Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that "there is concern" that Rafael Betancourt tore his elbow ligament during an appearance Thursday.

He'll undergo an MRI on Monday, but it sounds like Tommy John surgery could be in the veteran reliever's future. The Rockies will obviously decline their side of the $4.25 million mutual option for 2014 on Betancourt. He will turn 39 just after Opening Day next year, so it could potentially be a career-ending injury. Rex Brother will take over as the Rockies' closer.

Luis Valbuena (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Inland Empire on Monday.

Working his way back from a right hamstring strain, Valbuena slated to play 5-7 games before being activated from the disabled list. With C.J. Cron struggling, Valbuena should play regularly against righties once he returns.

Mariners recalled 1B Daniel Vogelbach from Triple-A Tacoma.

Vogelbach should immediately become a regular at first base against right-handers given Danny Valencia's struggles. The rotund first baseman struggled in his brief audition with the Mariners last season and also in spring training, but he was off to a .309/.409/.473 start at Tacoma and has offered power and good plate discipline consistently in the minors. He's worth a look in deeper fantasy formats.
Apr 23 - 1:19 PM

Mariners designated OF Leonys Martin for assignment.

Martin was off to a brutal .111/.172/.130 start this season, but it's a surprise that the Mariners are cutting him loose given his plus defense and ability to steal bases and offer a little pop when he's right. He could clear waivers given his $4.85 million salary, but Martin won't be out of a job long. The Tigers are an obvious fit. Jarrod Dyson will slide over to handle center field now, with the Mariners likely going with a combination of Guillermo Heredia, Taylor Motter and Danny Valencia in left.
Apr 23 - 1:11 PM

X-rays on Denard Span's right shoulder came back negative.

Span injured the shoulder when he collided with the outfield wall on Saturday. While it appears he's avoided a serious injury, he's sitting out Sunday and could potentially miss more time. Gorkys Hernandez is in center field in his place.
Apr 23 - 1:00 PM

Salvador Perez (neck) remained out of the Royals' lineup Sunday.

He hasn't caught since Thursday and has now missed two straight starts due to a sore neck. Drew Butera will catch again. The Royals are also giving Lorenzo Cain his first day off of the season, as Jorge Bonifacio is in center field.
Apr 23 - 12:06 PM

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Sunday that J.D. Martinez (foot) is on track to be activated from the disabled list in late April or early May.

Martinez ran outside on Friday at 40-60 percent effort and his ailing right foot felt better than expected the day after. He'll do more running Monday and doesn't appear to be far off from a rehab assignment. Martinez is making his way back from a sprained Lisfranc ligament.
Apr 23 - 11:45 AM

David Price (elbow) will throw a 45-50 pitch bullpen session on Monday.

It will come after he had a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday where he threw his curveball. Assuming Monday's session goes well, the Red Sox will then map out a rehab assignment plan for Price. That doesn't necessarily mean the next time he throws will be in game action, but at least we should have a clearer picture on a potential timetable.
Apr 23 - 11:25 AM

Dustin Pedroia will undergo an MRI on his left knee and ankle on Monday in Boston.

The swelling and soreness in Pedroia's knee and ankle hasn't gone down as expected, so the Red Sox have decided to send him for additional testing. Pedroia was injured on Friday when he was spiked by the Orioles' Manny Machado on a play at second base.
Apr 23 - 11:19 AM

George Springer (hamstring) might only miss one game.

Springer lobbied to play Sunday after exiting Saturday's contest with a tight left hamstring. It didn't work, as Jake Marisnick is starting in center field in his place, but it sounds like Springer could be back in there on Tuesday after Monday's off day.
Apr 23 - 11:13 AM

Dexter Fowler (heel) is back in the Cardinals' lineup Sunday.

Fowler was pulled from Friday's game and sat out Saturday with a bruised heel, but he's returned to the leadoff spot Sunday. The Cards are resting Yadier Molina, as Eric Fryer will catch Mike Leake.
Apr 23 - 10:58 AM

Ben Zobrist (back) is back in the Cubs' lineup Sunday.

Zobrist missed a couple games with a sore back, but he'll play second base and bat cleanup Sunday. Willson Contreras is sitting out even after going 3-for-4 with a grand slam Saturday, as Miguel Montero will do the catching.
