Daniel Nava is starting in left field and batting fifth for the Red Sox in Saturday's Game 3 of the World Series.

It's Nava's first start of the series after starting two games in the ALCS. The left fielder doubled in Game 1 after entering as a substitute. The complete Red Sox lineup is Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Nava, Xander Bogaerts, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Stephen Drew and starting pitcher Jake Peavy.

Kevin Youkilis has retired from baseball.

"Youkilis, after deep thought about family and health, is calling it a career," reads a tweet from the 35-year-old's representatives at Pro Star Management. Youkilis collected 1,053 hits, 150 home runs, and 618 RBI over the course of his 10 major league seasons. He spent 2014 playing for the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan.

Cardinals exercised RHP John Lackey's $500,000 club option for 2015.

The MLB-minimum option was added to Lackey's five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Red Sox after he underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in October 2011, and Lackey told the Cardinals this summer that he fully intends to honor it. Lackey turned 36 years old last week and wasn't exactly dominant after the trade that sent him from Boston to St. Louis, but it's obviously still a heck of a bargain.
Oct 30 - 2:36 PM

Reds exercised RHP Johnny Cueto's $10 million club option for 2015.

Of course they did. Cueto was among the best pitchers in the majors in 2014, posting a career-high 20 wins with a 2.25 ERA and 242 strikeouts across 243 2/3 innings. He should be a fantasy ace again next season and then hit it big on the free agent market heading into 2016.

Yankees activated 3B Alex Rodriguez from the restricted list.

A-Rod is back on the Yankees' active roster after serving a 162-game suspension (reduced from the initial 211 games) for his involvement in the Biogenesis PED scandal. Assuming relationships can be patched, Rodriguez will serve as the Yankees' primary designated hitter in 2015. He'll still play a little third base as well, and there's talk of him trying first base.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers have made an "opening offer" to free agent Colby Lewis.

Something should get done before the exclusive negotiating window closes on Monday. Lewis had a rough 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 170 1/3 innings this season and missed the entire 2013 campaign due to hip surgery, so it's not like he'll be commanding big bucks. The right-hander turned 35 years old in August.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Royals are expected to decline Billy Butler's $12 million club option for the 2015 season.

Butler had a disappointing .271/.323/.379 slash line with just nine home runs and 66 RBI in 151 games during the 2014 regular season and then batted .262/.327/.333 in the playoffs. The 28-year-old designated hitter has put up some tremendous numbers in the past and should do pretty well for himself on the open market, but the cost-conscious Royals obviously feel this downward trend is real.

Madison Bumgarner was named World Series MVP and set a postseason record for innings pitched along the way, tossing five scoreless innings in relief and earning the win in the Giants' Game 7 victory Wednesday.

The left-hander finished 3-0 in the World Series with the win. The previous record for innings pitched in a single postseason was 48 1/3 innings, so Bumgarner's 52 2/3 innings smashed that record with relative ease. That he gave up just six runs in the entire postseason, and just one in 21 World Series innings, was icing on the cake. Bumgarner won his first World Series MVP award on the heels of his first NLCS MVP award, and the ring was his third in five full seasons. The scariest part is that, at 25 years old, he may still be getting better as a pitcher.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs are hiring Joe Maddon as manager.

Maddon opted out of his contract with the Rays on October 24 and took less than a week to land a new gig. He's joining a Cubs team that is very much on the rise, and with much more financial freedom than what he was working with in Tampa Bay. Reports had Maddon seeking a five-year contract worth $25 million and the Cubs presumably met those demands. It's not clear what the immediate future holds for Rick Renteria, who was named Cubs manager last November on a three-year deal.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Wednesday evening that Madison Bumgarner could throw 50-60 pitches of relief in Game 7 of the World Series.

Bochy noted that it's Bumgarner's normal side session day and that the young left-hander typically throws around 50 pitches in those workouts. Tim Hudson will start Game 7 on Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium, but Bochy could opt for a quick hook at the first sign of trouble. Bumgarner dominated the Royals in Games 1 and 5.

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that the Braves "are expected to make" a qualifying offer to impending free agent Ervin Santana.

The qualifying offer this winter will be one year, $15.3 million. Santana turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer last winter from the Royals and then struggled to find a big contract on the open market, so he may accept this time around. The 31-year-old right-hander had an up and down 2014 for Atlanta, posting a 3.95 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 179/63 K/BB ratio in 196 total innings.
Oct 29 - 4:43 PM

Juan Perez will start in left field and bat eighth in Game 7 of the World Series against the Royals on Wednesday.

Travis Ishikawa is on the bench, as Giants manager Bruce Bochy is trying to put his best defense out there in the deciding game of the World Series. The full lineup: Gregor Blanco CF, Joe Panik 2B, Buster Posey C, Pablo Sandoval 3B, Hunter Pence RF, Brandon Belt 1B, Michael Morse DH, Brandon Crawford SS, Perez LF. Tim Hudson will start for San Francisco while Kansas City will counter with Jeremy Guthrie.
