Sean Marshall (shoulder) threw a simulated game on Tuesday afternoon.

"Simulated game" is a fancy way of saying "live batting practice." Marshall hopes to return to the active roster by the end of this month, and it sounds as if he'll be able to. Corky Miller said after the session that Marshall is "close -- if not there." The left-hander has been out since late May with a shoulder sprain.

Cubs released RHP Rafael Soriano.

The veteran right-hander was designated for assignment earlier in the week and has now been granted his outright release. Rather than search for a minor league deal, it's expected that he'll take the rest of the season off in preparation for free agency.

Nolan Arenado went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 win over the Giants.

Immediately after Carlos Gonzalez hit homer No. 36 in the first inning, Arenado hit No. 35 of his own against Chris Heston. The modern day Bash Brothers both have a shot at 40 taters, which is more or less the only reason to watch the 56-78 Rockies at this point. The 24-year-old Arenado has now homered in five straight games. He maintains a beautiful .288/.324/.576 triple-slash with the 35 homers and 103 RBI.
Sep 5 - 1:13 AM

Jorge De La Rosa pitched a gem for the second start in a row, limiting the Giants to one run on six hits over seven innings in Friday's 2-1 win.

De La Rosa shutout the Pirates in his last start and almost did likewise to the Giants. The only run to score against him on Friday came home on an RBI single by Angel Pagan in the sixth inning. In addition to the one run allowed, he also struck out seven without walking a batter. The veteran southpaw will carry a 4.24 ERA and 1.37 WHIP into his next outing, a Thursday afternoon road showdown with the Padres.
Sep 5 - 12:47 AM

J.A. Happ was superb in Friday's 9-3 win over the Cardinals, tossing seven innings of shutout ball.

Happ turned in a fantastic start, no caveats. He threw 72 of his 110 pitches for strikes, struck out eight and allowed just three singles over his seven inning of work. Since joining the Pirates in early August, Happ's been brilliant, surrendering just six runs over 34 1/3 innings. That works out to a 1.57 ERA. He'll try to continue this unexpected run of extreme competence in a road start against the Reds next time he toes the rubber.
Sep 5 - 12:15 AM

Hank Conger went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five total RBI in Friday's 8-0 win over the Twins.

Conger blew open a 3-0 game in the fourth inning, stepping to the plate with the bases juiced and unloading on a Mike Pelfrey offering for a grand slam. He also added an RBI single in the eighth inning, just for fun. For a backup catcher, Conger's done a very nice job, particularly in terms of power. The 27-year-old is hitting .220/.314/.457 with 10 homers and 27 RBI over 164 at-bats.
Sep 5 - 12:11 AM

Collin McHugh was superb in Friday's 8-0 win over the Twins, firing 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball.

McHugh scattered seven hits while striking out six and walking one. This was the first time this season he held the opponent scoreless in a start. He's been coming on strong of late, having allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last six outings. For the season, the 28-year-old right-hander holds a 3.75 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. Up next on the docket, a road date with the A's as McHugh looks to continue his recent brilliant ways.
Sep 4 - 11:41 PM

Martin Prado went 5-for-6 with a walk-off RBI double in Friday's 6-5, 11-inning win over the Mets.

Two of Prado's five hits went for doubles, with the last one being the one that ended it all. Christian Yelich scored all the way from first on Prado's double in the bottom of the 11th, sending the few fans who attend September Marlin games home happy. With the five-hit game (his first of the season), the 31-year-old infielder is slashing .284/.328/.385 with seven homers and 47 RBI.
Sep 4 - 11:39 PM

Michael Taylor hit a pinch-hit, walk-off three-run homer in the 10th inning of Friday's 5-2 win over the Braves.

Taylor didn't start the game, as he's fighting through a sore right knee. When he came off the bench to homer off Brandon Cunniff with two runners on and nobody out in the bottom of the 10th, he proved that having functional knees is an overrated aspect of life. This season, the outfielder's hitting .240/.288/.392 with 14 homers, 58 RBI and 15 steals. His power and speed make him a useful fantasy option in deeper NL-only formats.
Sep 4 - 11:07 PM

Joe Kelly logged another quality start in Friday's victory over the Phillies, allowing two runs on five hits over his six frames.

Kelly fanned five opposing hitters while issuing three free passes. Aside from the fourth inning where the Phillies scratched out a pair of runs, Kelly was in complete command. After an absolutely miserable start to the season, Kelly has now won each of his last seven starts, compiling a 2.72 ERA and 33/14 K/BB ratio over 43 innings. He'll look to extend that dominance when he takes on the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Sep 4 - 11:01 PM

Chris Davis mashed another pair of home runs on Friday as the Orioles thrashed the Blue Jays 10-2 in Toronto.

Davis got the O's on the board with a solo blast off Drew Hutchison in the second inning, and added on a two-run shot in the sixth. The 29-year-old slugger has been absolutely locked in at the plate, clobbering five home runs in his last three games, including two consecutive multi-homer games. With his 2-for-5 effort, Davis is now slashing .253/.338/.545 with 40 home runs and 100 RBI. It's the second time in his career that he has crossed each of those milestones.
Sep 4 - 10:46 PM

Alex Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-2 win over the Rays.

Rodriguez's homer opened the scoring for the game in the second inning. It was his 27th home run of the season. He logged a nine-homer July, but hit just two bombs last month. It's been a general cool-down for the 40-year-old as the days have worn on. He entered Friday's game having hit .210/.317/.413 in 40 games since the All-Star Break.
