John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR reports that the Diamondbacks have hired former Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan as a pitching consultant/special assistant to the general manager.

The report has been confirmed by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The D'Backs wanted Duncan to become their pitching coach, but the 68-year-old decided that he wasn't ready to take on a full-time job again. Even in a relatively minor role, it's a nice addition for the D'Backs.

Justin Bour (finger) remained out of the Marlins' lineup Friday.

Bour is still recovering from a dislocated left pinkie finger, although he hopes to play this weekend. Chris Johnson is handling first base in his place.

Yankees placed LHP CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, with a left groin strain.

Sabathia is coming off his best start of the season, having tossed seven scoreless frames against the Orioles, but he apparently injured himself in the outing. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined. Ivan Nova will presumably replace Sabathia in the Yankees' rotation.

Domingo Santana (shoulder) remained out of the Brewers' lineup Friday.

He's been out of the lineup for four out of the last five games due to soreness in his right lat. Santana pinch-hit in Thursday's game, so he's presumably available off the bench Friday. Alex Presley is filling in again in right field.
May 6 - 2:25 PM

Athletics activated 3B Danny Valencia from the 15-day disabled list.

Valencia spent the minimum amount of time on the DL and homered in one of his two rehab games. He'll return to a .294/.345/.353 batting line with the A's and will resume his role as the starting third baseman.

Nationals activated OF Ben Revere from the 15-day disabled list.

Revere missed a little over a month of action with a strained right oblique. He's back in center field and leading off for the Nationals on Friday against the Cubs and John Lackey.
May 6 - 11:05 AM

Jason Heyward (wrist) is back in the Cubs' lineup Friday.

Heyward missed four starts with a sore right wrist, although he replaced Dexter Fowler during Thursday's game after Fowler was ejected. The 26-year-old is hitting just .207/.311/.250 so far this season. The Cubs also have Javier Baez at shortstop and Tommy La Stella at third base Friday, with Addison Russell and Jorge Soler on the bench and Kris Bryant in left field.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports that Garrett Richards has a torn right ulnar collateral ligament and is expected to need Tommy John surgery.

Multiple other outlets have confirmed the report. The Angels cited fatigue and dehydration when they scratched Richards from Friday's scheduled start versus the Rays, but Passan says they found the UCL tear while examining the righty on Thursday. It's absolutely brutal news for the club, as Richards is far and away their best starter. Assuming he goes under the knife, he would be sidelined until around midseason next year. Passan says that Andrew Heaney has UCL damage, too, but will try to rehab the injury for now. The Angels should have an update on their pitchers later Friday.

Nick Hundley (oblique) will be re-evaluated Friday before the Rockies determine whether he'll need a stint on the disabled list.

Hundley tweaked his left oblique during batting practice Thursday and had to be scratched from the lineup. "I've been feeling good physically, so it's frustrating on that end," Hundley said Thursday. "I'll have to check and see how it feels tomorrow. I cut batting practice a little bit short and I was going to go until it got worse." Dustin Garneau will be recalled if Hundley goes on the DL and he'd be in line to share time behind the plate with Tony Wolters.

Trevor Story continued his fantastic early-season roll in Thursday's 17-7 win over the Giants, homering and finishing with three RBI.

Story continued his (sorry) storybook opening to the 2016 season, swatting home run No. 11 off Giants starter Matt Cain to lead off the fifth inning. And what a fifth inning that was for the Rockies. The boys from Denver would score 13 runs in the frame, batting around and then some. Story chased his home run with an RBI single when he came up for the second time in that fifth. His numbers figure to return to earth as the season rolls along, but for the time being, the 23-year-old shortstop is making happy humans of all who happen to own him for fantasy purposes. With Thursday's nice night in the books, Story is slashing .270/.339/.658 with four doubles, three triples, 11 homers and 24 RBI over 111 at-bats.
May 6 - 2:01 AM

Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-5 with a home run as the Red Sox topped the White Sox 7-3 on Thursday.

It was the third time in his last eight games that Pedroia racked up three hits. The second baseman is sixth in the American League with 20 runs scored, and his .322 batting average is ninth-best in the league. He's hitting .322/.364/.496 with four homers and 14 RBI, but he's stopped running altogether after being a double-digit stolen base threat earlier in his career.

Matt Cain was obliterated in Thursday's 17-7 loss to the Rockies, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits over four-plus innings.

We will give you a moment to hide the children before we go over Cain's stats. The veteran right-hander surrendered two home runs and did not strike out a batter. He didn't walk one, either. With almost everything falling in the strike zone, the Rockies teed off. They pounced for three runs in the first inning -- highlighted by a two-run homer from wunderkind Nolan Arenado -- an additional run in the second, and then, the fifth inning happened. Cain would start the inning and promptly surrender the rest of his runs in the frame. Trevor Story walloped a home run to lead off the frame, which was followed by a Carlos Gonzalez double, a Brandon Crawford error and an RBI single by Gerardo Para. Cain would be lifted for Vin Mazzaro at that point. Cain has now allowed at least six runs in three of his six starts. He is scheduled to face the Blue Jays next time out. That should be interesting.
