Angels acquired 1B/OF Rusty Ryal from the Dodgers in exchange for cash.

The 30-year-old hasn't played in the Major Leagues since 2010 where he appeared in 104 games with the Diamondbacks. He hit .265/.310/.359 with four homers and 49 RBI in 106 games with Triple-A Albuquerque this season.

Padres non-tendered RHP Tyson Ross.

The 29-year-old right-hander made just one start before he was shut down for the season with a shoulder issue. He eventually required surgery in October for thoracic outlet syndrome which puts his status in question for the start of the 2017 season. Still, it's a bit of a surprising move after Ross pitched to a 3.16 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 9.2 K/9 over 522 innings since joining the club in 2013. He'll be an interesting commodity on the free agent market.

Albert Pujols underwent successful surgery on Friday to release his right plantar fascia.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina. The typical recovery time for this surgery is estimated at four months, which will impact his availability early in spring training as well as his regular off-season routine. This news should push Pujols down a couple of rounds in early fantasy drafts.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Diamondbacks have agreed to a contract with free agent backstop Jeff Mathis.

Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports was first to report that the two sides had been in discussions, and now Heyman reports that they have reached a deal. The Diamondbacks now have three catchers on the roster, with Mathis joining Chris Herrmann and Oscar Hernandez.
Dec 2 - 7:36 PM

Diamondbacks non-tendered C Welington Castillo.

This move comes as quite a surprise, as Castillo was the club's starting catcher and coming off of a fine offensive season where he slashed .264/.322/.423 with 14 homers and 68 RBI in 457 plate appearances. Chris Herrmann now ascends to the top of the depth chart, but it's incredibly likely that the D'Backs will now add another backstop either through trade or free agency. As for Castillo, he was projected to earn around $6 million in arbitration, but now suddenly becomes one of the most appealing catchers on the free agent market.
Dec 2 - 7:16 PM

White Sox and INF Brett Lawrie avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.

Lawrie will see a massive drop in salary from the $4.125 million that he made in 2016 after hitting just .248/.310/.413 with 12 homers and 36 RBI in 94 games in his first season with the White Sox. Still just 26-years-old, Lawrie is expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for the start of spring training and could represent a nice buy-low opportunity in the late rounds of fantasy drafts.
Dec 2 - 6:53 PM

Nationals non-tendered OF Ben Revere.

The move was expected, as Revere wasn't worthy of a raise in arbitration following an awful .217/.260/.300 batting line this past season. Hit hit over .300 in each of the previous three seasons, however, and will turn just 29 next May, so some team will give the speedster a shot.
Dec 2 - 5:35 PM

Nationals acquired C Derek Norris from the Padres in exchange for RHP Pedro Avila.

Norris is a former Nationals prospect who was traded to the A's a few years ago in the Gio Gonzalez deal. He's now back with the organization that drafted him, taking the place of free agent Wilson Ramos. Norris had an awful .186/.255/.328 batting line with 14 homers last season in San Diego, but he's not a bad buy-low candidate in a new environment.
Dec 2 - 5:07 PM

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that talks with Mark Melancon are "moving along."

Crasnick says that the Nationals and Giants are "still in the mix" for the closer. He adds that the Giants could be in better position to make a deal for Melancon work since the Nats are currently focused on a trade for Andrew McCutchen and possibly Chris Sale. Melancon is expected to land a contract in the four-year, $60 million range, according to Crasnick.
Dec 2 - 4:09 PM

MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports that the Tigers and Phillies have had trade talks involving J.D. Martinez "but talks are not progressing."

Morosi says that the Phillies are looking for a "short-term outfield bat," which is a little odd since they can't realistically consider themselves contenders in 2017. Perhaps they'd wind up flipping Martinez to another team in July before he reaches free agency next winter. The Tigers are looking to slash payroll, and Martinez is looking likely to be dealt.
Dec 2 - 2:12 PM

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals are considering Adam Eaton, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gomez and Ian Desmond as backup options for center field.

Heyman notes that the Nationals "remain focused" on a trade for Andrew McCutchen, but they are preparing backup plans in the event they're not able to work something out for the Pirates outfielder. Desmond is the most interesting name of the aforementioned bunch, of course, given that he's spent most of his career with the Nats. He played shortstop for them, but Washington appears intent on moving Trea Turner in to his natural position of shortstop and adding a center fielder.
Dec 2 - 12:53 PM

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Royals are getting "multiple inquiries" on Jarrod Dyson.

Dyson could be an underrated target for a team looking for a center fielder, as he's excellent defensively and is coming off a career-best .728 OPS. As Crasnick notes, however, Dyson is currently in line to serve on the strong side of a platoon in right field for the Royals, so they'd probably have to acquire another outfielder if they dealt the speedster. Dyson is 32 and is slated for free agency after next season.
