Gio Gonzalez will no longer start Sunday's season finale for the Nationals.

It was reported before Saturday's game that Gio would get the ball in the finale, but after Saturday's win Nationals manager Davey Johnson decided to go with his original starter, Tanner Roark. Gonzalez' season is over, and he finishes with an 11-8 record and 3.36 ERA.

Astros placed OF Josh Reddick on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with a leg infection.

This has been a lingering thing for Reddick, though he should be able to return from the DL when first eligible late next week. Jake Marisnick will replace him on the Astros' roster for now. Reddick, 31, has a .740 OPS with six homers and one stolen base in 42 games this year.

Lorenzo Cain is getting the day off Wednesday.

Christian Yelich will start in center field and bat second versus Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Godley, with Hernan Perez in left and Domingo Santana in right. It's just a routine day of rest for Cain, who's slashing .283/.391/.452 with six home runs, 10 stolen bases, and 29 runs scored in 46 games this year.

An MRI taken Tuesday on Khris Davis' right groin revealed a Grade 1 strain.

That's the least-severe type of strain, but it's still usually a multi-week injury and the 30-year-old slugger will almost certainly be placed on the disabled list Wednesday. Davis suffered the injury on a swing in Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays and hasn't played since, so the move can be made retroactive to May 21. He's sitting on an .805 OPS, 13 home runs, and 38 RBI in 47 games.
May 23 - 8:29 AM

Yasiel Puig homered and drove in two runs in a 5-3 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Puig's homer was a solo shot off of Bryan Shaw in the sixth inning. He also drove in a run on a bases loaded walk in the first, and he reached via base-on-balls again later in the contest. Since returning from the disabled list with a hip injury, Puig has really swung the bat well, and his .221/.294/.393 line is a big improvement over where it was just a few weeks ago. When Puig is hot, there aren't many better.

Guillermo Heredia went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in a 3-2 victory over the Athletics in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Heredia also reached twice via walk. The double was a shot to deep right-center that scored Jean Segura from first base and gave the Mariners the go-ahead run in the victory over Oakland. Heredia is going to get much more playing time over the coming weeks because of injuries and Robinson Cano's suspension, and if he can keep up what he's doing -- .286/.439/.460 in 32 games -- or even a semblance of it, he's not going to give up a starting spot anytime soon.
May 23 - 12:59 AM

Gerrit Cole continued his dominance on Tuesday, allowing just two runs on four hits over six innings in a victory over the Giants.

The right-hander racked up another eight strikeouts in this one against three walks. The only success against him came on Brandon Crawford's two-run homer in the fifth inning. Next to teammate Justin Verlander, there hasn't been a better pitcher in all of baseball this season. Cole now sits at 5-1 with a microscopic 1.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 101/17 K/BB ratio in his 67 2/3 innings (13.43 K/9). He'll do battle against the Indians his next time out in Cleveland on Sunday.

X-rays turned up negative on Mitch Haniger's left wrist.

Haniger was removed from Tuesday's game against the Athletics after getting hit on the left arm by a Trevor Cahill pitch, but he escaped with a bruise and can be considered day-to-day. The 27-year-old outfielder has an outstanding .296/.381/.568 batting line with 11 home runs, 36 RBI, three stolen bases, and 22 runs scored in 47 games this season.

Lance Lynn turned in his finest start as a member of the Twins on Tuesday, allowing just five hits and a walk over 6 2/3 shutout innings in a victory over the Tigers.

The veteran right-hander struck out four on the night, throwing 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes. It was a much-needed bounceback performance after Lynn was hit hard in each of his previous two starts. Take it with a grain of salt though, as this terrific effort came against a struggling Tigers' offense that's missing Miguel Cabrera and Jeimer Candelario. Let's see how he fares on Monday against the Royals in Kansas City before we discuss Lynn and his 6.34 ERA as a viable mixed league option.

Matt Harvey spun six innings of one-run ball against the Pirates on Tuesday in the Reds' 7-2 win.

Harvey had to escape a bases loaded, one-out jam in the first inning and gave up a solo home run to Colin Moran in the fourth. In the other four innings combined he surrendered just an infield single. In three career starts at Great American Ball Park, Harvey now holds a 1.77 ERA and 19/3 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings. Harvey wasn’t great his last time out but now holds a 2.57 ERA over his first three starts as a Red. His next outing will come at Coors Field.
May 22 - 11:48 PM

Scooter Gennett smashed a grand slam and drove in six runs in the Reds' win over the Pirates on Tuesday.

It's his first grand slam this season after he ripped an improbable four grand slams last year. Gennett also had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. He's hit six home runs over his last 13 games after clubbing just two homers over his first 34 contests. Gennett was looking droppable after suffering a shoulder injury earlier this month, but his batting line is now up to .324/.358/.528 after his hot streak.
May 22 - 11:46 PM

Matt Boyd (oblique) expects to make his next scheduled start.

Boyd left Tuesday night's game against the Twins after feeling some spasming around his left oblique in the bottom of the fifth inning. He tried to talk manager Ron Gardenhire into keeping him in, but Boyd had walked two straight batters (after throwing four scoreless frames to begin the evening) and Gardenhire decided to play it safe. Boyd holds a 3.29 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 41/17 K/BB ratio in 52 innings (nine starts) this season. He's lined up to face the Angels at home next Monday.
