Matt Adams (elbow) could pinch-hit on Thursday.

Adams left Wednesday night's game with right elbow discomfort and is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup for Thursday afternoon's series finale with the Rockies. But he's feeling better and should be able to play through the pain down the stretch. It's good news for the Cards, who are still missing starting first baseman Allen Craig.

George Springer (quad) is expected to avoid the disabled list.

It sounds like the left quad discomfort that forced Springer from Monday's game might have been a cramp more than anything else. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said that Springer is considered day-to-day.

Astros recalled OF Derek Fisher from Triple-A Fresno.

George Springer (quad) is expected to avoid the disabled list, but the Astros want to give Fisher another look, anyway. The 23-year-old made a nice five-game impression (.278/.381/.611, two homers) last month and sports a robust .318/.384/.583 line with 21 homers, 66 RBI and 16 steals this season with Fresno. At-bats figure to be available in left field with Marwin Gonzalez moving in to shortstop to cover for Carlos Correa (thumb), so it will be interesting to see whether the Astros give Fisher a chance to run away with a job.

Jose Altuve went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored in the Astros' 13-4 thrashing of the Phillies on Monday.

Altuve reached base in all five of his trips to the plate, including a first-inning walk. He also had two doubles and a pair of run-scoring singles. The star second baseman has somehow gotten hotter since the All-Star break, even after a scorching first half. He's slashing .365/.431/.574 for an Astros team that is 33 games over .500.
Jul 25 - 12:56 AM

Angels placed RHP Alex Meyer on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 20, with right shoulder inflammation.

Meyer certainly didn't show any signs of being injured in his last outing, surrendering just one hit over seven shutout innings versus the Nationals. Unfortunately, the tall right-hander has a history of shoulder issues, so this obviously isn't a good sign. Meyer has continued to struggle with his control this season (42 walks), but he holds a 3.74 ERA with 75 strikeouts over 67 1/3 innings.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Red Sox "continue to scout" Eduardo Nunez.

The impending free agent is a shoo-in to be traded before the deadline. Boston makes some sense as a landing spot for Nunez, as he'd offer insurance for Rafael Devers at third base and could move around to different positions if it looks like Devers is ready to contribute. The 30-year-old is batting .305/.330/.414 with four homers and 17 steals for the Giants this season.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers are "fading" in the trade pursuit of Sonny Gray.

Joel Sherman of New York Post reported earlier Monday that the Brewers and Yankees were viewed as the "strongest pursuers" of Gray, so this is big news. Milwaukee still figures to trade for a starter, but it's looking unlikelier now that that hurler will be Gray. In addition to the Yankees, the Astros, Braves, Mariners, Twins and Indians have been among the teams connected to the A's right-hander.
Jul 24 - 11:35 PM

Mike Moustakas went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in the Royals' 5-3 extra-innings defeat of the Tigers on Monday.

Moustakas hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning and a solo shot in the top of the 12th as Kansas City outlasted Detroit at Comerica Park. The 28-year-old third baseman boasts an .874 OPS with 29 home runs and 64 RBI in 89 games this season for the Royals, who have won six straight games and continue to make a hard charge at a playoff spot.
Jul 24 - 11:32 PM

Mike Leake pitched seven shutout innings Monday in the Cardinals' 8-2 defeat of the Rockies.

Leake carved his way through a dangerous Colorado lineup, yielding only four hits -- all singles -- while striking out six batters and issuing zero walks. It was a nice bounceback effort from the 29-year-old right-hander, who was pounded for seven runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits last Wednesday by the Mets. He'll bring a cool 3.20 ERA into his next start at home versus the Diamondbacks.
Jul 24 - 11:15 PM

Wilson Ramos (head) expects to return to the Rays' lineup by Wednesday.

Ramos will sit out Tuesday after requiring six staples on his head to close a laceration suffered when he was hit by a shattered bat. Evidently he's not experiencing any concussion symptoms and the cut must be relatively minor, which is great news.
Jul 24 - 11:10 PM

Randal Grichuk homered for the fourth straight game Monday as the Cardinals beat the Rockies.

It was a two-run opposite-field shot in the bottom of the fourth inning off Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela. Grichuk has put on a power show lately, but he still holds a rough .227/.280/.458 overall batting line in 2017 and can't be counted on for much consistency down the stretch.
Jul 24 - 11:09 PM

Justin Bour (oblique) will be placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Bour suffered a strained right oblique on Monday. It's unclear at this point how long he'll be sidelined, but oblique injuries typically don't result in minimum stays on the disabled list. Tyler Moore will be in line for more starts at first base.
