Elvin Ramirez has elected free agency.

Ramirez posted a 5.46 ERA with a 49/45 K/BB ratio at Triple-A this season. The 25-year-old has a live arm, though, and will get an opportunity somewhere.

Jon Niese kept the Giants off the board over eight innings, earning his fourth win of the season on Monday.

Niese limited the Giants to five base runners (three hits and two walks) while striking out four. The lefty hit the kids in May but has racked up quality starts in each of his last six starts. As a result, his ERA is down to 3.58 with a 1.42 WHIP and a 67/33 K/BB ratio in 98 innings. The Mets, who have been attempting to trade him, couldn't be happier. Niese will take on the Diamondbacks at home in his final first half start.

Johnny Monell hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to help the Mets hold off the Giants on Monday.

Neither the Mets nor the Giants seemed very interested in scoring runs after eight innings, but perhaps Monell just wanted to go home. Finishing 1-for-4, he doubled in a pair of runs off of Santiago Casilla to break a scoreless tie. He later came around to score on a Juan Lagares single. Monell had accrued an RBI in only one of his other 20 games this season, back on May 10 against the Phillies. He's batting an unimpressive .189/.250/.243 with four RBI.

Jon Lester brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but ultimately lost it and the game on Monday after giving up two unearned runs in seven innings against the Cardinals.

The highlight of the game may have been Jon Lester ending a career-long 0-for-66 skid at the plate when he beat out an infield single in the second inning. He brought a no-hit bid into the seventh inning but lost it when Jhonny Peralta, fittingly, reached on an infield single. Kris Bryant later committed an error, which set up two unearned runs. Lester allowed two hits overall, walked two, and struck out eight on the evening. Lester has pitched quite well after a tough April, owning a 3.48 ERA on the year with a 1.28 WHIP and a 101/30 K/BB ratio in 103 1/3 innings. He wraps up his first half with a home start against the White Sox.
Jul 7 - 12:11 AM

Kelly Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run to help the Braves fend off the Brewers on Monday.

Johnson started the scoring with a two-run blast to right-field off of Kyle Lohse in the first inning. He added an RBI single in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game. The 33-year-old has cooled off considerably since being activated from the disabled list a month ago, but is still hitting a respectable .272/.315/.437 with seven home runs and 28 RBI.
Jul 6 - 11:42 PM

Brian Dozier slugged a walk-off two-run home run in the 10th inning, helping the Twins outlast the Orioles on Monday.

Dozier was 0-for-3 with a walk leading into the at-bat against Tommy Hunter. Perhaps angered by his being left off the AL All-Star roster, Dozier parked a two-run home run beyond the left field fence for his 17th home run of the season. Among qualified second basemen, Stephen Drew is the only other hitter at the position with double-digits in home runs (11). Dozier is hitting a cool .260/.332/.517 with 42 RBI and seven stolen bases.
Jul 6 - 11:02 PM

Preston Tucker had the best game of his young career, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Astros past the Indians on Monday.

Tucker, celebrating his 25th birthday, drilled a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning against Carlos Carrasco and added an RBI single in the sixth. It's the first four-hit game of his young career. He's hitting .252/.316/.434 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 174 plate appearances.
Jul 6 - 10:48 PM

Pedro Alvarez delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, helping the Pirates eke out a win against the Padres on Monday.

In a 1-1 game, Alvarez stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Brandon Maurer. He hit a single to right-center to plate the winning run, finishing 1-for-4. Alvarez has been solid this season, hitting almost exclusively against right-handed pitching. He owns a .242/.313/.450 triple-slash line with 12 home runs and 37 RBI.
Jul 6 - 10:37 PM

Yunel Escobar had to exit Monday's game versus the Reds with left hamstring tightness.

Escobar didn't seem to injure the hamstring on one particular play, but he was spotted stretching multiple times as the ailment appeared to creep up on him. It's unclear at this point how much time he might miss.
Jul 6 - 10:33 PM

Denard Span left Monday's game against the Reds with back spasms.

Span is probably looking forward to the All-Star break in order to have some rest, as he's dealt with the back issue off and on for a month now. Consider him day-to-day.
Jul 6 - 10:30 PM

Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to break a tie and ultimately send the Reds to a win over the Nationals on Monday.

Suarez, in a 3-for-4 effort, took reliever Casey Janssen out to left field to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth inning. He has done a commendable job filling in for Zack Cozart at shortstop, batting .329/.372/.493 with three home runs, 13 RBI, and three stolen bases since June 11.
Jul 6 - 10:23 PM

Chris Sale went all nine innings and limited the Blue Jays to two runs to earn the win on Monday.

Sale allowed two solo home runs: one to Chris Colabello in the third inning and one to Josh Donaldson in the sixth. That was it for run-scoring. Fresh off of his nomination to the 2015 All-Star roster for the American League, Sale gave up six hits overall, walked none, and struck out six. The lefty's streak of eight consecutive starts with double-digit strikeouts has come to an end. Now with a 2.80 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 147/22 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings, Sale will match up against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in his next start.
