White Sox general manager Rick Hahn indicated Tuesday that Paul Konerko has been offered a contract to return in 2014.

If he does come back, it would be in a reduced role likely at a pretty modest salary, as the White Sox have Jose Abreu at first base and Adam Dunn at DH. Konerko could get a starting job elsewhere, but he'll need to weigh that versus playing for his preferred team. It's also possible that he could wind up retiring. "It’s a matter of everyone’s comfort level and him getting convinced that that’s what he wants to do," Hahn said. "... We had a real good open and honest conversation about where his mind is at and his hopes for going forward, and a good talk about the club and our hopes for moving forward. At this time, he’s still going through his process of deliberating about what he wants to do next year."

Cubs activated RHP Rafael Soriano from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.

The veteran reliever allowed eight hits and four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Cubs before landing on the disabled list August 4 with right shoulder inflammation. The 35-year-old right-hander will probably take the rest of the summer off and gear up for free agency. He's going to have to settle for another minor league deal this winter.
Sep 1 - 4:51 PM

Javier Baez is starting at second base and batting seventh Tuesday night against the Reds.

It'll be his first game at the major league level this season. Baez was a huge disappointment for the Cubs in 2014, but he has continued to post eye-popping numbers this year in the minors and it looks like he'll have a shot at regular playing time down the stretch if he gets off to a hot start. The 22-year-old should be owned in most mixed leagues.

Alex Rios has been diagnosed with chickenpox and could miss the next two weeks.

Rios came down with the virus over the weekend in Tampa Bay and flew back to Kansas City, where he got an official diagnosis. Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera has also been hit with chickenpox and Kansas City management will have to hope it doesn't spread further. This obviously comes with terrible timing at the tail end of the regular season, but the Royals do have a massive lead in the American League Central.
Sep 1 - 4:42 PM

Christian Yelich (knee, ankle) is back in the Marlins' starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

Yelich missed a bit of time with a bruised ankle and knee. He's batting second and starting in left field in his return Tuesday night versus Braves lefty Manny Banuelos.
Sep 1 - 4:29 PM

Steven Matz (lat) will join the Mets' rotation this weekend against the Marlins.

Matz is going to be filling in for Noah Syndergaard, who will skip a turn in the rotation as a way to protect his rookie workload. New York will presumably then shift to a six-starter mix. Matz has been on the disabled list since early July with a partial tear of his left lat muscle. He has a good fantasy matchup in Miami.
Sep 1 - 4:18 PM

Noah Syndergaard will be skipped on his next turn through the Mets' starting rotation.

Steven Matz is going to be activated from the disabled list to fill in Saturday against the Marlins. This is a nice luxury for the first-place Mets, who can give the 23-year-old Syndergaard a nice 10-day break leading into the stretch run and postseason. Syndergaard has a 3.31 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 129/29 K/BB ratio over his first 122 1/3 major league innings.
Sep 1 - 4:15 PM

Kevin Kiermaier (ankle) won't play Tuesday night.

Kiermaier sprained his right ankle on Monday night against the Orioles. He also made a fantastic catch to rob Manny Machado of a home run in that same game. The rangy center fielder should be fine in a few days. Brandon Guyer is in center Tuesday versus Baltimore.
Sep 1 - 4:02 PM

Hector Olivera is in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.

Olivera was originally on the bench, but he's now batting sixth and starting at third base. The 30-year-old is an intriguing player, but he hit just .231 with three doubles and a .593 OPS in 42 plate appearances during his time with Triple-A Gwinnett. Most fantasy owners can afford to wait and see with him.
Sep 1 - 3:28 PM

Royals activated OF Alex Gordon from the 15-day disabled list.

Gordon has been sidelined since July 8 with a Grade 2 groin strain, but he felt good during a minor league rehab assignment and will make his return to the Royals' lineup on Tuesday night. He's expected to get regular rest down the stretch, so fantasy owners should have a backup plan in mind.
Sep 1 - 3:24 PM

Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) is out of the starting lineup again Tuesday against the Yankees.

Ramirez has now missed five straight starts due to a sore right shoulder. The Red Sox don't need to place him on the disabled list at this point in this season, but it's unclear when he'll be ready to play again. It's a tricky spot for fantasy owners.
Sep 1 - 3:10 PM

Carlos Gonzalez is not in the starting lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks.

Brandon Barnes will start in right field. Look for CarGo to play in the nightcap.
