Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run as the Mets beat the Reds 4-2 on Tuesday.

Murphy's home run was his 13th of the season, giving him 76 RBI and 92 runs scored. The second baseman is finishing strong, too, as he's batting .303 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored in September. Murphy has now hit safely in 18 of 23 games this month.

Ken Giles, in his new role as the Phillies' closer, pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's victory versus the Blue Jays.

Giles allowed a leadoff single to Edwin Encarnacion, but got Chris Colabello to fly out, Russell Martin to line out, and Danny Valencia to ground out in an otherwise easy ninth inning. Jonathan Papelbon was traded prior to the start of Tuesday's game. As a result, Giles will function as the Phillies' regular closer going forward and should be owned in all formats. He has the potential to be an elite closer, though he won't see many save opportunities for the Phillies, baseball's worst team by record. Having functioned as Papelbon's setup man for the bulk of the season, Giles owns a 1.81 ERA and a 54/20 K/BB ratio in 44 2/3 innings.

Noah Syndergaard fired eight shutout innings -- and was perfect through the first six -- in Tuesday's win against the Padres.

Syndergaard lost his bid for a perfect game and a no-hitter when Will Venable led off the seventh inning with a single. It was one of only three hits he allowed on the evening while walking none and striking out nine. The right-hander has, in eight of 14 starts to begin his major league career, limited the opposition to one or zero runs. Syndergaard has an outstanding 2.70 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 91/20 K/BB ratio over 86 2/3 innings. He'll toe the slab at home against the Nationals next.
Jul 28 - 9:37 PM

Jose Bautista left Tuesday's game versus the Phillies with an apparent right hamstring injury.

Bautista pulled up lame while running out a groundball. It looked like a potentially significant injury, but we'll have to wait and see what the Blue Jays say after the game.
Jul 28 - 9:19 PM

Angels acquired OF David Murphy and cash considerations from the Indians in exchange for SS Eric Stamets.

Murphy should take over as the regular left fielder against right-handers, although he could also see some start in the designated hitter spot. He's batting .296/.344/.437 this season and should form a solid platoon with Shane Victorino.
Jul 28 - 8:35 PM

Devon Travis left Tuesday's game versus the Phillies after aggravating his left shoulder injury.

Travis returned to action last month after missing five weeks with a shoulder malady. It's unclear how he aggravated it, but the young second baseman might have to go back to the disabled list.
Jul 28 - 8:21 PM

Nationals acquired RHP Jonathan Papelbon and cash considerations from the Phillies in exchange for RHP Nick Pivetta.

He'll slide into the closer role for the Nats, pushing Drew Storen to the eighth inning. Papelbon also agreed to drop his 2016 salary from $13 million to $11 million in order to have the vesting option exercised, so he's under contract through next season. Ken Giles will take over as the Phillies' closer.
Jul 28 - 8:14 PM

The A's will use Edward Mujica as their closer following the trade of Tyler Clippard.

He hasn't been the club's most effective reliever, but how he's been used indicated that he'd probably be the guy. Having closer experience surely helped him, too. Mujica has put up a 3.68 ERA and 12/2 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings since joining the A's in May. Scoop him up in your league if he's still available.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Astros are "making a strong effort" for Cole Hamels.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported something similar on Tuesday. It's still unknown whether Hamels will would wind up approving a deal to Houston, but it appears the Astros are giving it their best shot. The Phillies have reportedly told teams to get their best offers in for Hamels on Wednesday.
Jul 28 - 7:48 PM

Starling Marte was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup because of gastritis.

In other words, he has a tummy ache. Marte should be ready to roll in a day or two. Jaff Decker has assumed his spot in left field.
Jul 28 - 7:46 PM

Angels acquired OF/DH David DeJesus from the Rays in exchange for RHP Eduar Lopez.

The Angels got Shane Victorino on Monday and have now picked up DeJesus and are slated to acquire David Murphy on Tuesday. DeJesus has faded after a nice start to the season, hitting .259/.323/.375 with five homers over 257 plate appearances. He should see a decent amount of time in the designated hitter spot and possibly in left field.
Jul 28 - 6:43 PM

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Angels are close to acquiring David Murphy from the Indians.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says the Indians will receive shortstop prospect Eric Stamets in return. While it won't be a headline-grabbing move, Murphy should be a nice upgrade for the Angels in left field, as he's batting .296/.344/.437 this season and has always been a pretty good hitter versus righties. He should form a platoon with Shane Victorino.
