Jhonny Peralta will start at shortstop in Game 5 of the ALDS against the Athletics on Thursday.

Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray found themselves in a low-scoring pitchers' duel last time out, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland is looking for some offense in the deciding Game 5, so Peralta will get the call over glove-first shortstop Jose Iglesias. The full Tigers' lineup: Austin Jackson CF, Torii Hunter RF, Miguel Cabrera 3B, Prince Fielder 1B, Victor Martinez DH, Peralta SS, Alex Avila C, Omar Infante 2B, Don Kelly LF.

Indians signed OF Melky Cabrera to a minor league contract.

The news was first reported by Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital and confirmed by MLB.com's Jon Morosi. Cabrera, 33, batted .285/.324/.423 with 17 home runs and 85 RBI last season for the White Sox and Royals. He will need some time in the minors to knock the rust off but should be added to the Indians' roster sometime next month and see at-bats in right field.

Didi Gregorius launched a grand slam in the Yankees' rout of the Twins on Monday.

Gregorius was the only Yankees hitter who had not reached base when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and he quickly righted that wrong with a four-run bomb to right-center field. The 28-year-old shortstop has an outstanding .324/.429/.746 batting line with seven home runs in 21 games this season, and he leads all major league hitters with 24 RBI.
Apr 23 - 10:59 PM

Giancarlo Stanton finished 4-for-4 with a homer, a walk, two RBI, and three runs scored Monday in the Yankees' 14-1 rout of the Twins.

Stanton drew a six-pitch walk in his first plate appearance, singled in his second plate appearance, belted a long solo homer in his third plate appearance, hit an RBI single in his fourth plate appearance, and then added another single for good measure in his fifth and final plate appearance. It's just the sixth time in Stanton's career that he has reached base five times in a single game. His batting average jumped from .185 to .224, and his OPS rose from .678 to .778. The 28-year-old slugger is going to be just fine.

Eugenio Suarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

That means he'll play a game just 16 days after suffering a fractured left thumb, an injury that routinely takes players six-plus weeks to come back from. How many rehab games Suarez will require isn't known, but as long as he feels good it shouldn't take many since he didn't wind up missing much time.

Raisel Iglesias earned his third save of the season Monday in the Reds' 10-4 win over the Braves.

Iglesias entered the game in the top of the eighth inning, when the Braves were still within striking distance. He retired all four batters he faced, including a strikeout of Preston Tucker in the top of the ninth. The 28-year-old closer holds a sharp 0.93 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts through 9 2/3 innings this season.
Apr 23 - 9:57 PM

Cody Allen struck out all three batters he faced to earn his fourth save of the season Monday night against the Orioles.

Allen carved up Chris Davis, Danny Valencia, and Chance Sisco to ice a 2-1 victory for Cleveland. The 29-year-old closer now has 12 strikeouts in 10 innings this season and he's yet to allow a run.
Apr 23 - 9:41 PM

Carlos Carrasco worked 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball Monday in a win over the Orioles.

Carrasco scattered six hits and two walks while striking out seven. He's now 4-0 on the year with a brilliant 2.31 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 28/6 K/BB ratio in 35 innings. Up next is a start at home against the Mariners.
Apr 23 - 9:32 PM

Avisail Garcia exited Monday's game against the Mariners with a right hamstring strain.

Garcia had to be helped off the field, and the fact that the White Sox are already calling the injury a strain isn't a good sign. He'll be re-evaluated Tuesday, but a trip to the disabled list seems likely. The outfielder had an RBI single in one of his two plate appearances before exiting.
Apr 23 - 8:58 PM

Mark Melancon (forearm) will play catch Thursday.

It will be the first time he's done any throwing since he was diagnosed with inflammation in his flexor tendon just before Opening Day. The Giants will have no idea on a timetable for Melancon until they see how he progresses. The veteran reliever should get his closer job back eventually when he's physically ready, but when/if that happens is up in the air. Hunter Strickland has been handling the ninth inning for San Francisco with Melancon out.
Apr 23 - 7:50 PM

Dodgers recalled RHP Walker Buehler from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Buehler will make his first major league start on Monday against the Marlins. If things go well, he could get another start on Saturday in San Francisco during a doubleheader. Buehler struggled as a reliever last September with the Dodgers, but the top prospect holds a 2.08 ERA and 16/4 K/BB ratio over 13 innings this season for Oklahoma City. He's a worthy streamer Monday.
Apr 23 - 7:25 PM

X-rays on Byron Buxton's (migraines) left foot came back negative.

Buxton fouled a ball off the foot in his first rehab game with High-A Fort Myers on Sunday. It's keeping him out of Monday's game and could potentially push back his return to the Twins a day or two. He had been slated for activation on Wednesday. Buxton originally went on the disabled list due to migraines but he's been clear of those symptoms.
