Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports that the Cubs are interviewing Padres bench coach Rick Renteria about their managerial vacancy Monday in California.

The Cubs have already interviewed former Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch and former Nationals and Indians manager Manny Acta, but recent reports indicate that Renteria could be the favorite for the job. Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar, Jr. is also expected to get an interview.

Jed Lowrie exited Monday's game against the Padres with a right thumb injury.

The injury occurred on a slide into home plate. It's not clear at this point how serious the ailment is, but the Astros should have more on Lowrie's status after the game. It's awful timing, as the red-hot Lowrie went 2-for-3 with a homer Monday to push his season batting line to .300/.432/.567.
Apr 28 - 1:15 AM

Joc Pederson went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI double, and a solo home run in Monday's win versus the Giants.

Pederson knocked in a run with a double to cap off the Dodgers' four-run third inning. He then homered off of George Kontos in the sixth inning, providing an insurance run. The rookie has lived up to expectations thus far, batting .296/.458/.556 with three home runs and nine RBI.
Apr 28 - 1:10 AM

Carl Crawford had to leave Monday's game against the Giants with tightness in his right side.

More should be known after the game, but obviously if it's an oblique issue he could wind up on the disabled list. With Yasiel Puig (hamstring) already on the shelf, Alex Guerrero and Scott Van Slyke could see time in left field if Crawford is out for a while.
Apr 28 - 12:19 AM

Blue Jays placed SS Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a cracked rib.

Reyes attempted to play through a small fracture in his left rib cage, but the pain has evidently become too much. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined. The Jays have called up Jonathan Diaz and figure to go with Ryan Goins as their primary shortstop while Reyes is on the shelf.
Apr 27 - 11:52 PM

Taijuan Walker was dominant against the Rangers in a win on Monday, allowing just an unearned run in seven innings.

The unearned run scored in the fourth inning, when Brad Miller made a poor throw after fielding an Elvis Andrus grounder, which would have otherwise been an inning-ending out. Walker gave up six hits, walked one, and struck out five. The right-hander had racked up three mediocre starts to begin the season. Monday's outing lowers his ERA to 6.86. He's also carrying an abysmal 2.29 WHIP and a 19/11 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings. Walker will look for continued success when he faces the Astros in Houston next.
Apr 27 - 11:50 PM

Yoenis Cespedes doubled and hit a three-run home run in four at-bats as the Tigers edged the Twins on Monday.

Cespedes pushed the Tigers' lead to 4-0 in the first inning with a three-run blast to left-center off of Tommy Milone. The Cuban slugger had been in a bit of a rut, going 2-for-13 over his previous four games. Cespedes now has four home runs and 16 RBI along with a .303/.325/.566 triple-slash line on the season.
Apr 27 - 11:33 PM

Cole Hamels finally won his first game, yielding just one run over seven innings on Monday versus the Cardinals.

Though the Phillies only provided him a total of six runs of support over his first four starts, Hamels hadn't pitched particularly well either. It was a different story on Monday night. The Phillies scored three times behind Hamels (four total) while the lefty limited the Cardinals to four hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Hamels' control is a bit concerning as he has 16 walks in 31 innings now. Nevertheless, he heads into a weekend start against the Marlins with a 3.19 ERA.
Apr 27 - 11:05 PM

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said after Monday's game that Gregory Polanco (groin) is considered day-to-day.

Hurdle revealed that Polanco suffered the injury over the weekend in Arizona while running the bases. It appears to be a minor issue, but expect the Pirates to be careful here and give Polanco at least another day or two of rest. Andrew Lambo went hitless in four at-bats Monday as Polanco's replacement in right field.
Apr 27 - 11:01 PM

Jason Marquis picked up his second win of the season after holding the Brewers to two runs over eight innings on Monday.

Marquis entered the game with a 7.20 ERA over his first three starts, so he sorely needed an outing like Monday's. The lowly Brewers could only squeak out two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three times. Marquis, with a more reasonable 5.48 ERA, also sports a 1.52 WHIP and a 24/7 K/BB ratio in 23 innings. He'll match up with the Braves at Turner Field in his next start.
Apr 27 - 10:50 PM

Jason Hammel earned the win on Monday after blanking the Cubs over eight innings.

Despite solid peripherals, Hammel carried a 5.19 ERA over three starts entering the night. He dominated the Pirates, holding them to just four hits (all singles) without issuing a walk and striking out seven. He lowered his ERA to 3.55 and boasts a 1.03 WHIP with a 23/1 K/BB ratio in 25 1/3 innings. Hammel will search for his third win of the season at home against the Brewers in his next start.
Apr 27 - 10:38 PM

Kelly Johnson went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run to help lead the Braves past the Nationals on Monday.

The utilityman got the start at left field in this one. He extended the Braves' lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run off of Doug Fister in the sixth inning, then added an RBI single in the seventh. The 33-year-old veteran has come to the plate 42 times and has homered twice with seven RBI while batting .263/.333/.526.
