Stephen Drew will not accept Boston's qualifying offer.

It would have been a one-year, $14.1 million contract and the Scott Boras client has his sights set much higher. The team that signs Drew this winter will have to forfeit a top draft pick. Unless that team is the Red Sox.

Adam Jones is listed as day-to-day after X-rays on his wrist came back negative on Thursday.

Jones was removed from Thursday's game against the Royals after crashing into the outfield wall. While he is experiencing symptoms of whiplash, there were no fractures in his wrist and he isn't experiencing any concussion symptoms. He should return to the O's lineup at some point over the weekend.

Cubs acquired RHP Fernando Rodney from the Mariners for a player to be named later.

Rodney will join the bullpen on Friday. He'll help provide depth in the late innings for the Cubs with Jason Motte on the disabled list. The 38-year-old hurler posted a troublesome 5.68 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 50 2/3 innings with the Mariners.
Aug 27 - 8:07 PM

Yordano Ventura was magnificent in Thursday's win over the Orioles, striking out 11 over six shutout innings.

The hard-throwing right-hander walked four and allowed just two hits on the afternoon. While he has been highly inconsistent this season, he continues to show flashes of the top of the rotation hurler that the Royals expect him to become. He'll look to replicate this fine effort when he squares off against the Tigers on Wednesday.
Aug 27 - 7:48 PM

Madison Bumgarner delivered another dazzling performance in Thursday's victory over the Cubs, racking up 12 strikeouts over six innings of one-run ball.

The All-Star southpaw allowed just two hits and a pair of walks on the afternoon. He is in the midst of another brilliant season, compiling a 2.97 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 192/30 K/BB ratio over 175 2/3 innings. He'll head in search of his 17th victory when he does battle against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Giancarlo Stanton (hand) is expected to face live pitching in batting practice next Monday.

Progress has been slow for Stanton, who has been sidelined since late June with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. However, he finally appears to be headed in the right direction. The hope is that he could finally be back in the Marlins lineup by the end of next week.

Denard Span is out of Thursday's lineup for the Nationals due to back soreness.

It doesn't sound like a major concern, but the Nationals will have to manage him down the stretch. Michael Taylor is starting in center field against the Padres.
Aug 27 - 4:37 PM

Adam Jones left Thursday's game against the Royals with an apparent injury.

Jones ran into the center field fence trying to track down a ball off the bat of Ben Zobrist in the first inning. He remained in the game initially, but Paul Janish replaced him as a pinch-hitter in the third. The O's should pass along an update soon.
Aug 27 - 4:35 PM

Marlins manager Dan Jennings said Jose Fernandez (biceps) had a "wow" bullpen session Thursday.

Good news for Fernandez, who landed on the disabled list earlier this month with a right biceps strain. There's no sense of urgency to rush him back into action, but the hope is that he'll be ready to rejoin the Marlins' rotation by mid-September.
Aug 27 - 4:31 PM

Christian Yelich is out of Thursday's lineup against the Pirates with a bruised knee.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald notes that he's not even taking batting practice, so this situation is worth watching. Derek Dietrich will start in left field while Ichiro Suzuki will play right.
Aug 27 - 4:16 PM

Adrian Gonzalez (knee) said he's "100 percent" certain he'll be able to play Friday.

Gonzalez made an early exit from Thursday's series finale in Cincinnati after fouling a ball off his left knee, but he only suffered a small bruise. Los Angeles opens a big weekend series against the Cubs on Friday night.
Aug 27 - 4:00 PM

Matt Shoemaker was fantastic in his return to the Angels rotation on Wednesday, allowing just one hit over 7 1/3 innings in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

Shoemaker was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on August 16, but he rejoined the rotation on Thursday to pitch his best game of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked one, with only an Anthony Gose single registering for a hit over his 7 1/3 innings of work. Don't expect these kinds of starts on a regular basis, but Shoemaker can be used as a match-up play in select situations. He takes a 4.48 ERA and 1.24 WHIP into his next start, a road showdown with the A's.
