Alex Rios became the third player to hit for the cycle this year Monday in the rout of the Astros.

Rios joined Mike Trout and Houston's Brandon Barnes as the only players with cycles last year. The Rangers just had one from Adrian Beltre last August. Rios got his in a mere six innings tonight, and he ended up leaving prior to his fifth at-bat. He's hitting .288 with six homers in 160 at-bats since being acquired from the White Sox last month.

Joe Panik (back) is back in the Giants' lineup Friday.

Panik missed a couple games with a stiff back. He returns to a .309/.375/.440 batting line.

Hanley Ramirez (shin) is not in the Red Sox' lineup Friday.

Ramirez injured his shin during Thursday's game. He's considered day-to-day. Alejandro De Aza is in left field Friday.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that there's "nothing happening" on the Justin Upton trade front and "it appears he's staying put at deadline."

Things can always change, of course, but there has been surprisingly little trade rumors of late involving the outfielder. The Padres appear content to pick up a draft pick for Upton this winter rather than deal him for a trade package they deem unsatisfactory.
Jul 31 - 3:19 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Rangers "appear to be planning to hold" Yovani Gallardo.

They've been telling teams all along that they'd rather keep Gallardo and make him a qualifying offer over the winter if they're unable to get a trade proposal they like. Evidently teams haven't met the asking price. The Dodgers, Cubs and Blue Jays have been linked to the right-hander.

Twins acquired RHP Kevin Jepsen from the Rays for RHP Chih-Wei Hu and RHP Alexis Tapia.

Jepsen has pretty much the same ERA this year as last (2.81 vs. 2.63), but it's come with weaker peripherals. Last year for the Angels, he had a 75/23 K/BB ratio in 65 innings. This year, he has a 34/20 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings. The Twins will try him in a setup role and hope for the best, but it'd be no surprise to see him start to fade.
Jul 31 - 2:37 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are "making a push" for Yoenis Cespedes.

The Mets had a deal in place for Carlos Gomez and were close on Jay Bruce, only to see both potential trades fall apart. It appears they've moved their focus to Cespedes as they seek some offensive help. It's unclear at this point what the Mets would have to give up.
Jul 31 - 2:20 PM

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Cubs "would love to pull off a blockbuster" and land Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel from the Padres.

The Cubs, Padres and Red Sox reportedly discussed a possible three-team blockbuster deal, but Nightengale says the Cubs and Padres are dealing exclusively with each other on this one. It's unclear what would be headed to San Diego in the deal, but Chicago has numerous assets on the block like Starlin Castro and Javier Baez.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports that the Blue Jays have acquired Ben Revere from the Phillies.

It's unclear at this point what the Blue Jays are giving up in return. Revere will take over in left field for Toronto and possibly slide into the leadoff spot. He could score a ton of runs in front of that dynamic offense.
Jul 31 - 2:06 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Twins have acquired Kevin Jepsen from the Rays.

The Twins have been seeking bullpen help and appear to have landed their man. Jepsen has had a nice year in Tampa, putting up a 2.81 ERA while striking out 34 across 41 2/3 innings. Minnesota has had trouble bridging the gap from their starters to closer Glen Perkins and Jepsen should help out in that regard.
Jul 31 - 1:54 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Astros "continue to talk" to the Reds about Aroldis Chapman.

The Astros have also been connected to Craig Kimbrel, but Heyman says he "may be backup plan," as Houston ownership "is said to want Chapman." FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal has said it's "50/50" as to whether Chapman winds up being dealt. The Diamondbacks had been in the mix but the Reds don't appear too enticed by the package they offered.
Jul 31 - 1:51 PM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Blue Jays will acquire Mark Lowe from the Mariners in exchange for three minor leaguers.

Lowe inked a minor league deal with the M's over the winter and wasn't called up until May, but he's since posted a 1.00 ERA with 47 strikeouts over 36 innings. He'll held set up with the Blue Jays.
