Alex Wood held the Indians scoreless over 5 2/3 innings as the Braves beat the Indians 2-0 on Tuesday.

Wood continued his phenomenal string of starts, rattling off his fifth straight start of allowing one run or fewer. He worked around five hits and four walks, striking out five in the outing. Wood moved to 3-2 with a 2.27 ERA in 63 1/3 innings this season, and he's got a cushy matchup on deck as he squares off with the Marlins on Sunday.

Pirates acquired 1B Ike Davis from the Mets in exchange for RHP Zachary Thornton and a player to be named.

The 27-year-old slugger has fallen off after a breakthrough 2012 campaign where he smashed 32 homers and drove home 90 runs. The change of scenery, and the likelihood that he receives everyday at-bats, should be a tremendous boost to his fantasy value affords him the chance to get his career back on track.

Manny Machado (knee) will play five innings at third base in an extended spring training game Saturday.

Machado was cleared after doing some sliding on Friday with no issues. It will be the third baseman's first game action since last October's knee surgery. The Orioles have been careful not to make any hard and fast deadlines for Machado, but it's beginning to look like he should be ready to go pretty early on in May.

Athletics signed LHP Sean Doolittle to a four-year contract extension.

The deal was announced as a five-year contract, but it includes this season. The A's will also have club options for 2019 and 2020. The financials of the contract are not yet known. Doolittle would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter, so the new deal will buy out his arbitration years and possibly his first two years of free agency. Doolittle holds a 3.10 ERA with 129 strikeouts over 125 innings over his first 122 relief appearances for the A's.
Apr 18 - 4:49 PM

Rangers placed RHP Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list with muscle inflammation in his right elbow.

The club is saying Scheppers' ligament is fine, as it's a muscular injury. That's obviously preferred, but it's not clear how long he might be sidelined. Nick Martinez is expected to be recalled to start on Tuesday in Scheppers' place.

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Friday that Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will "probably" begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday at Triple-A Tacoma.

Iwakuma had a successful simulated game Friday and will throw one more bullpen session Sunday before beginning a rehab assignment. It's not clear at this point how many rehab starts the right-hander will need, but his early May timetable still appears to be a realistic goal.
Apr 18 - 3:59 PM

Brandon Phillips was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs due to back spasms.

Phillips was injured on a swing in the first inning and eventually was taken out in the third. The Reds are saying his removal was precautionary. Consider Phillips day-to-day for the time being, but he figures to miss at least a game or two.
Apr 18 - 3:52 PM

Red Sox designated INF Ryan Roberts for assignment.

That didn't take long. Roberts was brought in on a one-year deal a week and a half ago but has been given the boot after picked up just two singles in 19 at-bats. Jonathan Herrera and Brock Holt will handle third base until Will Middlebrooks (calf) returns.
Apr 18 - 3:43 PM

Aroldis Chapman (head) has been cleared to throw live batting practice.

Reds manager Bryan Price said Wednesday that Chapman could be cleared before the end of the team's road trip, and it turns out he's been cleared on the first day of their 10-day trip. It seems like the reliever might be a tad ahead of schedule, but the Reds haven't said as much, only offering that Chapman is coming along well. A mid-May return has been expected.
Apr 18 - 12:16 PM

Cole Hamels (biceps) tossed seven innings of one-run ball Thursday for High-A Clearwater in what is expected to be his final rehab start.

Hamels gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out two. The left-hander has posted a 2.12 ERA and 12/1 K/BB ratio over his 17 rehab innings to this point, clearing the way for him to rejoin the Phillies' rotation early next week. Assuming the club keeps Hamels on schedule, he'll make his season debut on Tuesday versus the Dodgers.
Apr 18 - 10:19 AM

Sergio Santos completely lost the strike zone after taking over in the eighth inning on Thursday, walking all three Twins he faced and taking his first blown save.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jays had already run through all of their decent bullpen options when Santos imploded. As a result, J.A. Happ was brought in to try to stop the bleeding, yet he only made it worse, walking three batters of his own in what ended up being a six-run inning. Santos, for his part, never walked in a run. Instead, he threw three run-scoring wild pitches, which is a pretty amazing feat. Just four of his 16 pitches were strikes. Santos entered the game 4-for-4 in save chances and with three walks on the season, none in his last three appearances. Hopefully, this was just one big fluke. If not, then the Blue Jays will be forced to go to Steve Delabar and Aaron Loup in save chances.
Apr 17 - 11:24 PM

Adam Wainwright was on his game Thursday, striking out eight in an 8-0 two-hit shutout of the Nationals.

Waino walked three, but the only hit he allowed before a sharp single from Adam LaRoche with two outs in the ninth was a high chopper off the plate by Ian Desmond in the second inning. He retired 18 batters in a row at one point. While Wainwright has issued an uncharacteristic nine free passes over his first four outings, he also boasts a 1.80 ERA with 32 strikeouts across 30 frames. The tall right-hander will square off against the Mets and Pirates next week.
