Will Venable might not play again this season due to what Padres manager Bud Black refers to as an "abdominal situation."

"It's where the hip flexor meets the abdomen, he's a little sore," Black said. "We are going to keep an eye on him for the next 24, 48 hours." Black added that Venable has been nursing the ailment for "couple of weeks," though it's not clear how he suffered it. It would be an unfortunate ending to what has been a nice year for Venable, who has batted .268/.310/.482 with 22 homers and 22 steals.

German Marquez gave up just one run over seven strong innings against the Dodgers in a 2-1 victory on Monday.

Marquez allowed just two hits, and he walked two and struck out five. Outside of a solo homer by Max Muncy, Marquez was exceptional, and there wasn't much hard contact against the right-hander throughout. Marquez has had a few clunkers this season, but he's pitched better than his 4.62 ERA and 1.50 WHIP might suggest. He'll have a chance to lower both on Sunday when he faces the Reds.

Gleyber Torres homered twice, totaling three RBI, in the Yankees' 10-5 victory over the Rangers on Monday.

The 21-year-old top infield prospect hit both of his bombs off 44-year-old Rangers starter Bartolo Colon -- a two-run shot in the top of the second inning, and a solo shot in the top of the sixth. Torres was not a huge slugger in the minor leagues, but he already has six home runs in his first 25 major league games, along with 18 RBI and a sweet .321/.389/.571 batting line. The kid is dripping with talent.

Twins designated RHP Phil Hughes for assignment.

Hughes still has more than $22 million remaining on his contract that runs through the end of next season, which the Twins are still responsible for. They're wisely treating it as a sunk cost and moving on. Hughes holds a 5.99 ERA since the beginning of 2016 and has looked worse than ever this year after coming back from a second thoracic outlet surgery. He'll turn 32 next month and will undoubtedly have to settle for a minor league contract wherever he winds up.
May 21 - 11:24 PM

Manny Machado clubbed his 15th home run of the season Monday in the Orioles' 3-2 defeat of the White Sox.

It was a fourth-inning solo shot off White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago. Machado also drew a walk in the victory, finishing 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. The 25-year-old impending free agent superstar is batting .343/.420/.663 with the 15 dingers and 43 RBI in 47 total games this season.
May 21 - 11:21 PM

Jose Berrios held the Tigers to two runs over eight innings Monday in the Twins' 4-2 victory.

Nicholas Castellanos popped Berrios for a solo homer in the top of the first inning and an RBI single in the top of the third, but the 23-year-old right-hander allowed just one other hit and struck out nine in his second straight dominant outing. Berrios has brought his season ERA down to 3.82 and he's also rocking an impressive 0.91 WHIP and 59/12 K/BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings this year. Up next is a road start against the Mariners.
May 21 - 11:06 PM

Miles Mikolas threw his first MLB shutout, tallying nine strikeouts against just one walk, in the Cardinals' 5-0 win over the Royals on Monday.

It was also the first-ever complete game at the MLB level for Mikolas, who is 6-0 with a brilliant 2.24 ERA and 46/6 K/BB ratio in 60 1/3 innings this season. The former member of the Padres and Rangers signed a two-year, $15.5 million free agent contract with St. Louis this winter after spending three years in Japan. He clearly figured something out overseas.
May 21 - 10:50 PM

Juan Soto hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat and finished 2-for-4 in his first big-league start Monday against the Padres.

Soto didn't start against the lefty on Sunday, but he was in there against fellow southpaw Robbie Erlin tonight and he went deep in the second inning. The homer didn't come in his first major league at-bat, since he had one off the bench yesterday, but it was close enough. It seemed unlikely that he'd play much against lefties initially, but he helped his case here, even if Erlin has been worse against lefties than righties over the course of his career.
May 21 - 10:18 PM

Astros released 1B Jon Singleton.

The former top prospect batted just .171/.290/.331 over 420 plate appearances with the Astros from 2014-15 and didn't hit much the last two years in the minors, either. He was suspended 100 games in January following a third positive test for a drug of abuse. Singleton is still just 26 and should resurface somewhere, but obviously his future outlook is cloudy.
May 21 - 8:29 PM

Clayton Kershaw (biceps) will throw another bullpen session Wednesday before throwing a simulated game Saturday.

He threw his first bullpen session since his biceps injury on Sunday and played catch Monday. The simulated game could be in lieu of a rehab start, and if that's the case Kershaw could be ready to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation late next week. He's been sidelined for nearly all of May.
May 21 - 7:28 PM

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that a decision on whether to activate Greg Bird (ankle) will come "maybe a week from now."

Boone said Sunday that Bird could return at some point this week, but it sounds like it will be a little longer than that. Bird -- who has been out all season following March ankle surgery -- entered Monday batting .174/.387/.304 with one homer over his first eight rehab games before going deep in his first at-bat with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
May 21 - 6:54 PM

The Orioles plan for Zach Britton (Achilles) to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on May 30.

He'll obviously need a handful of rehab appearances before being activated. Coming back from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Britton has been throwing off a mound for nearly a month and will throw a simulated game Tuesday. He would seem to be tracking toward a return in mid-June if all goes well.
