Mets placed LHP Scott Rice on the 60-day disabled list with a sports hernia.

It's a procedural move in order to clear room on the 40-man roster. Rice will undergo season-ending surgery this week.

Pirates activated RHP Gerrit Cole from the 15-day disabled list.

Cole will rejoin the Pirates' rotation on Wednesday against the Braves. He's made just two starts at the major league level since early June due to two different shoulder issues but pitched well in last two rehab outings to clear his way for a return. The fading Pirates could obviously use a strong outing from Cole right out of the gate.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jon Lester signing with the Red Sox this offseason is seen as a "long shot."

It's no surprise, given they failed to agree to extension terms before the trade deadline and ultimately dealt him. Boston will likely at least make a cursory effort with Lester this winter, but the left-hander returning to Boston doesn't appear to be in the cards. Heyman says that the Yankees and Cubs are "much more likely landing spots" for the 30-year-old.

Carl Crawford reached base in all four plate appearances, scored three runs and knocked in three more in Tuesday's 8-6 victory over the Padres.

He finished 3-for-3 with a walk, home run and stolen base. If owners in your league have been slumbering and Crawford remains available on the waiver wire, stop reading this update and go pick him up. Just go. In his last 12 starts, Crawford has eight multi-hit games. He is 21-for-50 (.420) with six steals since August 4. The one fantasy element we haven't seen during his hot streak is power -- no homers since May 23 coming into tonight -- so it was good to see him leave the yard. Crawford is a must-start in all formats until he cools off.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday that Zack Greinke (elbow) is a "possibility" to make his next scheduled start on Thursday.

Mattingly downplayed Greinke's sore elbow earlier in the day, but he was more reserved with his comments after Tuesday's game. The right-hander skipped his normal between-starts bullpen session due to a sore pitching elbow. Mattingly said more information on Greinke's status will be available Wednesday.

Jon Jay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Tuesday, giving the Cardinals a walk-off, 5-4 win over the Reds.

Jay has the strange distinction of leading the league with 15 hit-by-pitches this season, and none were more important than Tuesday's. The spectacle takes away from the fact that Jay also had two hits and scored twice in the victory. He owns an 11-game hitting streak that has his season line up to .307/.378/.402, and he's finding everyday at-bats in the Cardinals lineup. Mixed league owners need to start taking note.

Yan Gomes homered and finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored as the Indians came back to beat the Twins 7-5 on Tuesday.

Gomes hadn't scored since August 6 before Tuesday's three-run outburst. His solo home run in the second inning started the Indians on the comeback trail, and he came in on a two-run double in the sixth inning that gave the Tribe their first lead. The catcher is enjoying another strong year, batting .285/.325/.479 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI on the season.

James Shields limited the Rockies to two runs in six innings Wednesday in the Royals' 7-4 win.

It was only the second-ever start for Shields at Coors Field and he handled the difficult pitching conditions impressively, scattering nine hits and a walk while striking out six. The right-hander is now 12-6 with a 3.28 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 143/36 K/BB ratio in 178 1/3 innings this season for the Royals, who are 15 games above .500 with a record of 70-55. Shields gets the Yankees next in a makeup game.

Mike Fiers limited the Blue Jays to two hits and one run over seven innings of work in the Brewers' 6-1 victory on Tuesday.

The Jays' two hits came in consecutive at-bats in the second inning and led to the team's only run. Otherwise, Fiers was unstoppable, striking out six while issuing just one walk. He retired the last 17 hitters he faced on the way to his third straight win. The right-hander has been terrific all season long in the minors and while it's not likely that he stays at this pace, he's nearly unhittable at the moment. He's got another cake matchup Monday when the Brewers visit the Padres.
Aug 19 - 11:32 PM

Kyle Lohse (ankle) is on track to rejoin the Brewers' rotation during the August 25-27 series versus the Padres.

The club can get by with four starters until Monday, putting Lohse's return date likely on Tuesday. "We want to make sure that he's right," manager Ron Roenicke said. "We know that to get this done, we have to have him at full strength." Lohse missed a start with a sprained ankle but has continued his throwing program.
Aug 19 - 11:11 PM

Chris Tillman struck out nine White Sox hitters, allowing just one run over eight innings in the Orioles' 5-1 victory on Tuesday.

Tillman served up a solo home run to Jose Abreu in the first inning, but he buckled down to hold the Sox scoreless over the next seven frames. The right-hander gave up just three hits and a walk on the evening en route to his 10th win. Tillman won't match his 16-win performance of 2013, but he's somewhat quietly put together a nice season again this year. Tillman owns a 3.55 ERA heading into Monday's start against the Rays.
Aug 19 - 11:03 PM

Andrew Cashner (shoulder) will rejoin the Padres' rotation this weekend in Arizona.

Cashner made his second and final rehab start on Monday, allowing three runs over five innings. He only got his pitch count up to 63, so he doesn't figure to last terribly long this weekend. Fantasy owners might be wise to hold off on activating him immediately even though he's held a 2.36 ERA over 12 starts when healthy.
