Mat Latos underwent surgery on October 11 to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

Latos reported feeling elbow soreness during the final week of the regular season, which led to the Reds going with Johnny Cueto for the Wild Card game. The 25-year-old has already begun physical therapy and is expected to make a full recovery in time for spring training.

Pablo Sandoval (knee) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup on Monday afternoon against the Twins.

It'll be his first start since last Tuesday. Sandoval was limited to pinch-hitting duties for six days after taking a pitch off his left knee. He'll bat fifth and play third base in his return to action Monday.

Major League Baseball suspended Brian Matusz eight games for having a foreign substance on his arm.

Matusz was caught using a sticky grip-enhancer Saturday night during an appearance against the Marlins, and an eight-game suspension is the going rate for such a crime. The left-hander has appealed and will be available out of the Orioles' bullpen until that appeal is heard.
May 25 - 11:10 AM

Carlos Beltran is out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Monday due to illness.

Beltran also sat out Sunday's series finale against the Rangers. Garrett Jones is starting in right field for the Yankees in Monday's series opener versus the Royals.
May 25 - 11:07 AM

Brian McCann (foot) is in the Yankees' starting lineup on Monday afternoon against the Royals.

McCann made an early exit from Sunday's game with a foot cramp. It obviously wasn't a serious issue.
May 25 - 11:04 AM

Chris Davis is not in the Orioles' lineup Monday.

He'll take a day of rest against Astros ace Dallas Keuchel. Davis has a whopping 62 strikeouts in 40 games this season, though that's come with eight homers and 22 RBI.
May 25 - 10:22 AM

Lucas Duda (hamstring) is back in the Mets' starting lineup on Monday against the Phillies.

Duda tweaked his right hamstring while running to second base Saturday. It obviously wasn't a serious issue. The 29-year-old first baseman is batting .293/.385/.478 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 44 games this season. Juan Lagares (shoulder) is also back Monday.
May 25 - 10:21 AM

Troy Tulowitzki is not in the Rockies' starting lineup Monday against the Reds.

Daniel Descalso will fill in at shortstop for the Rockies in the afternoon opener at Great American Ball Park. It's just a day of rest for Tulo, who's batting .235/.254/.294 through 71 plate appearances in May.
May 25 - 10:16 AM

Jason Vargas (elbow) will start for the Royals on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Vargas missed around three weeks with a flexor strain in his left elbow. He'll be rushed back without making a rehab start because the Royals need him to cover Danny Duffy's spot. Duffy landed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with inflammation in his left shoulder.
May 25 - 10:11 AM

Royals placed LHP Danny Duffy on the 15-day disabled list with left biceps tendinitis.

Duffy reported feeling discomfort around his left shoulder last week and he's been rocked in his last few starts, so the Royals will give him some extended rest. Jason Vargas will be activated to start in his place Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium and Brandon Finnegan will join the Royals from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

Mets manager Terry Collins suggested Sunday that Matt Harvey may be going through a period of "dead arm."

Harvey had the worst outing of his career Saturday in the Mets' loss to the Pirates, yielding seven earned runs in four innings. But he was dominant against the Cardinals in his start before and the "dead arm" thing is really just speculation from Collins anyway. "I have not talked to Matt yet, but it looks like he might be going through some of that dead arm stuff that sometimes happens," said the Mets' skipper. "He’s going to pitch Friday with five days rest, be ready to go."
May 25 - 9:02 AM

Yovani Gallardo fired six innings of two-run ball in Sunday's victory over the Yankees, allowing just four hits and a walk along the way.

Gallardo punched out six on the night. All of the damage against him came in the first inning on a two-out, two-run single by Brian McCann. He was able to settle in nicely afterwards though, keeping his team in the game and allowing the Rangers offense to come from behind. Now 4-6 on the season, he'll head into Friday's start against the Red Sox with a 4.13 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 40/16 K/BB ratio through 56 2/3 innings on the year.
