Rockies sent OF Tyler Colvin outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

He's now off the 40-man roster. Colvin hit only .160 with three home runs and 10 RBI while striking out 27 times over 75 at-bats for the Rockies this season. He'll be a non-tender candidate this winter.

Brad Ziegler coughed up a 1-0 ninth-inning lead in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Angels.

Ziegler entered in the ninth attempting to secure the win for David Price, who gave the Red Sox eight shutout innings. It was not to be. After loading the bases with one out, Ziegler surrendered an infield grounder to Daniel Nava. Enter Hanley Ramirez, who fired home in an attempt to secure the first out on what might have been a game-ending double play. That was the idea, anyway, but Ramirez sailed the throw high to allow two runners to race home. Ballgame. This was Ziegler's third blown save of the season, his first in eight appearances with the Red Sox since coming over from the Diamondbacks via trade earlier this month. He has now allowed runs in back-to-back appearances and might be in line for a breather as this four-game set with the Angels unfolds.

David Price was superb in earning a no-decision in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Angels, rolling through eight shutout frames while scattering seven singles.

Manager John Farrell is probably second-guessing himself tonight, at least just a little bit. Price had thrown 109 pitches through eight innings and could have theoretically at least started the ninth, but Farrell turned to Brad Ziegler instead. The reliever subsequently blew the save as Price lost out on what would have been a smooth 1-0 win. Tumultuous end aside, this was a strong effort from the ace southpaw. He will bring a 4.26 ERA -- plus a 1.26 WHIP and 151/31 K/BB ratio (143 2/3 innings) -- into a road date with the Mariners next time he toes the rubber.

Cole Hamels struck out 12 while allowing two runs over eight innings, leading the Rangers to a 3-2 win over the Royals on Thursday.

Hamels gave up six hits, including a solo homer, and walked one in the victory, throwing a season-high 123 pitches before exiting. It may not be any coincidence that his 12 punchouts were also a season high, giving him 132 strikeouts in 133 1/3 innings on the year. The southpaw improved to 12-2 with his third straight win, and he'll take a 2.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into Wednesday's start at the Orioles.

Mitch Moreland hit two solo home runs in Thursday's win over the Royals.

Moreland had Yordano Ventura's number this night, lifting a homer to left-center field in the fifth inning to tie the game before walloping a pitch to deep center in the eighth to give the Rangers the lead. The home runs were numbers 15 and 16 on the year for Moreland, who has started to come around a bit after a slow start to the year. The 30-year-old is batting .237/.303/.453 overall as a result of that poor start at the plate.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports the Marlins and Rangers are currently ahead in the race to acquire Andrew Cashner.

Both teams are looking to add a starter for the stretch run. Cashner is in the last year of his contract so he'd only be a rental. The Orioles have also shown interest though perhaps not as much as Texas or Miami. The Padres have turned this season into an all-out fire sale, unloading assets such as James Shields, Fernando Rodney, Drew Pomeranz and Melvin Upton. There's a good chance Cashner's start against Toronto on Tuesday was his last as a member of the Padres' organization.

Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect 1 1/3 innings Thursday, closing out the Cubs' 3-1 win over the White Sox.

The four-out save was also the first save in Chapman's Cubs career. The southpaw struck out two in the outing. He's now got 21 saves total, owning a 1.87 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 48/8 K/BB ratio over 33 2/3 innings. An elite closer on an elite team, Chapman could put up some gaudy numbers over the season's final two months.

Aaron Altherr made his 2016 debut in style Thursday, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the Phillies 7-5 win over the Braves.

After missing nearly four months due to a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, Altherr wasted no time making his presence felt Thursday. The 25-year-old singled in his first at-bat, hit a two-run home run later and added another single for good measure. The dual threat had five homers and six steals in 39 games with the Phillies last year, and now healthy, Altherr is an intriguing player in NL-only and deep mixed leagues.
Jul 28 - 11:24 PM

Max Kepler went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored to help the Twins best the Orioles 6-2 on Thursday.

Kepler pulled a solo homer over the right field wall in the sixth inning to tie the game, and he later had an RBI single and a run scored in the Twins' decisive four-run seventh inning. It has been a coming out party for the 23-year-old this year, as Kepler is hitting .243/.319/.508 with 38 RBI and 29 runs scored in 58 games.

Giants acquired SS Eduardo Nunez from the Twins in exchange for LHP Adalberto Mejia.

Nunez had drawn interest from a number of teams before this trade including the Indians. Nunez mostly played shortstop for Minnesota but he's also spent a fair amount at third base and even started a few games at second earlier this year. He'll likely begin his Giants tenure at the hot corner while Matt Duffy continues to recover from an Achilles injury. Nunez has had a career season, hitting .296 with 12 HR, 47 RBI and 26 steals. The 29-year-old should eventually settle into a super utility role for the Giants.

Aledmys Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run as the Cardinals edged the Marlins 5-4 on Thursday.

Diaz took Jose Fernandez deep for the two-run dinger in the third inning, and he added an RBI double in the fifth. The 25-year-old now has 14 home runs, 56 RBI and 64 runs scored in his rookie year. He continues to prove the naysayers wrong, batting .313/.378/.523 through 94 games.

Taiwan Walker (foot) is drawing strong trade interest, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale didn't mention which teams were interested, though he did say there will be scouts on hand for Walker's bullpen session Friday at Wrigley Field. Walker pitched a simulated game on Wednesday and is close to returning from a foot injury. He could be a good fit for the Marlins who are looking to add a controllable starting pitcher. Walker won't hit free agency until 2021.
