Reds hired Bryan Price as manager.

Price will receive a three-year deal. Widely regarded as one of the best pitching coaches in the game, this will be his first managerial gig. He has been the pitching coach with the Reds since 2010 and previously held the same role with the Mariners and Diamondbacks. Replacing the recently-fired Dusty Baker, he should be in good position to succeed immediately.

Yoenis Cespedes left Thursday's game against the Phillies with a left hamstring cramp.

Cespedes pulled up lame running from first to second on a Jay Bruce groundout in the fifth inning. He hobbled off the field and went straight to the clubhouse. Cespedes didn't come out for the sixth inning with Juan Lagares entering the game at center field and Michael Conforto moving from center to left. Cespedes went 1-for-2 with a single and walk before exiting. Consider him day-to-day.

Daniel Murphy was scratched from Thursday's game against the Braves because of tightness in his right leg.

Grant Green, who was already in the lineup at shortstop, will move to second base with Wilmer Difo filling in at shortstop. Manager Dusty Baker said he could tell Murphy didn't look right swinging the bat on Wednesday night. The Nats are hoping to have Murphy back for Friday's series opener against the Mets.

Xander Bogaerts went for tests on his left thumb after Thursday's game against the Blue Jays.

Bogaerts clubbed a go-ahead single in the ninth inning but jammed his thumb sliding into second base (he was called out after the Tigers challenged the play). He stayed in the game but was clearly at less than 100 percent. He'll be re-evaluted Friday before the Red Sox begin their three-game set at Baltimore. Brock Holt and Marco Hernandez are candidates to fill in at shortstop.

Jose Iglesias (concussion) is expected to be placed on the 7-day disabled list.

According to beat writer Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press, relievers Blaine Hardy and Joe Jimenez are set to join the team Friday in Minnesota. Iglesias is still dealing with headaches after taking a knee to the head Wednesday against Tampa Bay. Dixon Machado drew the start at shortstop in Thursday's series finale.

Mets activated RHP Jeurys Familia from the restricted list.

He's finished serving a 15-game suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy. David Wright was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Familia on the 40-man roster. The right-hander worked two perfect innings during a brief minor league rehab assignment. The Mets have said they'll ease Familia in, but it won't be long until he's back pitching the ninth inning. When that happens, interim closer Addison Reed will transition into a setup role.

Chris Sale struck out 13 over eight scoreless innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Blue Jays.

He got Jose Bautista four times. Sale has 42 strikeouts and just six walks over 29 2/3 innings to date. He exited with a 1-0 lead after Red Sox scored in the top of the ninth today, but Craig Kimbrel promptly blew the save, leaving Sale with just his one win to date. The Red Sox went on to prevail 4-1 in 10 innings.
Apr 20 - 4:00 PM

Cardinals placed 3B Jhonny Peralta on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to April 16, with an upper respiratory illness.

Peralta was off to a 3-for-25 (.120) start with nine strikeouts and zero extra-base hits. Maybe the time off will act as a kind of reset for him. Greg Garcia and Jedd Gyorko figure to share starts at third base for St. Louis. There's also talk of Matt Carpenter sliding back over from first base.
Apr 20 - 3:30 PM

Braves activated OF Matt Kemp from the 10-day disabled list.

Kemp is back in the Braves' starting lineup on Thursday, playing left field and batting cleanup, after missing 10 games with a right hamstring strain. He was off to an 8-for-16 start with two home runs.
Apr 20 - 3:19 PM

Seth Smith (hamstring) remains out of the Orioles' lineup Thursday versus the Reds.

Hyun Soo Kim will take a turn at leadoff and play left field, with Mark Trumbo in right and the hot-hitting Trey Mancini on the bench. Smith suffered a right hamstring strain Tuesday against the Reds and could eventually wind up on the 10-day disabled list. He's day-to-day for now.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Major League Baseball has cleared Cuban outfielder Luis Robert to sign with a team.

He'll officially become a free agent on May 20, per MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, giving Robert and his reps some time to shop around. The early clearance is great news for Robert's market, as baseball's new collective bargaining agreement calls for hard caps on international spending for the 2017-2018 signing period -- and the 2016-2017 signing period ends June 15. The ultra-talented 19-year-old is scheduled to hold private workouts over the next couple of weeks with the White Sox, Padres, Cardinals, Athletics, and Reds. And he already worked out for the Astros. He's not eligible to sign with the Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, or Royals because those teams are in the penalty and can't sign any international amateur player for more than $300,000. Robert should command millions in bonus money.
Apr 20 - 12:04 PM

Justin Upton (forearm) is out of the Tigers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon.

Upton tested his bruised right forearm during pregame batting practice and apparently didn't fell well enough to give it a go. He's been sidelined since a collision with the Rays' Tim Beckham on Tuesday. Andrew Romine is in left field and Nick Castellanos is batting cleanup Thursday versus Rays right-hander Erasmo Ramirez.
