Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago was told by a source that Paul Konerko is expected to address his future "in some capacity" at some point during the team's final homestand this weekend.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier this month that Konerko has been telling friends that he wants to return to the White Sox this year, but his comments to Levine on Monday cast at least some doubt on that scenario. "There are certain things I don't feel obligated to give out [or] tell people," said Konerko. "There are some things that are private, and some people take it the wrong way." The 37-year-old has battled injuries this season while hitting just .248 with 11 home runs and a career-low .674 OPS in 121 games.

Royals designated RHP Joe Blanton for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Johnny Cueto. Blanton had a 3.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 40/7 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings (four starts, 11 relief appearances) this season for Kansas City. He is 34 years old but will probably draw interest on waivers.

Mike Trout is not in the Angels' lineup Tuesday.

Trout tweaked his left wrist Sunday afternoon on a diving catch, though he also went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in that same game. It's obviously not a serious issue. Daniel Robertson will start in center field Tuesday night against the Astros.

Henderson Alvarez is undergoing shoulder surgery.

Alvarez was examined this week by Dr. James Andrews, who apparently recommended the shoulder procedure. The 25-year-old right-hander was limited to just four starts this season because of what was originally labeled shoulder inflammation. It's not clear if he'll be ready by next spring. Shoulders are often trickier than elbows.

According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals are nearing a deal for Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon has said that he won't waive his no-trade clause unless he gets to remain a closer, so he's presumably going to push Drew Storen out of the ninth-inning role in Washington. Papelbon, who's making $13 million this year and carries a $13 million vesting option for 2016, owns a sparkling 1.59 ERA and 40/8 K/BB ratio through 39 1/3 innings this season.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com hears from a source who believes the Rockies are more likely to trade Carlos Gonzalez over the winter as opposed to this week.

We're not so sure about that, as Gonzalez has been red-hot this month. Given his injury history, this could be the perfect time for the Rockies to get aggressive. The 29-year-old is still owed $37 million from 2016-2017.
Jul 28 - 3:57 PM

Brock Holt (knee) remains out of the starting lineup Tuesday against the White Sox.

Holt sat out Monday after leaving Sunday's game with a hyperextended knee and he apparently needs at least another day. Jemile Weeks will fill in at second base again on Tuesday while Alejandro De Aza will get a shot out of No. 2 spot in the order.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the Diamondbacks are talking to the Reds about a trade for Aroldis Chapman.

It would be a weird move for the Diamondbacks, who aren't in contention this season. A dominant closer is a luxury in such a situation, but Arizona apparently sees him as a difference-maker as they look toward 2016. Chapman, who will be eligible for free agency after next season, has also reportedly drawn interest from the Nationals.
Jul 28 - 3:20 PM

Red Sox transferred RHP Clay Buchholz from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot for Jean Machi on the 40-man roster and also rules Buchholz out until the early part of September. Of course, Buchholz estimated last week that he's likely about five or six weeks away from throwing off a mound as he recovers from a right flexor strain, so he's no sure thing to pitch again this season.
Jul 28 - 3:10 PM

Marlins activated 2B Dee Gordon from the 15-day disabled list.

Gordon only needed one minor league rehab game to prove that he was ready to go. The speedy second baseman has been out since July 12 with a dislocated left thumb. He returns to a .338/.359/.413 batting line to go along with 33 steals.
Jul 28 - 3:04 PM

Royals acquired INF/OF Ben Zobrist and cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Aaron Brooks and LHP Sean Manaea.

The deal is official. Zobrist drew interest from a long list of contenders, but the Royals are going for it and paid the price to bring to bring him into the fold. The 34-year-old impending free agent has an .801 OPS over 67 games this season and can be used in the infield and the outfield. He should be a useful piece for Ned Yost and the first-place Royals.
Jul 28 - 2:52 PM

David Wright (back) took grounders at third base Tuesday at Citi Field.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said last Thursday that the hope was that Wright would be able to do baseball activities this week in New York and so far things are going to according to plan. It's unclear what the next step will be and obviously he has a long way to go before beginning a rehab assignment, but it's a step in the right direction.
