Matt Kemp underwent surgery Monday on his left ankle to have torn cartilage, bone spurs and loose bodies removed, as well as a microfracture of his talus bone repaired.

The operation comes less than two weeks after he had surgery to repair the AC joint of his left shoulder. Kemp will use a scooter for a month and will be in a walking boot for another month after that. A clear timetable won't be known until he starts running, but the anticipation is that he'll be fine for the start of next season. The outfielder was limited to just 73 games this season due to injury.

Rockies manager Bud Black wants Charlie Blackmon to run more this season.

Blackmon fell back to 17 stolen bases in 2016 after swiping 43 in 2015, with Black indicating that the drop was due in part to the outfielder's legs not feeling 100 percent. "Charlie is dangerous in (the batter’s) box and became a real threat, each and every time he got in the box or when he got on first base (in 2015)," Black said. "We’ve got to get back to that. We’ve talked about that a little bit. Charlie was a little bit banged up last year. He was able to play, but I don’t think his legs felt great." Blackmon dealt with separate toe issues on two occasions in 2016, so perhaps that's what Black is referring to. Regardless, it's encouraging from a fantasy perspective to hear that Blackmon might be in line to bounce back from a steals standpoint in 2017.

Manager Terry Francona confirmed Cody Allen will close for the Indians in 2017.

"Cody is our closer," said Francona on Saturday, ending the debate once and for all. Just as he did last season, Allen will work the ninth inning with stud left-hander Andrew Miller serving as a jack-of-all trades. Allen and Miller were lights out in the playoffs last fall, combining for a 0.82 ERA over 33 innings of work. There's no reason to believe Cleveland's late-inning duo will be any less dominant in 2017.

Dellin Betances wasn't happy with comments made by Yankees president Randy Levine after losing his arbitration hearing.

Levine criticized Betances' agent, Jim Murray, during a press conference on Saturday. "If Dellin is upset about going to a hearing, now we know the result, he should go talk to his representatives and say, 'Why did you bring me here? What was the point?' I should have made a deal." Murray responded by calling the press conference "bizarre" while Betances called Levine's comments "unfair." With Betances disgruntled, it will be interesting to see if the Yankees entertain trade offers for the All-Star reliever. The 28-year-old is under contract through 2019.

Josh Donaldson's MRI revealed a right calf strain.

He suffered the injury while running on Friday. The Blue Jays say Donaldson will be treated daily and are optimistic he'll be ready for Opening Day. Donaldson has been remarkably durable throughout his career, missing just 19 games over his last four seasons. Unless we hear of a setback, Donaldson remains a borderline first-round pick in redraft formats.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Padres have agreed to a one-year deal with Jered Weaver.

The veteran right-hander will earn a base salary of around $3 million dollars, which will seemingly guarantee him a spot in the Padres' starting rotation. If there's any place that the 34-year-old soft-tossing right-hander can resurrect his career, pitching in the friendly confines of Petco Park and in the National League West is likely his best chance.

Dellin Betances was defeated in his arbitration hearing against the Yankees and will earn $3 million in 2017.

The hard-throwing right-hander had filed at $5 million and the two sides were unable to bridge the gap before the hearing. One of the most dominant relievers in all of baseball, the 28-year-old will work in a setup capacity in front of closer Aroldis Chapman in 2017.

Nick Swisher has announced his retirement from baseball and will join FOX Sports as a studio analyst for the 2017 season.

Swisher penned a piece for The Players' Tribune in which he officially announced that he was hanging up his cleats. It doesn't come as a surprise, as he's now 36 and played just 55 games in the minors last season. A 12-year major league veteran, Swisher finishes his career with a .249/.351/.447 batting line, 245 home runs and one All-Star team.

Reds signed OF Ryan Raburn to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

SB Nation's Chris Cotillo was first to report that the two sides may be a fit. Raburn batted a disappointing .220/.309/.404 for the Rockies last season and will turn 36 in April. However, he's a career .261/.341/.487 hitter against left-handed pitching, so he could be an option to platoon with Scott Schebler in right field.

Adrian Gonzalez won't swing a bat for two weeks due to a bout with tennis elbow.

It shouldn't be a long-term concern for the veteran first baseman, but Gonzalez's ability to play for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic is now in doubt. The Dodgers should have more on Gonzalez's status early next month. He batted .285/.349/.435 with 18 homers and 90 RBI for Los Angeles last season.

Tyler Austin will be in a boot for three weeks and shut down from baseball activity for six week after being diagnosed with a small fracture in his foot.

Austin suffered the break when he fouled a ball off the foot while taking batting practice. The 25-year-old might have been squeezed off the roster following the Chris Carter signing and now he'll begin the season on the disabled list. Austin batted .241/.300/.458 in 31 games for the Yankees last season.

David Wright (neck) is tentatively scheduled to play catch on Sunday.

It would be his first time throwing a baseball since last June. The Mets are bringing Wright along slowly this spring as he works his way back from a cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. His health status figures to be a daily topic of conversation throughout spring training.
