Adam LaRoche told Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo he does not believe the bone chips in his elbow contributed to his disappointing 2013 season.

LaRoche underwent successful surgery in late October to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. The veteran first baseman slashed just .237/.332/.403 with 20 homers and 62 RBI in 590 plate appearances this past season. He'll require 4-6 weeks of rest before resuming workouts and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Anthony Rizzo's first-inning, two-run home run was the deciding factor in the Cubs' win over the Giants on Thursday -- a game resumed from Tuesday.

The Giants won a protest and Tuesday's match against the Cubs was resumed on Thursday with the Cubs leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The Giants scored once in the sixth, but Rizzo's home run two days ago stood the test of time and was the reason the Cubs won. Rizzo finished 2-for-4, his other hit being a double. The first baseman now has 29 home runs, 69 RBI, and a .279/.377/.515 slash line.

Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Red Sox and Tigers "appear to be the front-runners" for Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday listed those two teams in addition to the Giants as the most likely landing spots for Castillo, but it appears San Francisco may have dropped out of the bidding. Edes also adds that Castillo is expected to make a decision "no later than the weekend." Castillo reportedly could receive a deal in the five-year, $60 million range.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Hyun-Jin Ryu (glute) should be activated "within a day or two" of when he's first eligible on August 30.

Ryu threw a bullpen session on Thursday with no issues. He's not expected to need a rehab assignment, so the left-hander will throw a few more bullpen sessions and/or simulated games before being activated. Ryu holds a 3.28 ERA over 23 starts this season.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly reiterated Thursday that Hanley Ramirez (oblique) should be activated on Sunday, the first day he's eligible.

Ramirez took batting practice and went through other drills again Thursday and appears to have come out of it no worse for the wear. The shortstop was batting .277/.367/.455 with 12 homers and 12 steals over 100 games before going on the disabled list.

Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Thursday.

Benoit has been dealing with a shoulder issue for the last several days to the point that a stint on the disabled list was a possibility. However, it appears after the 'pen session Thursday that a DL move will be avoided. Benoit owners should scoop up Kevin Quackenbush just in case, though.

An MRI on Salvador Perez's right knee came back negative.

The Royals were never overly concerned that Perez had structural damage, and the exam has confirmed that the catcher will be fine. The All-Star catcher should be back in the lineup on Friday in Texas.

Angels acquired 2B Gordon Beckham from the White Sox for a player to be named later or cash.

If you're going to gamble, this is the type of player -- and acquisition cost -- to do it on. Beckham has been pretty awful this year -- slashing .221/.263/.336 -- but it's worth finding out if there's still offensive upside in that bat (he entered the year with a career .694 OPS, though Beckham has steadily regressed since logging an .808 OPS as a rookie in 2009). The Chicago Sun-Times' Daryl Van Schouwen wrote earlier this month that the White Sox would probably non-tender Beckham this offseason, so you can understand why they'd take whatever was offered to them. Beckham will back up Howie Kendrick and David Freese. Meanwhile, we expect Marcus Semien to be promoted for an extended look at second base by the White Sox.

Angels placed RHP Garrett Richards on the 60-day disabled list with a torn left patellar tendon.

Thursday's MRI results on Richards' knee revealed a torn patellar tendon. This was the worst case scenario, but it was also expected. Richards was shaken to the core after the gruesome injury -- suffered when he attempted to cover second base on Wednesday and his knee gave out -- and you can understand why: Richards was a darkhorse Cy Young candidate, entering Wednesday's start 13-4 with a 2.53 ERA, collecting 164 strikeouts in 167 innings. "Surgery is tentatively scheduled for next week," the Angels twitter feed passes along. "Richards is anticipated to miss 6 to 9 months."

Alex Cobb limited the Tigers to two hits over seven innings for the win as the Rays beat the Tigers 1-0 on Thursday despite getting one-hit.

The Rays are the fourth team this year to win a game in which they were one-hit. However, they did it despite never drawing a single walk. That makes them just the third team since 1914, according to Baseball-Reference data, to win a game in which they had one hit and no walks, joining the 1971 Orioles (on a Frank Robinson homer) and the 2006 White Sox (on a Jim Thome homer). The Rays got their run in the first after Eugenio Suarez's error allowed Desmond Jennings to reach and Brandon Guyer tripled. Cobb, Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee made it hold up, combining on a four-hitter. Cobb is now 9-6 with a 3.01 ERA this season.

Will Middlebrooks (hamstring) is out again Thursday.

The third baseman is still being bothered by tightness in his right hamstring. He's considered day-to-day.
Aug 21 - 3:50 PM

Mike Napoli is out of the Red Sox starting lineup again on Thursday due to back spasms.

The minor back injury also kept him out of action on Wednesday night. He is considered day-to-day.
