John Danks for assignment.

Danks allowed six earned runs over five innings against the Orioles last Thursday, watching his season ERA rise to 7.25. He's in the final year of five-year, $65 million deal and will likely pass through waivers unclaimed because of the sum he's still owed. Erik Johnson will take over the vacant spot in Chicago's starting rotation.
May 3 - 4:22 PM

Pablo Sandoval underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Just as many national media members had been reporting. Sandoval appeared in only three games this season for the Red Sox after showing up to camp out of shape and losing his starting third base job to Travis Shaw. He is still owed $58 million guaranteed.
May 3 - 4:16 PM

Carlos Gomez (ribs) is back in the Astros' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Twins.

Gomez missed three straight games because of some mild soreness in his right rib cage. The dynamic 30-year-old will start in center field and bat seventh in his return to action Tuesday versus Twins righty Alex Meyer.
