Dodgers recalled OF Alex Castellanos to Triple-A Albuquerque.

He'll serve as an extra bat off the bench for the final two weeks of the regular season. The 27-year-old outfielder hit .257/.347/.468 with 19 homers, 61 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 105 games at Triple-A.

Elvis Andrus went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, four RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base as the Rangers pounded the Tigers 12-6 on Wednesday.

He also walked in the game just for good measure. The shortstop homered in the fifth, drove in two runs with a single in the sixth and added another RBI single in the seventh. Andrus is having by far his best season at the plate. Today's homer doubled his previous career high of eight set last year. He has a .299 batting average with 16 homers, 76 runs, 64 RBI and 23 stolen bases. He's playing the role of kingmaker in some fantasy leagues this year.

The Dodgers said after Wednesday's game that Yu Darvish left as a precaution because of back tightness.

Darvish had thrown 90 pitches while giving up three runs (all on solo homers) in six innings, so there's no guarantee that he was going to get through the seventh anyway. The hope is that this was nipped in the bud and will cause no further issue.
Aug 17 - 1:42 AM

Anthony Rizzo belted a grand slam against the Reds and finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI in a 7-6 win on Wednesday.

His bases-loaded blast in the first inning gave the Cubs a big lead before starter Homer Bailey had recorded a single out in the contest. He doubled and scored in the third frame. The veteran first baseman is slashing .265/.385/.513 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI, 69 runs and seven steals. This is likely to be his fourth consecutive season with 30-plus dingers.
Aug 17 - 12:57 AM

Charlie Morton punched out nine batters while allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings to earn a 9-5 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

He held Arizona to three knocks, although he did issue four bases-on-balls and it took him 107 pitches to get 19 outs. Morton is sporting extra velocity this year and it has boosted his strikeout rate to levels he has never displayed before. He is now 10-5 with a 3.69 ERA through 18 starts. He has 119 strikeouts and 42 walks in 107 1/3 innings.
Aug 17 - 12:20 AM

Marcus Stroman struck out seven batters and yielded just two runs in 6 1/3 innings to earn a 3-2 victory over the Rays on Wednesday.

It was a walk in the park through the first six frames but then he ran out of gas in the seventh. He quickly loaded the bases on two walks and a single with one out, then walked Steven Souza to force in a run before being relieved of duty having thrown 108 pitches. The strong outing improved his ERA to 2.99 and his record to 11-6. He has 131 strikeouts and 50 walks in 159 1/3 innings.
Aug 16 - 11:01 PM

Wednesday's game between the Indians and Twins has been postponed due to rain.

It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Thursday with Game 1 beginning at 1:10 ET with Game 2 getting underway at 7:10 ET. Kyle Gibson will oppose Carlos Carrasco in the opener with Aaron Slegers and Ryan Merritt facing off in the nightcap.
Aug 16 - 9:35 PM

Wil Myers racked up three steals Wednesday in the Padres’ win over the Phillies.

He reached base four times for the Friars, collecting a single, a double and two walks. Myers accomplished an incredibly rare feat in the fourth inning when he singled, stole second, stole third and later came home on a double steal. Myers hasn’t hit for a high average this year (.240) but his speed/power combo still makes him a valuable fantasy contributor.
Aug 16 - 9:04 PM

Clayton Richard twirled a three-hit shutout Wednesday in a win over the Phillies.

Richard was money all day, recording six strikeouts and only one walk while throwing 72 of his 114 pitches for strikes. He finished strong by retiring the last 10 batters he faced after yielding a two-out walk to Tommy Joseph in the sixth inning. Wednesday was Richard’s second complete game of the season and his first shutout. He’ll take a 4.84 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at St. Louis.
Aug 16 - 9:03 PM

Edwin Diaz collapsed Wednesday against the Orioles, yielding two runs and three walks before being lifted with two outs in the ninth inning.

Just 16 of the right-hander’s 37 pitches went for strikes. Manager Scott Servais decided he’d seen enough after Diaz hit Mark Trumbo with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Mark Rzepczynski came in to record the final out, striking out Chris Davis to preserve the Mariners’ 7-6 victory while earning his first save of the season. Diaz lost his closer’s job for a stretch earlier this year and could be headed that way again, particularly with David Phelps nearing a return from the disabled list.
Aug 16 - 8:11 PM

Tim Beckham homered as part of a two-hit effort Wednesday in the Orioles’ loss to Seattle.

Beckham led off the game with a solo blast and broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the fifth. He’s been impossibly hot since arriving in a deadline deal trade with Tampa Bay, hitting an absurd .485 for the month of August. The former first overall pick has already established new career-highs in both home runs (17) and RBI (48) and will soon have a chance to unseat J.J. Hardy (wrist) as the team's everyday shortstop.
Aug 16 - 8:08 PM

Braves manager Brian Snitker said Matt Kemp (hamstring) will be the starter in left field when he returns from the disabled list.

Kemp will work out on Friday and if all goes well, he'll be activated Saturday versus Cincinnati. Matt Adams has been manning left field in Kemp's absence, though Snitker was clear that Kemp will be the starter upon his return. With Freddie Freeman back at first base full-time, it looks like Adams will be riding the pine for Atlanta.
