Athletics recalled LHP Tommy Milone from Triple-A Sacramento.

Milone was promoted to replace Bartolo Colon in the A's rotation and will start Sunday against the Indians. Milone is 9-9 with a 4.39 ERA through 22 starts this year.

Mike Minor (shoulder) won't pitch again this season.

Minor lasted just one inning on Saturday before experiencing shoulder discomfort and the Braves don't want to risk making it any worse. An MRI was taken and showed no structural damage. David Hale is going to make a spot start for Atlanta on Thursday against the Pirates. Minor will look forward to a bounceback 2015 after posting a rough 4.77 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 25 starts this year.
Sep 23 - 4:23 PM

Dilson Herrera (quad) is unlikely to return before the end of the 2014 regular season.

Herrera suffered a quad strain on Saturday against the Braves and an injury like that usually takes at least two weeks to heal. The 20-year-old second baseman hit .220/.303/.407 with three home runs and 11 RBI in his first 18 major league games.
Sep 23 - 4:11 PM

Juan Lagares (elbow) is done for the season.

Lagares doesn't need surgery for his right elbow sprain, but his rehab for the injury will last into October. The young center fielder batted .281/.321/.382 with four home runs and 13 stolen bases in 116 games this season while playing elite-level defense.
Sep 23 - 4:08 PM

The Mets confirmed Tuesday that Terry Collins will return as manager of the Mets in 2015.

Meanwhile, the Mets officially announced that general manager Sandy Alderson will receive a contract extension through 2017. Collins has yet to have a winning season during his tenure in New York, but he has done a respectable job with the talent afforded to him and deserves an opportunity to manage a team seemingly on the verge of contention.
Sep 23 - 3:22 PM

Jason Heyward (thumb) is back in the Braves' starting lineup Tuesday against the Pirates.

Heyward hasn't played since he was hit in the left thumb by a pitch last Wednesday, but he's ready to give it a go. He'll bat fifth against Bucs starter Gerrit Cole.
Sep 23 - 3:12 PM

Adam Eaton is back in the White Sox starting lineup on Tuesday against the Tigers.

Eaton was away from the team Monday for personal reasons. The 25-year-old outfielder is batting .298/.361/.397 over 117 games this season.
Sep 23 - 3:09 PM

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets will shut down Jacob deGrom.

DeGrom had been lined up to face the Astros on Saturday at Citi Field, but he has already thrown 178 2/3 innings this season between the majors and the minors, a jump of 31 innings from his 2013 total. The Mets are content with cutting him off here. While he had little fanfare coming into the year, deGrom will finish 2014 with a 2.63 ERA over 22 starts. He has a very strong case for the National League Rookie of the Year award.
Sep 23 - 1:57 PM

Adam Wainwright shut out the Cubs for seven innings Monday to become the year's second 20-game winner.

Wainwright joined Clayton Kershaw at 20 wins. The only other pitcher with a shot of getting there would seem to be Johnny Cueto, who has 18 wins with two starts left. Madison Bumgarner also has 18 wins and could have two starts left, but it's more likely that he'll be held back for the wild card game than it is that he'll start Sunday. It's Wainwright's second career 20-win season, the other coming in 2010. He's won each of his last five starts, and his ERA is back down to 2.38.
Sep 22 - 11:18 PM

Michael Pineda pitched 7 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in the Yankees' 5-0 victory over the Orioles on Monday.

Pineda's incredibly strong return from his shoulder/back injury is the best thing that's happened to the Yankees all year. He struck out eight and walked just one tonight before coming out after 106 pitches. Shawn Kelley, Rich Hill and David Phelps finished the one-hitter. Pineda has a 1.93 ERA and a 49/7 K/BB ratio in 70 innings.
Sep 22 - 10:23 PM

Josh Hamilton (shoulder) will not play until this weekend, at the earliest.

Hamilton had been hoping to return as soon as Wednesday,' but Angels manager Mike Scioscia has ruled that out. The outfielder did hit off a tee Monday and Scioscia said Hamilton is doing "pretty good." Fantasy owners don't need to be counting on him playing at all this week.
Sep 22 - 8:28 PM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Monday that the chances of Matt Shoemaker (oblique) pitching this week are "very remote."

The good news is that Shoemaker played catch Monday and Scioscia said he's "very encouraged" about the right-hander's chances of being ready for the postseason. The Angels would obviously prefer the rookie right-hander getting a tune-up before the playoffs, but obviously the main goal is to have him available for postseason play, and it sounds like they will.
