Sonny Gray underwent successful surgery Friday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.

Gray also had a screw inserted into the finger to stabilize a fracture. The procedure was on his non-throwing hand, and the right-hander is expected to be ready to roll for the beginning of spring training. Gray suffered the injury during the ALDS Game 5 loss.

Red Sox signed SS Hanley Ramirez to a four-year, $88 million contract.

The deal includes a $22 million vesting option for a fifth year. With the Red Sox, Ramirez will most likely man left field, a spot at which he hasn't logged a single inning in his pro career. Defense is not why they signed him, though, and HanRam and fellow new addition Pablo Sandoval should give punch to the middle of the Red Sox order for years to come.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports the Rays are willing to listen to trade offers for Yunel Escobar.

The Rays, Rosenthal notes, are willing to listen on just about anyone. In Escobar, a team would be acquiring a good defensive shortstop -- if 2014 was the statistical outlier -- with a team-friendly deal through 2017, potentially. If Escobar were to be dealt, the Rays have other internal shortstop options in Ben Zobrist and possibly Nick Franklin who could fill in in the short term.

Yu Darvish (elbow) has been cleared for throwing.

Darvish underwent a checkup MRI on his right elbow Tuesday in Arlington, Texas and it showed no remaining inflammation. He'll spend the next several weeks working out in the Dallas area and should be 100 percent for the beginning of the 2015 season. Darvish was limited to 144 1/3 innings in 2014 after throwing 209 2/3 innings in 2013.

David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports that the Cubs have offered free agent left-hander Jon Lester a six-year deal worth "north of" $135 million.

This is the biggest reported offer to Lester thus far, topping the six-year, $110-120 million offer he reportedly received from the Red Sox. This is shaping up to be more than a two-team race, as the Braves, Giants, and Cardinals are also involved. In fact, Kaplan pegs the Giants as a serious threat. Perhaps something close to a $25 million AAV isn't so far-fetched after all.

According to the Japan Times, Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to return to Japan to pitch for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.

The deal isn't official yet, but it appears to be a forgone conclusion. "Pitchers who can start are a valuable commodity, so we will do our best to get him," said team president Yoshimitsu Goto. "We hope to get this done in the coming days." Matsuzaka, now 34, last pitched in Japan in 2006 before leaving to sign with the Red Sox.

White Sox signed 1B Adam LaRoche to a two-year, $25 million contract.

The agreement was reported last Friday and it's now official. LaRoche will make $12 million next season and $13 million in 2016. With Jose Abreu already in-house, the 35-year-old figures to serve as the regular DH for Chicago. LaRoche amassed 26 home runs and 92 RBI in 140 games with the Nationals this season and should continue to post strong power numbers in the hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that that the Marlins have called the Tigers to inquire about the availability of David Price and Rick Porcello.

Talks are not believed to be serious, so it might have simply been a matter of due diligence. Still, it makes sense that the Marlins would at least call. Price and Porcello can both become free agents after 2015, so Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski could be willing to be creative.

Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports that the Indians are among the teams who have shown interest in free agent third baseman Chase Headley.

While the Indians are interested, Castrovince writes that it's unclear whether they have made an offer. The Yankees plan to make a strong push to bring Headley back, but the Giants appear likely to pursue him now that Pablo Sandoval has left for the Red Sox.

Red Sox signed 3B Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million contract with a club option for 2020.

According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, Sandoval receives a $3 million bonus and will make $17 million per season from 2015-2017 and $18 million per season from 2018-2019. The club option is worth $17 million and includes a $5 million buyout. Coming off a year where he batted .279/.324/.415 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI over 157 games, the 28-year-old is an immediate upgrade at third base for Boston. And he could see an uptick in production with a move to a more hitter-friendly environment. Questions about his conditioning will linger as he moves into his 30s, but he should age better in the American League, where he could potentially be the long-term replacement for David Ortiz at DH.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Mets have shown interest in free agent reliever Craig Breslow.

The Mets are targeting a left-handed reliever this offseason, but aren't willing to pay the high price for Andrew Miller, so Breslow is a logical fit. The 34-year-old had a disappointing 5.96 ERA and 37/28 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings with the Red Sox this season, but he has bounceback potential.

Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com reports that Jon Lester plans to visit with the Cardinals next week.

Gammons adds that Lester "perhaps" could then make a decision at the end of that week ahead of the Winter Meetings. Most have viewed the Cubs and Red Sox as the favorites to sign the left-hander, but the Cards, Braves, Giants, Blue Jays and Royals have also expressed interest. Part of the appeal with Lester is that it won't cost a team a draft pick to sign him.
