Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Andre Ethier (ankle) will be a "game-time decision" for Game 1 of the NLCS on Friday.

CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reported earlier Thursday that Ethier wouldn't be ready to play center field early on in the series, but evidently he might have jumped the gun. It's still possible that the Dodgers will play it safe and continue to limit Ethier to pinch-hitting duty. He hasn't started a game since September 13. Mattingly said that a decision on Ethier's status won't be made until late afternoon Friday.

Cameron Maybin exited Monday's game against the White Sox with an apparent injury to his left thumb.

Uh oh. Maybin made his return last weekend after missing a couple of weeks with a left thumb sprain and it appears that he aggravated the injury while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning. The Tigers should pass along an update soon. Tyler Collins replaced Maybin in the lineup.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated Monday that it's possible Clayton Kershaw (back) could be activated depending on how he feels in his simulated game on Tuesday.

Kershaw hasn't pitched in game since June 26, but he made it through a 60-pitch bullpen session on Friday and is slated to face hitters on Tuesday. It would be aggressive to bring him back after that, but the minor league season is coming to a close. It would be a huge boost to Dodgers fans and fantasy owners if he can come back and be even 80 percent of his usual self. Stay tuned.
Aug 29 - 7:39 PM

Pirates placed RHP Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 25, with posterior inflammation in his right elbow.

The move clears a spot for Monday's starter, Steven Brault. An MRI has ruled out structural damage in Cole's elbow, but he was scheduled to get a second opinion in Los Angeles. There should be more clarity on his status in the next couple of days.
Aug 29 - 7:03 PM

Justin Turner is not in Monday's lineup against the Rockies.

Turner will sit for the series opener at Coors Field, which is unfortunate news for fantasy owners who were excited about the matchup. Rob Segedin is getting the start at third base and will bat eighth against Jon Gray.
Aug 29 - 5:14 PM

Junior Guerra (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list to start Friday against the Pirates.

Guerra, out since early August due to right elbow inflammation, threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday. The 31-year-old rookie has posted a surprising 2.93 ERA over 107 1/3 innings this season and should be stashed away in fantasy leagues in anticipation of his return.
Aug 29 - 4:57 PM

Koji Uehara (pectoral) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as next Monday.

Great news for Uehara, who threw 20 pitches to hitters in a simulated workout on Monday. He still has two bullpen sessions coming up, but things are moving in the right direction. Uehara has been sidelined since July 20 with a pectoral strain, but his return would be a big boost to the back-end of Boston's bullpen.
Aug 29 - 4:46 PM

Alex Cobb (elbow) will make his return to the Rays' rotation Friday against the Blue Jays.

The wait is finally over, as Cobb will make his first start in the majors since September 28, 2014. The veteran right-hander posted a 6.65 ERA over eight starts during his minor league rehab assignment and should be considered a wait-and-see option in fantasy leagues. The Rays are expected to use a six-man rotation in September.
Aug 29 - 4:42 PM

Ian Kinsler will bat second Monday against the White Sox.

Kinsler has batted leadoff in all 123 of his starts this season, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is trying something different. Cameron Maybin will bat leadoff against James Shields.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: Whether it's the lead-off spot or not, Kinsler is in an excellent position to succeed at home against James Shields. The White Sox hurler has allowed a 2.29 HR/9 rate to RH bats to go along with an incredibly weak 8.1 K-BB%, so Kinsler is just one of a few Tigers worth targeting heavily this evening. Not only is the long ball a problem, but Shields has allowed a ton of hard contact to RH bats - he enters tonight with a 25.9 Hd-Sft% vs. RH bats on the season.
Aug 29 - 4:23 PM

Yulieski Gurriel will start at third base for Monday's game against the Athletics.

It will be his first action in the field since joining the Astros. Gurriel is 5-for-14 (.357) with two doubles and two RBI through his first six games in the majors. Alex Bregman will slide into the DH spot on Monday.
Aug 29 - 4:20 PM

Jacob deGrom will return to the Mets' rotation Friday against the Nationals.

DeGrom has struggled over his last two starts and will be skipped in the rotation on Monday in order to give him a bit of a breather. His return will push Noah Syndergaard's next start back to Saturday.
Aug 29 - 4:15 PM

Neil Walker (back) is out of the Mets' lineup again Monday against the Marlins.

Walker has now missed consecutive games due to a back injury from earlier this month. He's been red-hot for a while now, so his absence really hurts. Consider him day-to-day for now.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: With Walker and Cabrera out of the Mets lineup, it improves the spot for Jose Fernandez even further. Fernandez still owns an eye-popping 15.0 SwStr% and 35.4 K% (both top the list on tonight’s slate) so his ceiling is absolutely immense on any given day, especially considering the Mets own the league’s 7th highest K% against RHP (22.0%). If you are spending upwards of $10K on a SP, go ahead and pay all the way up for the Marlins ace.
