Pirates acquired OF Marlon Byrd, C John Buck and cash considerations from the Mets for INF Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com was first to report the full details of the trade. Byrd is a solid fit for Pittsburgh, as he'll provide some thump out of right field. The 35-year-old has enjoyed a resurgent campaign in 2013, batting .285/.330/.518 with 21 home runs and 71 RBI in 117 games. He'll be a free agent after the season. The trade is bad news for Jose Tabata, though he figures to play left field until Starling Marte (finger) makes it back from the disabled list.

Carlos Gomez (ribs) did some baseball activity on Monday.

It's good news for Gomez, who will miss his third straight game Monday with soreness in his left rib cage. Astros manager A.J. Hinch is optimistic that he'll be able to return during the team's series against the Twins this week.
May 2 - 5:37 PM

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said that Jason Heyward is out of Monday's lineup with a sore right wrist.

There's no indication that it's serious, but it provides more context on his struggles. The high-priced outfielder went 0-for-17 on the team's recent homestand and is batting just .211/.317/.256 overall.
May 2 - 5:28 PM

Lance McCullers (shoulder) threw 62 pitches over 4 2/3 innings Monday in an extended spring training game.

McCullers will still have to make it through a bullpen session, but the expectation is that he'll resume a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday. It's unclear how many starts he'll need before joining the Astros. His rehab from shoulder discomfort already had to be put on hold once.
May 2 - 5:23 PM

Mike Moustakas is not in Monday's lineup against the Nationals.

He's just getting the day off. Christian Colon will cover third base and bat eighth versus left-hander Gio Gonzalez.
May 2 - 4:58 PM

Ervin Santana (back) is scheduled to throw 30 pitches in a simulated game on Tuesday.

Santana landed on the disabled list late last month with a lower back strain, but he made it through a bullpen session on Sunday with no issues. If all goes well on Tuesday, the plan calls for him to be activated this Saturday versus the White Sox.
May 2 - 4:53 PM

Ender Inciarte (hamstring) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment in the next day or two.

Inciarte, who injured his left hamstring last month, ramped up his running last week and appears ready for game action. If all goes according to plan, he could rejoin the Braves this weekend.
May 2 - 4:34 PM

Devin Mesoraco had an MRI on his ailing left shoulder.

Mesoraco has now missed four straight starts. That he needed an MRI isn't exactly the best sign. It appears that a trip to the disabled list is very possible.
May 2 - 4:22 PM

Zack Cozart (knee) is not expected to miss much time.

Cozart gave the Reds a bit of a scare when he was forced to exit Sunday's game against the Pirates with an injury to his surgically-repaired right knee, but he's merely dealing with some tendinitis and should be fine. He could play on Monday, but the Reds are understandably being cautious with him. Consider him day-to-day.
May 2 - 4:11 PM

Homer Bailey (elbow) said Monday that he expects to be shut down for 5-7 days.

Bailey got roughed up in his most recent minor league rehab start last Tuesday and it was revealed on Sunday that he suffered a slight setback. It's not believed to be serious, so the Reds are hoping that a few days of rest will get him back on track. Bailey was previously expected to rejoin the Reds by mid-May, but his timetable is up in the air right now.
May 2 - 4:03 PM

Braves optioned INF Jace Peterson to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Peterson was batting .182/.260/.205 in 50 plate appearances this season at the major league level. The former supplemental first-round draft pick has posted good numbers in the minors, but it just hasn't translated.
May 2 - 3:55 PM

Yu Darvish (elbow) will make his next rehab start Friday with Triple-A Round Rock.

He'll go three innings, or around 45 pitches. Darvish was excellent in his rehab debut this weekend with Double-A Frisco, striking out two batters over two hitless innings. He's on track to join the Rangers' starting rotation around the end of May. The ace right-hander is 14 months removed from Tommy John surgery.
